  1. Thank you haread for the reply. He is not that active on urch forums, so I decided to get the answers to these questions for him. From what I have read on these forums, once a person crosses 30 it starts getting more challenging to get admission into a top PhD program. PhD admissions committee's are wary of giving admits to older applicants. What are your views on this? If you dont mind, could you kindly share the location of your institution where you are pursuing your PhD? Are European schools more 'forgiving', when it comes to granting admission to older PhD applicants as compared to their North American counterparts? Thank you very much again for sharing your thoughts and insight! Really appreciate it. Cheers!
  2. I understand that the opportunity cost of doing a PhD after an INSEAD MBA is huge. But if he does work for 1-2 yrs before joining a PhD program I m sure he will recover the money spent on this prestigious program. Thank you everyone here on urch for their time and comments! Really appreciate it! Cheers!
  3. Thanks a lot Indus!! My brother is currently pursuing his MBA at INSEAD. He will be graduating by the end of this year. His interest incidentally is in strategy/management. Considering that he has almost near the finish line, bailing out right now is not an option. From your post I understand that by working for a strategy group/think tank/top consulting firm he will not greatly diminish his chances of making it to a top PhD program. Thanks again for the reply. I did visit the faculty profile pages of some of the top business schools and quite a few faculty members had professional work experience + MBA before their PhD. I guess my brother should just concentrate now on finishing the program strongly and plan for applications for fall 2013. Thanks! by the way... he is 27 yrs old. :eager:
  4. Thanks possible_phd for the reply! Just a few quick questions for you: 1. How did you convince the PhD adcom of your interest in academia considering that MBA is a professional degree. 2. Did you enroll for advanced courses while doing your MBA? 3. Did you forgo a regular industry summer internship for a RA position with a Professor? 4. If a MBA gradate works for a year after graduation and then applies to a PhD program (considering he/she might want to recover the cost of the MBA program), will it make it that much harder to get accepted at top PhD programs? Thank you very much! Cheers!
  5. Thank you for the reply. I guess he will need to take advanced courses during his MBA program as well as quantitative courses (statistics, LA, etc..) to ensure that he has a strong application ready. Are there any "success stories" here on urch of people who transitioned from a top MBA program to a top PhD management program? Cheers!
  6. Hi! My brother has joined a top international MBA program but now wants to continue towards a top management PhD program. He has an undergraduate degree in engineering (top honors). Considering that he has decided to join a PhD program after enrolling himself in a MBA program, how much more challenging will it be for him to justify his interest in academia? He is currently working with a Prof. at his business school (as a research assistant) and expects to get good recommendations from him. His academic performance has till now been in the top 5% of his class in the MBA program. GMAT:750 GRE:1500 Thanks!!
  7. I agree with you tm_guru. I understand the rigor associated with a PhD program. I honestly want to work in academia and teach. The LSE masters was definitely very demanding! and I do not see a PhD as the 'easy way out'. Thank you everyone for your comments! Cheers!
  8. Good points tm_guru I joined a top consulting firm immediately after my MA from LSE. Having spent some time there I realized that an MBA will help in career progression. Hence joined the MBA program. But to be honest, the hectic lifestyle of a consultant with the constant travel and uncertain schedule really put me off. I have RA work ex with a Professor and looking back now I think that I did have a good time doing research. Hence want to go back to academia and teach! Currently just focusing on keeping my grades high in B-School. Hopefully I will be sharing some good news next year. @JRav: Thank you for sharing this info. Its encouraging.
  9. How common (or uncommon) is it for MBA graduates to pursue a PhD in Economics? I already have an engineering undergrad degree (distinction), LSE Economics masters and am currently enrolled in a top 15 MBA program (Texas). Thanks!
  10. Hi I have been admitted to the MBA class of 2013 at the McCombs School of Business. Best of luck to everyone else waiting or their decision! Cheers!
  11. Hi Antari I am also looking for some good real analysis summer courses (specifically looking for a course in India). I have not come across any good programs in my country yet. The Stanford EPGY online program looks good. I am also interested in an online program since I have a tight budget constraint. I think all the three programs look great. I am at the LSE economics masters program, the real analysis here is a half unit course taught over one term (1 quarter). I believe that intro to analysis should be sufficient to send the right signals to the PhD adcom in the US or elsewhere. Cheers! Kushagra452
  12. IMO 10. there are 5 members who are already not in any team. out of the 12 members let 5 members be also part of the R team. therefore, unique members in S = 7 Unique members in the teams = 25-5=20 Max number of people who are not in any team = 30 -20 =10 :D OA plz
  13. I am undecided between A and C :hmm:
