  1. Most societies do not take their greatest thinkers seriously, even when they claim to admire them." ——————————————— The public has always had ambivilant feelings towards the great thinkers in society. While some individuals may admire the intelligence of gifted intellectuals, most individuals do not take these thinkers seriously. I completely agree with the above statement because great thinkers lead to ideas too novel for the public to understand and the media often ruins their good image. First, the credibility of great thinkers is destroyed by the public’s unwillingness to accept drastically new concepts or ideas. For example, Jackson Pollock was greeted with harsh criticism and contempt when he first began painting his abstract expressionist pieces. These immense paintings appeared to the public as mere scribbles and random brush strokes. Even as he became a famous artist, the public never took Pollock seriously. Society has always been resistant to change. The innovative thinkers generate novel ideas that the public can not even began to understand. Most are ahead of their time and it takes year or even decades for the layman to comprehend. Secondly, the media often generates negative publicity towards the great thinkers of our time. This gives these “celebrities” a negative persona. For example, the world admires the president of the United States. Obviously, President George W. Bush makes some of the world’s most important decisions. However, incessant criticism has turned the public into thinking the President as foolish and brainless. In addition, the media detracts from the actual accomplishments of individuals. For example, Phil Jackson is a hall-of-fame NBA coach and one of the greatest coaches of all time. He is a mastermind and developed the triangle offense that revolutionized basketball. Nevertheless, the media focus and remember him through the feuds with his superstar players on the team. The fact that they won many championships through his coaching career is a distant memory. On the other hand, others may argue that the success of great thinkers breeds fame and admiration. These individuals may give examples of historical heroes such as Albert Einstein. However, as discussed before, a crucial benchmark of a great thinker is his ability to think differently and often against the public’s popular opinion. Einstein flunked out of grade school and was often ridiculed as being a lunatic. Consequently, as he lost respect among his peers, he managed to make the most significant scientific discoveries of all time. In conclusion, great thinkers will never be taken seriously because their ideas are too ingenious to be initially accepted by society. In addition, the media will always try and deride their reputation and create controversy. These innovators must sacrifice admiration in order to be pioneers of the future.
