CEMFI places one student or two in a Top 10 a year (out of a class of 20). Some years they have placed none. In both places you need to stay for 2 years.

They are really good in micro theory. The reason why they are not higher in the rankings is because current rankings were made in 2005 (or before).

I think last year was a special case. Looking at this year's job market candidates it seems there are around 20. The department has also been hiring actively in the past recent years, and the quality of the placements has been extremely good. So I guess the increase in the number of students can be related with the increase in faculty.

Carlosmg, where else did you applied? Do you have any other admits? It seems Columbia was tough this year.

If you are taking macro with Gilchrist get a letter from him and you'll be in in a top 15 program (if the letter is good obviously...)

Do you guys think NYU has established itself as a top 10 dept? And if so, which dept is not top 10 anymore? UPenn?

I compare the placements of BU, Penn and Berkeley and I find them pretty similar, specially in recent years. And I am sure Clumbia's will be similar. I cannot find WUSTL's ones but I'm sure they will be comparable to these ones in a few years. However, I think it still pays to go more well-known universities. And I would like to add that we talk about top 5-10 or top 25 with rankings that are almost 5 years old.. .

BU has a solid macro-money group. Apart from from King and Gilchrist they also have some new promising new guys. I think they fund approximately half of the incoming class and everyone after the first year if they are in good standing(grades, qualifiers...).

Does anyone know a good source of exercises for micro (apart from mas-colell) and macro to practice for first year comprehensive exams? With solutions if possible. Any books, websites... Thanks

If you go to the LSE Master's you will probably will get an even better admission next year if you do a decent work there, but you will be 'wasting' one year. So it depends what do you prefer. If you really want to go to a top-5 go to LSE (and you'll have your shot). If you want to end the not so much fun life of an economics PhD student sooner go to BU.
