  2. Location has traditionally been one of the most important determinants of a business’s success. The importance of location is not likely to change, no matter how advanced the development of computer communications and others kinds of technology becomes.” Discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the opinion stated above. Support your views with reasons and/or examples from your own experience, observations, or reading. The issue whether location is one of the most important determinants of business success is interesting to evaluate. This issue has become one of the most fundamental question to evaluate in today's Hi-tech era. The issue that location is one of the most important determinants of business entirely depends on the product/service which you are selling. many thinker will go with the view that the in today's era location is not the fundamental thing to success in business, but my opinion on this issue is that location is still fundamental requirement of business success. the reasons for my thinking are as follows. The main reason for my view is that before starting any business (not e-business), the first thing the entrepreneur will do is the selection of the sight & locality. It is locality that can help the company to nourish. Let's take a classical example of a multiplex. Consider that there is the only one multiplex theatre in town, & it is some 10 mile away from the city. The owner of multiplex thinks that since there is only one multiplex in that city people will ready to travel little long to see the movie in multiplex & also the outside the town the prices of land properly are comparatively less, so he has selected the location out of the town. People will visit that multiplex because they don't have another choice. Now after 3 months of opening of that multiplex, a smaller multiplex get opens in the centre of town so now people don’t have reason to travel that long. As a result the old multiplex which was out of the town is now out of the business. The second reason for my argument is that if one entrepreneur wants to start a new venture & he selects the location where so many big ventures in same field are there, the chances of success in that venture is very less unless the customers are not fully satisfied with services they are getting. For example, if anybody wants to start the food business it is better to start it near the high-schools, hostel, office area or near college & universities where one can expect large no. of people to kick-start the canteen or restaurant. It's not logical to start it in residential area. Some scholars may argue that now a days so many things can be purchase online for example e-bay,amazon.com etc. however even these people will not get ready to pay for home just by looking at the picture of the home online because the no of cyber crime is increasing day by day. Not each & every thing we purchase online. The products like car or automobile or home are better be evaluated by there physical experience not by just a view on internet. for this reason some company like dell prefer to come to their show room to see the product select that you prefer & then pay for the product. In nutshell, I conclude that success of the business may depends on several factors but the location is the most important determinants of the success of any business. :grad:
  3. The following appeared in a speech delivered by a member of the city council: “Twenty years ago, only half of the students who graduated from Einstein High School went on to attend a college or university. Today, two–thirds of the students who graduate from Einstein do so. Clearly, Einstein has improved its educational effectiveness over the past two decades. This improvement has occurred despite the fact that the school’s funding, when adjusted for inflation, is about the same as it was 20 years ago. Therefore, we do not need to make any substantial increase in the school’s funding at this time.” Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc. The author concludes that we do not need to make any substantial increase in the Einstein school’s funding at this time. the author's line of reasoning for that is since improvement in Einstein High school has occurred despite the fact that theschool’s funding, when adjusted for inflation, is about the same as it was 20 years ago. This argument is unconvincing due to several reasons. First of all author's conclusion Einstein has improved it's educational effectiveness is based on the the questionable assumption that 20 years ago , one half of the students who graduated from einstein high school went to college or university, & today two-third of the students who graduated from this high school represents increase in no. of students.one possibilty is also that 20 years ago 500 students were admitted to this school so no. of student who go to uniersity will become 250 & now if they are only 150 students prefer to study at this school, then two-third of these students will be 100. so in this case 20 years ago schools conditions were better. secondly, the author has not mention what are the criteria used to messure educational effectiveness. school may have apopted some positive changes & some changes may not be so well for the students so we can not say precisely that educational effectiveness has improved. third, the author has not investigated the reasons behind the increase in the ratio, if the reason for the higher ratio is that the students don't have any other option left because some school in nearby area may get shut down on account of insufficient funding. Last but not the list the author's statement that during last 20 years, the school has run succesfully without any additional funding so school can run in same funding for the future also is totally baseless. I mean the requirement of the school can not be predicted accurately. The school may have requirement of improving the infrastructure because school buildin is too old & if maintanance doesn't happen in time it can collapse at any time or the school may require to set up computer lab or canteen facility, so there is no reason to keep old budget & new budget same. In nutshell, The author's conclusion that we do not need to make any substantial increase in the Einstein school’s funding at this time based on the reasoning that improvement in Einstein High school has occurred despite the fact that the school’s funding, when adjusted for inflation, is about the same as it was 20 years ago is invalid because the author fails to explain above flaws.
  4. The following appeared in an article in a health and fitness magazine. “Laboratory studies show that Saluda Natural Spring Water contains several of the minerals necessary for good health and that it is completely free of bacteria. Residents of Saluda, the small town where the water is bottled, are hospitalized less frequently than the national average. Even though Saluda Natural Spring Water may seem expensive, drinking it instead of tap water is a wise investment in good health.” Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc. The author concludes that saluda Natural Spring Water may seem expensive, drinking it instead of tap water is a wise investment to health because Residents of Saluda, the small town where the water is bottled, are hospitalized less frequently than the national average. The author's line of reasoning is that Laboratory studies show that Saluda Natural Spring water contains several of the minerals necessary for good health & that it is completely free from bacteria. first of all the author's conclusion that the Saluda Natural Spring Water is a wise investment to health is based on questionable assumption that the article in health & fitness magazine is unbiased. It's possible that to improve the sell of their mineral water , the manufacturer of Saluda Natural Spring Water has published the advertisement cum article in the health magazine. 2nd the author has not explain how the health of the people of saluda where mineral water is manufactured related to the mineral water, because the author has no evidence that Saluda people drink the water of that Natural spring. It is possible that those people are drinking tap water because that natural spring is far away from that location so mineral water is just bottled there, it's not required that spring itself is in Saluda. 3rd the author has not mention that not only minerals but also some vitamins are required for good health. the tap water also contain enough minerals. the author seems to think that all people who are hospitalized are suffered from the decease cause by the water only, people who injured or have different complexion are also hospitalized. so fact that Saluda people are hospitalized less frequently than the national average is not true indicator in drawing the given conclusion. last but not least the author view that drinking it instead of tap water is a wise investment in good health seems little biased because even the tap water can be made bacteria free by boiling it above 100 degree C & then cooling the steam of the water, so there is no need to pay high amount of money to get bacteria free water. More over there is no point to think that tap water is not bacteria free In nutshell, author's conclusion that saluda Natural Spring Water may seem expensive, drinking it instead of tap water is a wise investment to health based on the reasoning Laboratory studies show that Saluda Natural Spring water contains several of the minerals necessary for good health & that it is completely free from bacteria is invalid because the author fails to consider the above mention flaws in reasoning. :hmm:
  5. The following appeared as part of an article in a magazine on lifestyles. “Two years ago, City L was listed 14th in an annual survey that ranks cities according to the quality of life that can be enjoyed by those living in them. This information will enable people who are moving to the state in which City L is located to confidently identify one place, at least, where schools are good, housing is affordable, people are friendly, the environment is safe, and the arts flourish.” Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc. The author concludes that in City L schools are good, housing is affordable, people are friendly, the environment is safe, and the arts flourish. The author's line of reasoning is that the City L was listed 14th in an annual survey that ranks cities according to the quality of life that can be enjoyed by those living in them. The author's argument is unconvincing for several reasons. 1st of all the author's statement that city L is one of the best option to live based on a survey that was conducted 2 years ago, depends on questionable assumption that the conditions haven't change in this 2 years. The author's hasn't mention that who conducted the survey. whether local Govt. of city L conducted the survey? In this case the survey may be fully biased. one possibility is also that the people whose opinion considered for the survey are atypical, thus their opinions don't represent the opinion of majority. So to draw the conclusion based on biased survey is not convincing at all. 2nd the author fails to explain that how many cities participated in the survey. one possibility is that only 14 City participated in the survey. So in this circumstance, we cannot derive the conclusion that author derives. Last but not least the author has not mention what were the criteria for the survey. I mean what factors were considered while calculating "Quality of life". So if all the criteria mention in the argument are not included in the survey, conclusion is self defeating. it is possible that Schools are excellent in City L but housing is not affordable. It is also possible that environment is safe but art is not flourish. Industry development is excellent but divorce rate is too much high. Means until & unless we don't know all the criteria included in the survey, the conclusion remains unproven. In nutshell the author's conclusion that in City L schools are good, housing is affordable, people are friendly, the environment is safe, and the arts flourish. based on reasoning that the City L was listed 14th in an annual survey that ranks cities according to the quality of life that can be enjoyed by those living in them is invalid because the author fails to consider above mention flaws.
  6. Hi all, If any one has already taken GMAT please clarify me the procedure from entering the test center to getting the work station to give the test.Actually it is quite strange but i want to know what kind of treatment I can expect when i reach the test center. i mean 1)which doc. they will ask as a proof from the people who give GMAT in india. 2)how & when i have to give the name of the B-school i want to apply, can i write down names of my preferred school in piece of paper & show them, or they will ask me to fill a form. I also read somewhere that we have to find the Gmat code of B-school from the list. what if i can't find the code in that list or b-school name is not there at all. please suggest me if i forgot any point. please let me know all these if anyone has gone through same dilemma. Thanks & Regards.
  7. The following appeared as part of an article in a daily newspaper: "The computerized on-board warning system that will be installed in commercial airliners will virtually solve the problem of midair plane collisions. One plane's warning system can receive signals from another's transponder--a radio set that signals a plane's course--in order to determine the likelihood of a collision and recommend evasive action." Discuss how well reasoned you find this argument. In your discussion, be sure to analyze the line of reasoning and the use of evidence in the argument. For example, you may need to consider what questionable assumptions underlie the thinking and what alternative explanations or counterexamples might weaken the conclusion. You can also discuss what sort of evidence would strengthen or refute the argument, what changes in the argument would make it more logically sound, and what, if anything, would help you better evaluate its conclusion. The author concludes that the computerized on board warning system that will be installed in the commercial airliners will virtually solve the problem of midair collision. the author's line of reasoning for that is by this system the airliners will be able to determine the likelyhood of collision & recommend the evasive action. This argument is unconvincing for several reasons. First of all the author's conclusion is based on questionable assumption that new warning system is fully tested. the author hasn't mention anywhere that the new system is bug free & it's ready for use. Second the author has not mention that in the condition in which the new system will fail is there any secondary warning system available or not. the author does not state what is the draw back with present warning system so far which are the methods & technology used to avoid midair plane collision & why they are not succesful & their which drawbacks are going to overcome by the latest computerized warning system. Last but definately not the least the author has not mention anything regarding complexity of operating the present warning system. It's better to evaluate that whether the pilots are comfortable in operating the new system, whether they understand the meaning of each & every signal indication of the new system because if they don't chances are more to misinterpret the signal & take the wrong decisons. in that case the midair collsion may be get increase instead of get decrease. In nutshell, author's conclusion that the computerized on board warning system that will be installed in the commercial airliners will virtually solve the problem of midair collision based on the reasoning that by this system the airliners will be able to determine the likelhood of collision & recommend the evasive action is invalid bacause author fails to consider above mentioned flaws.
  8. 1)“Neither stronger ethics regulations nor stronger enforcement mechanisms are necessary to ensure ethical behavior by companies doing business with this department. We already have a code of ethics that companies doing business with this department are urged to abide by, and virtually all of these companies have agreed to follow it. We also know that the code is relevant to the current business environment because it was approved within the last year, and in direct response to specific violations committed by companies with which we were then working—not in abstract anticipation of potential violations, as so many such codes are.” Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc. 2) The following appeared in a letter to the editor of a regional newspaper: “In response to petitions from the many farmers and rural landowners throughout our region, the legislature has spent valuable time and effort enacting severe laws to deter motorists from picking fruit off the trees, trampling through the fields, and stealing samples of foliage. But how can our local lawmakers occupy themselves with such petty vandalism when crime and violence plague the nation’s cities? The fate of apples and leaves is simply too trivial to merit their attention.” Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc.:hmm:
  9. Hi friends, Please suggest me some points to write on these issues. 1) We shape our buildings and afterward our shape buildings us.” 2) If parents want to prepare their children to succeed in life, teaching the children self-discipline is more important than teaching them self-esteem :hmm:
