I gave my GMAT two weeks ago and it was horrible….. but I am all charged up to nail GMAT next time..
Background
I have been in London for the past two years but originally from Bombay. I am a Chartered Accountant from India and have six years of work experience (four in India and two in UK).
Prep time
On and off for two months say two hours in weekdays and four hours over weekends (February and March). Dedicated three weeks before exam (average 8 hrs per day)
Prep test scores
GMAT Prep 1 – 690 (Q41 V 35)
Retired Paper 28 – 670 (Q47 V36)
GMAT Prep 2 – 620 (Q42 V 34)
GMAT Prep 3 – 670 (Q42 V 39)
GMAT Prep 4 – 680 (Q46 V 37)
Test experience
The test centre was comfortable. The test format, screen, colour, etc is almost same as the GMAT Prep.. So practice the Prep tests they are a good simulation of the actual GMAT. You get two 10 mins break. Make the most of it but do remember to arrive two mins early.. Just in case your examiner is not in place you don’t want to loose time off your sections coz the clock wont stop ticking !
The scratch paper is enough for each section though not user friendly. You get lot of time to read the instructions, etc .. which you can put to good use to draw random circles, triangles, a X-Y axis graph, write down formulae, etc. This will save some valuable time.
The question format and concepts tested were similar to those on most study materials such as OG, Prep, Kaplan, etc. In quant there were lot of DS questions and that too on number properties. In verbal there were many SC and that too on idioms. So focus on DS and SC to get high score.
What went wrong?
I was determined to give the exam in three weeks. I guess that was the wrong attitude. You have to give exam when you are completely prepared. The actual score is very close to the one in GMAT Prep. My prep score never once crossed 700 so it was clear I would land up with 650 to 680. I was never completely confident of my maths concepts and under exam pressure I guess I panicked. I was not confident of the answers and took extra time to solve and check them. Hence I landed up with 620.
Mistakes to avoid
1. It is the quality and not quantity that matters
2. Be fundamentally clear on the concepts of maths and SC. DS and SC will bring your score up.
3. Dont be in a hurry to give the exam, give it when u are confident
4. There is lot of material out in the market, decide which suits your need.
Going forward
I want to build up on my fundamental knowledge of the concepts tested in quant and SC. Rest is all about practice.
Need help
Guys, I will really appreciate if someone can help me get a good and reliable source to get my basics right on the 15 odd concepts tested in maths and 10 odd areas tested in SC. I have ample of practice questions, but I need the right approach to each question type...
Hope this debrief will help others avoid the mistakes that I made.
