  1. Concentarate solely on the OG's. Also do Gmatprep questions as many as possible. No other books, no other tests.
  2. v(2x) means "root of 2x". eg. v49=7
  3. This is an easy one.Answer is d.Please rationalise numerator and denominator.
  4. "as" and "like"-which one to use especially in 720+ questions on the GMAT. Let me cite a 720+ OG question: [Q122,pg 718,OG11] More than thirty years ago Dr. Barbara McClintock, the Nobel Prize winner, reported that genes can "jump," as pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another. (A) as pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another (B) like pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another © as pearls do that move mysteriously from one necklace to others (D) like pearls do that move mysteriously from one necklace to others (E) as do pearls that move mysteriously from one necklace to some other one OA is b. But why not a? because "as" is mostly used as a conjonction and introduces clauses. What follows "as" in the original sentence above is not a clause but a phrase. Ok! then please correct a without deleting "as". Let us construct a new option f which is also correct: f) as pearls moving mysteriously from one necklace to another do. Now we have a clause after "as". To understand f let us fragment it f) as pearls..........................do. Actually "moving mysteriously from one necklace to another" is a modifier-an essential modifier.
  5. Parallelism is also maintained between clauses in "coordinating conjunctions" (eg of coordinating conjunctions are either/or,neither/nor,not only/but also etc). Let us take egs: a) Neither Lulu plans ahead nor Lola. b) Neither Lulu plans ahead nor Lola does. Though in general context-talking beyond GMAT-option a is correct-but on the GMAT it is not. On the GMAT b is correct as it compares 2 clauses-"Lulu plans", "Lola does", but a is wrong as it compares "Lulu plans" (a clause) with Lola (a noun). Actually option a is elliptical with "does" understood after "Lola". You should avoid options which do not state "undestood verbs"-on the GMAT. Let me quote Strunk and White(4th ed.,article 10, pg11):"In general avoid understood verbs by supplying them" Any egs from OG? Yes umpteen. Try to find one if u r not successful tell me I will post one.
  6. simple27 I have also written the same. Please read the post carefully. Tatum I am pleasantly surprised 2 see u. Have u not taken the GMAT yet? There have been a lot of queries to post (more)examples for whatever I have been claiming in the last posts. Give me 1 more eg. where "the" has not been used throughout . Please refer D36,OG11. Give me one eg. where a verb is made parallel to an adverb+verb as claimed by u. "But remember that while observing parallelism we map noun to noun, verb to verb and if an adjective or an adverb comes in our way we are not much bothered about it." Refer question 46,pg274,OGV The psychologist William James believed that facial expressions not only provide a visible sign of an emotion, actually contributing to the feeling itself. (A) emotion, actually contributing to the feeling itself (B) emotion but also actually contributing to the feeling itself © emotion but also actually contribute to the feeling itself (D) emotion; they also actually contribute to the feeling of it (E) emotion; the feeling itself is also actually contributed to by them OA is C. Note that "provide" is a verb and "actually contribute" is a adverb+verb combo. Give an eg. of superficial parallelism from OG. Q163,pg677,og10 Found throughout Central and South America, sloths hang from trees by long rubbery limbs and sleep fifteen hours a day, moving infrequently enough that two species of algae grow on its coat and between its toes. (A) sloths hang from trees by long rubbery limbs and sleep fifteen hours a day, moving infrequently enough (B) sloths hang from trees by long rubbery limbs, they sleep fifteen hours a day, and with such infrequent movements © sloths use their long rubbery limbs to hang from trees, sleep fifteen hours a day, and move so infrequently (D) the sloth hangs from trees by its long rubbery limbs, sleeping fifteen hours a day and moving so infrequently (E) the sloth hangs from trees by its long rubbery limbs, sleeps fifteen hours a day, and it movesinfrequently enough OA is d. The best choice correctly subordinates "sleeping" and "moving" to "hangs". No I have not mugged up all the 3 OG's sir-just a lot of hard work.
  7. I am flooded with private messages. I do not know how to reply to so many messages. Sorry if I am not able to reply to a particular message. Shooter I have replied to both your messages.Good luck for your exam. Actually I am waiting for the final results of ISB-will be out by 20th of this month. Took my interview with ISB on 15/10/2008 in Delhi. There have been so many queries regarding SC and I have tried to reply to most of them. Further notes on parallelism will be posted soon. As I am very busy with my applications to various colleges.
  8. DIEHARD800 who told u that 2 past events are necessary to use past perfect-oops I suppose manhattan SC guide-though I will say that it is an excellent source to augment your skills of SC but not a complete source. I took my GMAT in september and was able to score a 740 because I went way ahead of Manhattan SC. Infact the books I consulted were of such high calibre, rare, and voluminous that if I mention them here many who are planning to take their GMAT in a month or 2 may get demoralised. Read my debrief: http://www.www.urch.com/forums/just-finished-my-gmat/99968-gmat-740-a.html Now coming to your question There are 2 points to be kept in mind while using past perfect. 1) It is used when we talk of 2 events in the past-which happened at different point of time. 2) It is also used when we talk of something in past which has already ended. Please refer explanations to the following questions: Q62,pg 689,OG11-read explanation to option a and that given above it. Q36,pg705,OG 10-read explanation. There is one GMATprep question which focuses on this issue in a much sharper manner-but I will not post it. As it will only be delivered to students who will suscribe with me-I am planning to start a premeir website/coaching in 2009 only for SC.
  9. As I told earlier in my post that we should either use words such as to,a,an,the, his, her or their with all the items in a series or only with the first item. But is there exception to this rule. Yes there is!!!! Let us consider this 700+ GMAT question from OG11-Q117. Q117) New theories propose that catastrophic impacts of asteroids and comets may have caused reversals in the Earth's magnetic field, the onset of ice ages, splitting apart continents 80 million years ago, and great volcanic eruptions. (A) splitting apart continents (B) the splitting apart of continents © split apart continents (D) continents split apart (E) continents that were split apart OA is b. Note that we do not use "the" throughout. reversals, the onset, and volcanic erruption are nouns. But "splitting" is not a noun-it is a present participle. If we add "the" before "splitting", in this case, it transforms in to a gerund-which is a noun form. Thus use of "the" before "splitting" is a must. Some students may also be carried away by the adjective "great" before the compound noun "volcanic erruption" and say that parallelism is faulty as there is no use of such adjective before the other nouns in this question. But remember that while observing parallelism we map noun to noun, verb to verb and if an adjective or an adverb comes in our way we are not much bothered about it. In my next lecture I will talk of superficial parallelism. Amazing that in the manhatten SC guide though superficial parallelism is discussed as a topic but nowhere in the guide a single eg. is given from the OG where superficial parallelism is used. I will site an eg. from OG where superficial parallelism is used.
  10. I scored a 740 on the GMAT-some of u may even be remembering me. Read my debrief below: http://www.www.urch.com/forums/just-finished-my-gmat/99968-gmat-740-a.html I have returned to give back what this excellent sight has given me.I have some extra time and I intend to splurge it on u fellow GMAT takers. I will be solely concentrating on SC questions to help u. I will be writing notes on topics-parallelism/comparison/modifiers etc. for you. Throwing superb/excellent questions at u. Guiding u regarding the material. Methodologically training u in your preperation for the GMAT. And let me start right away: PARALLELISM When you use words such as to,a,an,his, her or their with items in a series-you can use the word with the first item, thus having it apply to all the items,or you can repeat it with each item. Eg (CORRECT) Ritu liked to have a beer, to exchange stories with her pals, and to watch the men walk by. (INCORRECT) Ritu liked to have a beer, exchange stories with her pals, and to watch the men walk by. (CORRECT) In spring, summer,or winter he will always be ready to help. (CORRECT) In spring,in summer or in winter he will always be ready to help. (INCORRECT)In spring,in summer or winter he will always be ready to help.
  11. TA TUM I have always seen a great competitor in u. You have asked an excellent question. 1) There was no question on probability or stats. There were plenty and plenty of questions on number theory. 2) Toughness was much more in actual GMAT than GMAT FOCUS or GMATPREP. 3) One live question in quant came from one of the sets. I will soon post my phone no. so that people can contact me directly for their queries.
  12. My AWA is 4 (21 percentile)-a dismissal performance. Do's and dont's: 1)Throw away Kaplan-all versions-Kaplan 800/primere/verbal. 2)Throw away princton-though for verbal it may be consulted if you have plenty of time. 3) Throw away manhattan tests-Gmatprep is the best. 4) Manhattan SC is the best for SC-drink eat,eat it,sleep with it!!! 5)Throw away LSAT CR's-though they may increase your analytical skill-they are not focused. 6)Please do verbal from all the 3 OG's-OG10,OG11,OGv.
  13. Took my Gmat on 7th september and scored a 740 (97 percentile)-math 50 (94 percentile) and verbal 40 (89 percentile). I have decided not to write a debrief as I do not think I have anything new to add. But if any of you have any specific query do let me know.
  14. Soaring television costs accounted for more than half the spending in the presidential campaign of 1992, a greater proportion than it was in any previous election. A. a greater proportion than it was B. a greater proportion than C. a greater proportion than they have been D. which is greater than was so E. which is greater than it has been PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY NOT C?
