  1. Dear AdminConsultant Several years from now I hope to attend a top 10 MBA program. In the meantime I'm planning to get a master's degree in my discipline (engineering) while working full time. Here's the situation a) pursue masters at the local university which is tier 2/3, ranked #33 for my discipline. (Please note that my undergrad is from a leading public school and ranked #5/6 for my discipline) b) pursue masters via distance learning at more prestigious school. I'm concerned about the impact of getting a masters from lower ranked school would have on my chance of admission at top MBAs (Northwestern, Dartmouth, Harvard). I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thanks.
  2. Thanks for sharing. I didn't know there was a 2 year MSc in Economics for those without an economics background. I don't think economics is my final destination rather I see it as a means to an end. (I'm currently looking at MIT's technology and policy program) I just want to take some courses in economics and perhaps econometrics to get my feet wet. LSE would be great because it has an outstanding reputation and should provide rigorous training. Does anyone know of other schools that have comparable graduate diplomas or certifications? Thanks
  3. Ecomania, thanks for the input. How did you end up transitioning from career to academia?
  4. Yes I think that's the same thing
  5. Hello, I just discovered I could take classes online towards a postgraduate diploma from the London School of Economics even though I live in the US. I'd be interested in economics or international development diploma. Anyone complete a postgrad diploma or know anything about it? (Especially how challenging, is it respected, does it open doors for you?) Me: I am coming from an engineering background so I would be stepping out of my field while working fulltime. Looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks
  6. Hello David Thanks for all the advice you give on this site. Hopefully you could help me out too. I am a recent college grad and I am interested in furthering my education. I just discovered I could enroll in distance education courses from the London School of Economics to earn a postgraduate diploma even though I live in the US. What do you think about these kind of courses and how do you think admission committees view them? I am an engineer but would be interested in taking economics, international development or business courses. (I haven't decided yet, but something along those lines). Thanks
  7. David I hope you can shed some light on my situation. I am a recent graduate with a bachelor's degree in engineering (3.2 gpa). My school was ranked top 15 for my discipline, but it's a public school ranked top 50 nationally. I am currently working in a technical field related to my major. Although I am currently enjoying my work I would like to eventually (3-5 years) attend a top MBA program then pursue a consulting career. I've considered taking classes on the side or perhaps getting a master's degree (part time) in the same or closely related field as my undergrad. [i like learning.] I'm concerned that the part time grad school is not well known outside of the state, I'm not sure it's ranked in top 100 nationally. Do you think a strong performance (GPA >3.8) would be able to offset my undergrad record? Do you think it might be worthwhile to go for a more recognized online or full time program? Or should I only just take classes that interest me from my alma mater and other schools as a non-degree student. Your input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
