  4. Hi everyone I did not understand at all this dialogue. I’ll be grateful if you explain to me if it hold any meaning. M- Julie certainly seems to like classical music. W- She doesn’t like just any classical music. What does the woman imply about Julie?
  5. In LONGMAN COMPLETE COURSE FOR THE TOEFL TEST, it has been asked to indicate if these sentences are correct or incorrect. Page 244, Elijah scored more points in yesterday’s basketball final than had any other player in history. The answer key says the sentence is correct. I wonder shouldn’t we have did instead of had in order to have a correct sentence? Page 271, The houses with ocean views could sell for considerably more. Surprisingly the answer key says the sentence is correct. I believe it is incorrect, because it should be in passive form, not active. Of course the houses as subject of the clause cannot sell, but could be sold. What do you think?
  6. Dear Michael I’ve been much obliged to you many times for your complete and precise replies to my questions.[goodjob][clap] Here I am confused with your reply to Q 3. You say “give a hint” means “suggest an answer to a question/way of doing something”, but surprisingly, you present B (offering help) as the correct answer, while the dialogue is about hard problems and “suggest an answer to a question” or in other word “suggesting a solution” seems a better choice. I wonder why A (suggesting a solution) is not the correct one?! Or maybe it is a typo, you did also mean A.:o[|)]
  7. Please let me know the right answer for these questions. I have no answer key for them. I will be thankful if you explain me what the idiomatic statements which they include mean in general. (B) He was standing in front of the class. Q 2: - Are Professor Brown’s lectures fascinating? - I can close my eyes when I’m listening to him and I’m back in the middle ages. - I know what you mean. I’d like to have them back. - Well, I hate to tell you this, but I can’t see to lay my hands on them. What does Adam imply? Q 5: - The science building is so old. 8. These are two other questions from Peterson TOEFL CBT practice tests, part structure. First Q: The higher __________ octave number of gasoline, the less knocking occurs in the engine as the fuel is burned. (A) some (B) the © is (D) than According to the answer key, (B) is correct. I, however, believe © is the right answer, because it provides the missed verb for the first clause. With (B) we have no verb in the first clause while the second clause holds verb “occurs”, and then we have no parallelism. What do you think? Second Q: Life that we know it is based on the element carbon. The answer key says: the correct answer is “that”. The word as should be used in place of that. (as in this sentence means in the way that …) I think the answer is it. it should be omitted, because we have two subjects in this sentence, the first subject is life (which we know is an adjective clause which describes life) and the second subject is it which is redundant and should be omitted. If you do not agree, please clear me up. :shy:[|)]:shy:[|)]

    ETS exams In IRAN

Dear TestMagic As you probably know ETS exams “TOEFL, GRE, GMAT” are not hold in Iran for a long time, say after Islamic revolution. Now it’s said hear and there that in next few months these exams will execute in Iran. Even a magazine newsletter of Iran high education organization has announced this probability. Do you know anything on this matter? Please inform us if you have any right news, because at the moment we Iranian students have to travel to some neighbor country like UAE, Turkey,… to sit for the exams and we must register for the test and prepare for the trip earlier. It would be very helpful if we know what will be our situation with these exams. [heartbeat][heartbeat][heartbeat]

  11. Among Ralph Earl’s most famous paintings is his portrait of Justice Oliver Ellsworth and his wife, Abigail. To provide counterpoint to the severity of the couple, he accurately details the relative luxury of the Ellsworth’s interior furnishings. The view through the window behind them shows sunlit fields, well-kept fences, and a bend of the Connecticut River. One of Earl’s paintings is something of an anomaly. Reclining Hunter, which for many years was attributed to Thomas Gainsborough, shows a well-dressed gentleman resting beneath a tree. In the foreground, he displays a pile of birds, the result of a day’s hunt. The viewer can also see a farmer’s donkey lying in the background, another of the hunter’s victims. The word “he” in line "In the foreground, he displays a pile of birds, the result of a day’s hunt" refers to (A) Ralph Earl (B) The farmer © The hunter (D) Thomas Gainsborough According to the answer key: “The correct answer is ©. The reference is to the “well-dressed gentleman”-that is, the hunter.” I myself believe (A) is correct. The hunter is a figure in the painting, how can it display anything?! In fact, all of the things have been displayed by the painter, Ralph Earl. It is not correct that we choose the reference always the first and nearest name to the referent. Don't you agree with me? Then, clear me up please.
  12. 1- Once known as the “Golden State” because of its gold mines, _____________ . (A) North Carolina today mines few metallic minerals. (B) few metallic minerals are mined in North Carolina today. © there are few metallic minerals mined in North Carolina today (D) today in North Carolina few metallic minerals are mined The answer key introduces (A) as correct answer. I wonder how it could be the right one. I do not understand how the verb “mines” agrees in meaning with its subject. Shouldn’t we have a passive form of verb here? Why are not the other items correct? All seem correct, what is wrong with them? 2- Not until geologists began to study exposed rocks in ravines and on mountainsides they did discover many of the earth’s secrets. According to the answer key, the answer is “they did”.I wonder how inversion occurs when negative signs such as ‘not” appears in the beginning of the sentence? Should we inverse the clause which contains “not”? I mean we must have “Not until did geologists begin …”

  18. Hi my friends:o. I just came across with this sentence in one software to drill English skills: No matter how he was fettered, Harry Houdini escaped. Does it need “inversion”??? I mean replacing the subject and verb? I think since “no matter” has appeared in the beginning of the sentence, it’s required to be corrected as: ” No matter how was he fettered, Harry Houdini escaped.”
