  1. I am curious that for a foreigner(not an European), say, an Asian, or a South American student, suppose he/she is a current PhD student in top Europe continental program, say, TOULOUSE, Carlos III, UPF, Bonn, etc, how about his/her chance to get some summer intern or find some non-academic jobs, like WB, IMF and banking etc when he/she graduate? Is it really hard to do this kind of thing since the economy in Europe is not so good right now. Any relevant information is highly appreciated!
  2. Thank you so much for your so detailed reply! The reason that I wanna apply another institution even after I passes the qualify exam is as follows: Firstly, I am so disappointed with current school. The thing is that the level of difficulty of micro and macro sequece is low. For example, in micro1,2,3, the textbook we use is pinydick and rubinfield (micro 1); MWG (only briefly ch1-ch7, micro 2); An intro to Game theory (Osborne, actually it is undergrad textbook, micro 3, very bad teaching, I have not learned anything from this course). For macro, it is the similar case, so I am really afraid that the basic training is bad for future research. I really wanna a new start for myself. I guess the basic training in Carlos III is much more harder than our current school. Secondly, I am interested in industrial organization, applied microeconomics (e.g. labor, health, crime). However, my current school is weak in these areas. I am not sure abouth the situation of Carlos III. Thirdly, if I choose to go to Carlos III, I will try my best to finish my PhD degree there. However, the attrition rate is very high, nearly 50%. That worries me a lot. I am sure if the student leave the Carlos III for funding reasons, what will they do? go to another institution? I really do not know. Fourthly, some Chinese colleges which are strong in economics have clear ideas about which schools are strong in some fields, even if the schools are not so well known worldwide, e.g. UAB in Spain. So if I go back to China, chances are Ok for me. However, the biggest loss is that if I choose to go to Spain, I will have no chance to find a job (academia and industry) in North America. Is that true? Can you give some comments about these points. Thanks a lot!
  3. Hi guys, I am a Chinese student who has got an offer from Master Program in Economic Analysis and currently I am a second year PhD student in economics with full financial aid at a public university in U.S.A (usnews ranking around 120-130). I will get my master's degree in economics and minor in math this May (I passed the qualify exam last year.). Since the deadline of the offer is May, 6. , I am so eager to ask you some questions about this program. Thanks a lot! Firstly, what is the attrition rate of this master's program? It is said that in the early years, the attrition rate is very high. But it seems that in recent years, the rate has fallen. Is that true? If I choose UC3M, definitely I will try my best to get my PhD degree in UC3M. I will not try to reapply for U.S. institutions again. Secondly, what is the pressure of the first year? I mean, I have found that each semester I need to take 6 courses. Is it a very heavy load? Thirdly, for the placement, I hope to devote myself into industry when I get my PhD degree. Do you think the Spainish Economics Program is more oriented into academics? Or the chance of us to have jobs in industries is pretty small compared with U.S.A.? Anyway, if I will also happy to get a academic job, preferably in China. Fourthly, do you guys think I am really crazy to leave U.S.A. to go to Spain? I mean, there are much more chances in U.S. than in Spain, especially for an international student with not working experience even though Carlos III economics ranking is much much more higher than my current school. Any latest information about this program is deeply appreciated!
  4. HI guys, Due to the harsh application condition this year, I have added these schools in mid March. Actually, I got sooo many rejs from U.S. institutions. :( I clearly know it is very late for these schools. My list is: UC3M (master in economic analysis); TSE M2; Barcelona GSE (master in economics), Bonn, Mannheim and Berlin Doctoral Program in Economics. I got my bachelor in statistics in a very common Chinese universitiy in 2008 and continue my graduate study in an U.S. public university (U.S. ranking 100-120) in economics with full financial aid (GPA: 3.90/4.00). I gonna get my master's in economics and minor in math this May and really hope to get more decent graduate program in economics anyway. Does anyone have some related information about these schools? Any comments are deeply appreciated!
  5. Hi guys, I am a second grad student in econ. I have applied these two summer schools and both get accepted with scholarship (not full) 1. The 2010 Olympia Summer Seminar, July 4-18, Greece. The total cost is 440 euros. The link is Olympia Summer Seminar 2. The ISEO Summerschool with Nobel Laureates in Economics, July 19-26. The link is I The total cost is 700 euros Personally, I am interested in applied microeconomics, especially the crime, health economics. So I am interested in option 1. Option 2 seems like a gathering of nobel laureates in economics teaching some relatively basic stuff about international economics, which is not so proper for me. Does anyone participate in these summer schools in the previous years? Can u share your personal experience about this summer schools, especially option 1. Thanks a lot in advance!
  6. Hello TMers, now I am a first year PhD student from asia. PhD program in my institution will give us the qualify exam at the beginning of 2010. Hence, I have relatively "free" time this summer. I tend to take some summer courses this summer. My college provides us these math and stat courses: 1. Math: Abstract Algebra(upper undergrad level); Mathematics Methods in Engineering (also upper undergrad level) 2. Stat: Sas programming(upper undergrad level); Nonparametric statistsics(grad level); Sampling Technique(grad level) Each of these courses will be 3 credit. I plan to take Nonparametric statistsics and Abstract Algebra. However, my research interests are in IO and game theory. What is your comment about these courses? Actually, the range of the summer courses are quite limited. So as an international student, how can I take some much more advanced level math courses? I just want to reflect the score of these courses on my official transcripts. Anyone has some related informations? Like online courses(EGPY etc) or other ways? Any related reply will be deeply appreciated, or you can talk about your summer studying plans^_^
  7. For OSU, has it send the second-round offer? I checked on the forum and have found that 2-3 TMers who got his fellowship will decline it? So does anyone have some related info about his second-round offer? For SB, I have heard that it has encounted some financial difficulties, however, it has made some initial offers. Anyone who has got initial offers what to accept or decline them? Any related info will be highly appreciated! Thanks all TMers^_^
  8. Thank you for your reply. Suppose you got the offer with full funding, will you accept it?
  9. I have contacted with the admission committee of these two universities and I was on the waiting list of the two. Does anyone who has got the first-round offer? Or do you want to decline the offer? Any related info will be highly appreciated. Thanks^_^
