  1. I've been lurking on this forum for a few months now, and have finally decided to post. I've been waitlisted (or put on hold, as they call it) at Cambridge for their Diploma in Economics program. Since those admissions decisions will likely go out this week, and since I'm anxious, and since if I'm offered a spot I'll likely take it, I have a question about the program. Basically, I've heard two very different versions about the program. The first is this: it's not a very good department; it's inferior to LSE and Oxford according to most, and some would even put it under UCL and Warwic. It's supposed to be light on math, and/or enjoying the prestige and reputation of an 800 year old university unfairly. The second is this: it is TOUGH. Very quantitative, tough to get good marks and progress from Diploma to MPhil to PhD. According to this version, it is truly a world-class program. Which is true? FYI, my background is this: I graduated from an ivy-league school with a top-5 Econ department. However, I was not an econ major, and though I took a lot of econ, my math background is light compared to most people on this forum (calculus and stats, some optimization and linear algebra.) Which is why I worry about the difficulty at Cambridge: I wonder if I can handle it. My goal is to eventually pursue a PhD in economics, at Cambridge or elsewhere.
