  1. Oh yeah, and let's not forget that you would be paying around hundred dollars per application just so they could say "I dont have time to look up your university".
  2. Yeah. What do you get from tmp's posts? If you have always made the right decisions in your life, if you were the best student in your continent, if you only attended to the top universities in the US, if you prepared yourself for this application to a PhD in Economics since you were 10 years old, if your recommenders make perfectly clear that you are a God in your class, only then,...only then, we will consider your application. So, if it takes to be a robot to be accepted in, for example, Harvard, well all the rejects should feel fine. That means you are human and you had a life.
  3. Hey, I was wondering if there are more people like me this year. My university does not provIde funding when you fail quals the first try so I'm giving it another shot at another university (starting over of course). Are there more applicants like me in this regard? And also, do you think we have some advantage (since we kinda saw it all with the masters)? or maybe instead, disadvantage? Any comment or suggestion would be helpful. Cheers!
  4. Hi guys, Sorry if this thread sounds dumb, but at this stage of my program I just realized that networking is actually very important and I happen not to be the best at it. In my case I have been told that I have good mimeos and ideas for potential papers but that in order to publish I should try to contact professors interested in my topics in order to co-author with them and then try to publish. Is this true?, can't I just try to publish something on my own? Or how does this work? On the other hand, I came to realize that some subjects that I have written on are not the main interest for the faculty at my department, so some people tell me I should contact other professors at other departments (universities). Does contacting other faculty at other departments sound like a bad idea? Did any of you guys publish during the PhD? How did it work for you? I know absolutely nothing about this. All I have is good comments on my work (and a lot of energy to work). So please take it easy on me :p Thanks!
  5. I take it that you read Bounded Rationality from Sargent. There he explains what was possible to explain (with the best behavioral approach) and what this new methodology was unable to explain. I personally think that we should definitely work on the path Sargent pointed out, but no one seems to care about it. My macro professors told me it's a dead end. In the end, we all need to find a job after graduation ;)
  6. Regarding internationals coming from developed countries: Some people had to work very hard to get into an European/American school for a Masters. And the money matter affects all these international students directly in the grades matter: Limited scholarships, part time jobs, etc. We didnt have Princeton around (or the subsidized universities in Europe) to apply when we were good students as undergrads, take a loan, and concentrate purely on our studies. Yet, I think there are many who once were international students coming poor countries (Latin America, some countries in Asia) who were given a chance and now thrived in the profession and showed to have a great intuition for Economics and Research. We do know how is it like to leave everything we love in pursue of a career in Economics. I really hope this helps the internationals applying this year. I dont think we should all be measures with same metric.
  7. HI there, I think a few comments are in order: First of all I dont think the discussion should be around the topic of economics as science using too much math. I just wish I has a better preparation for the program thats all. This from a FAQ of a top 20: Math & Economics Course Preparation Regarding math preparation for your program, are there any advanced calculus courses I must take to be able to qualify as a potential Ph.D. candidate? All applicants must have a minimum of one year of college-level calculus. However, one year is likely to be inadequate background for the first year of core classes. Students are therefore encouraged to complete courses in vector calculus, differential equations, linear algebra and mathematical analysis prior to the start of graduate school. In this post I read that the "extra mile" would be doing a little more than one year of relatively easy classes and if possible mathematical analysis. My professor got mad when most of us didnt know how to do the lebesgue stieltjes integral or convolution techniques for stats. Where would I learn that if I consider those courses only as the "extra mile"? My point, in the end, is that as the minimum requirement they should put all those courses above. More than that and I think you could get a Master's in Math. Of course, life would be different if they would be willing to teach instead of demanding from you to know already. I see the contradiction right there. My preparation was average of an applicant, and therefore, I know a lot of people think like me. I think the worst part is watching these annoying preferences from the professors. Maybe it is just my school.
  8. This is new to me. My micro teacher started with all the continuity concepts available for functions and relations ( Upper Hemi Upper Kurtowsky Upper Sequential) along with set theory cauchy sequences etc etc. So compactness and convexity and beyond were supposed to be proved with all those tools. Really painful. According to him he did this because 99% of the top journals are about game theory, and game theory (he said) cannot be understood without all these concepts.
  9. To the rest: thank you very much, I am learning from your posts.
  10. Jesus! there is no need to insult with this kind of mockery. I thought we were serious people here. Or do I really have to explain to you that english is not my first language and therefore try to understand the general idea of my post? I wonder if all americans are like this in the PhD programs (and by that I mean lack of respect in case I didn't put it correctly).
  11. After my first semester in the PhD I came to realize that indeed the math used is very advanced and it takes a lot of time to fully master it. I wonder then why is it that the only requirement in this respect in the admission to a PhD program is to have the usual math courses (calculus lin algebra and undergraduate stats) when the math required in the first year is extremely advanced. In my class there are physicists and mathematicians who obviously do good in the math part and enjoy of the preference of the professors. What is the point then? we should all be mathematicians and consider Economics just a small applied branch. How come they dont ask as a requirement for admission to have a Masters in Math in case you just have an Economics Bachelor? Well I hope someone can share thoughts on this respect. Thanks!
  12. I just heard that in the US a lot of students (in PhDs in general) enhance their academic performance by taking this pill which I am not sure if it is legal without having the ADHD problem. So, is it common? (or allowed?) This is relevant because from what I read here it is tight competion in the PhD in Economics between grad students (even from diffrent schools) and this somehow feels like cheating. Well, any comments are appreciated.
  13. Yikes! So are you saying that if my professor sells me well and knows the right people and if I do a goods paper, this would be the only way in getting a good job?? I hope Rutgers faculty have good contacts.... getting disappointed here...
  14. With the permission of the op, do you guys see Rutgers as a top 100ish school? At least for macro? They have pretty good classes for dsge and bayes metrics but then again this thread makes me think if its worth studying considerin that a guy from princeton or minnesota will always beat me in the job mkt.. What do you guys think?
  15. http://www.www.urch.com/forums/images/icons/icon7.png Please, if you are an Econ PhD student at Rutgers join this group at facebook so we can help each other out, thanks! http://www.facebook.com/pages/Economics/59977405512#!/pages/Rutgers-University-PhD-Economics/116061625092185?ref=ts
