Hello All,
I would like to see your advice on my university selection for doing PhD in CS.
This is my background.
Scores: General Test Scores:Verbal: 530. Quants: 780. AWA: 4.0
TOEFL Scores: Reading: 29, Listening: 28, Speaking: 28, Writing: 22, Total: 107
Subject Test Scores: Yet to come. But not very hopeful. Worst case scenario would be above 40 percent. ( I fear to mention the worst case scenario, because while writing the exam, I thought lack of time with 10 in completes would be my worst case scenario, and like all cs algorithms, it turned out be true :-) ) Jokes aside. I am not very happy with the way I did subject test and not sure the effect it would have.Academics: BE Computer Science From National Engineering College, Tamil Nadu. It is very low profile and is currently under Anna University. I graduated in 2002 with 76.8% and stood 8th rank out of 60.Experience: I have 6 years of Experience at an MNC.What makes me think I can go for PhD?
I have 4 USPTO patent applications (from my work), 2 Technical papers published in Industry journals and I contribute to Python language. I have listed the details here for reference. I would like to apply for PhD in Robotics (1st pref) and CS algorithms and complexity (2nd pref)
Universities I have shortlisted:
Ambitious: 1) MIT 2) CMU
Competitive: 1) University of Pennsylvania 2) University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign 3) Texas A & M University 4) Georgia Tech.
Safe: 1) Lehigh University.
Please remember this is to apply for a PhD program. Stanford suggests that students go for MS before PhD, otherwise it is very diifcult to get admit. So, I kind of leaving it out here.
- Would be able to focus my SOP.
- Have 3 good recos.
My time is running out and Dec 15th seems deadline for many of the above listed colleges.
What are your comments on my Selection.
Would you advice me to consider more universities ( like SUNY Brook (safe), Cornell (competitive) or Columbia (competitive) ). I see that robotics and cs program is good in these universities.
Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks,
Senthil
