  1. taking on-line courses at Stanford or Illinois-UC could be an option.
  2. I don't seem to well explain things I've learned in undergrads. I wonder if it is normal or I am in serious disability to teach. Do people(profs or TAs) usually spend extreme amount of time preparing the lecture?.....
  3. I think it is not that competitive to get into. probably a good program. but for Phd? I am not so sure..
  4. This is invaluable input. I appreciate this! I have a question though, why noone TAs at Rochester?
  5. Hi. These are the two online math courses you should look at. Only epgy offers Analysis courses and you will need permission to enroll from the "head" of the Program since it is originally desinged for kindergarteners to highschoolers. Both are flexible as I heard from people.(6month for epgy and 4month(two chances of one month extensions) for illinois.) I found illinois more expensive. I am not sure the quality of both programs. hope this helps a little. EPGY University-level Mathematics Courses NetMath, Online Math Course, University of Illinois

  7. Thanks for the reply. So, are you saying this is country-wide phenomenon rather than just Rochester? If it has to do with US immigrant policy, drop in number of applicants must be universial in the US universities. I have not seen anyone who couldn't come to US with Phd admission though:rolleyes:
  8. (Year) (Applications received) (Offered Admission) (to Accepted) 2006 476 59 12 2005 450 61 15 2004 520 73 18 2003 922 66 23 2002 852 60 14 2001 750 75 22 2000 642 90 18 This is the stats I found in their web site. Any comments on the significant drop of applicants from 2004? Thanks folks.:)
  9. I think you guys are all saying the right stuff in the end. I wanted to be sure that I am aiming the right place. Thanks all.
  10. Hello guys. I consider my-self in the category of "not so smart" or "Not smart" kind of group in terms of quickness of comprehesion. It takes time for me to understand something(maybe more than required). I know smart people are out there. One of my friends can calculate some multiplication faster than I do it on calculator(He is more like genius, I guess.):yuck: I try very hard and spend a lot of time studying. And I was wondering these days if I could keep up with Econ PhD program when keeping up with undergraduate classes take me a lot of time.(I wont worry if there was no time limit but we do.) What do you guys think? Are you guys all the smart ones who have no idea what I am talking about? or is there some people like me who can deeply understand what I mean? I dont want to end up failing out and that's why I am asking.
  11. Actually, "more math the better." IMO is very interesting collective thoughts of people who study pure or social science. I don't want to make any judgement here because I know I am ignorant to say anything about that, but, I think it is not the waste of time sit down for a while and think about why we tend to think that way. My naive guess is that because Science is afterall attempt to make solid formula of human activities or universial phenomena, it is valid to say that social or natural science being mathematical has crucial importance to be reliable and accountable. We are talking about sciences not Art. Even though we don't expect Philosophical paper filled up with bunch of mathematical equations, I think they require mathematical precision in their logic in order to be named as a Good philosophical paper. Artistic or sub-consciousness or irrationality are all important and take pivotal part in our daily lives. Looking at Kandinsky's painting might be a priceless experience depends on the veiwers. but, irrespective of how great the kandinsky's paints mean to some people, it's ideas can not be universalized. Sociology lacks Math and I am still curious what they do to be called professionals in the realm of Social Sciences. What I think about Sociology might be wrong and one-sided, so I wanted to hear how people in this forum think.
  12. I don't understand why sociology even exist. We already have specialized departments in academics such as Economics(How we behave in the Market), Anthropology(How we behave in different societies), History(How we behaved in the past), Philosophy(How we think), Political Science(How we fight to dominate) and etc to name few crucial platforms for studying human nature. What can sociology possibly offer us to understand human nature? It seems like it is just a mixture of all the departments with 1 inch depth in all. What they do is scrap news papers about human abortion and figure out its influences on readers' view on abortion, and then they reap to the conclusion "the media forms human ethics." where is it come from? there are too much normative judgements coming from ignorance of good understanding of real academica(philosophy and Statistics in this example) in Sociology. moreover, I think the questions sociology raises are pretty useless. What is the purpose of Sociology? They should disapear physically to give more space to leisure of students of econmics.
  13. What do they study in Sociology department? I am very bigoted, but I can't stop doubting and disliking Sociology!!!!!!!!!!! I derives me crazy to be in the sociology class. It is like magical process of putting hundred of variables into the way you like it with No ground of doing so!! Arrrrrrrrhhhhhhhhhhhhh! :yuck:
  14. I found Micro is focused on behavioral reasoning of a particular entity in the market whereas Macro is more ambiguous in that it deals aggregates. I would say Micro more theoretical and Macro more empirical. Understanding Psychology helps in future Micro scene, I guess. I wish I could know more.
