  1. Please advice on the appropriate forum to post the question below; it's from the new GRE PowerPrep. In the early 1980's neuroscientists studying the brain processes underlying our sense of conscious will compared subjects' judgments regarding their subjective will to move (W) and actual movement (M) with objective electroencephalographic activity called readiness potential, or RP. As expected, W preceded M: subjects consciously perceived the intention to move as preceding a conscious experience of actually moving. This might seem to suggest an appropriate correspondence between the sequence of subjective experiences and the sequence of the underlying events in the brain. But researchers actually found a surprising relation between subjective experience and objectively measured neural events: in direct contradiction of the classical conception of free will, neural preparation to move (RP) preceded conscious awareness of the intention to move (W) by hundreds of milliseconds Based on information contained in the passage, which of the following chains of events would most closely conform to the classical conception of free will? A: W followed by RP followed by M B: RP followed by W followed by M C: M followed by W followed by RP D: RP followed by M followed by W E: RP followed by W and M simultaneously

  11. I have posted the information in my last response; OA is E.
  12. The almost universal use of antibiotics as a part of the standard treatment for a wide range of illnesses has two effects that are especially detrimental. First, treatment with antibiotics often kills beneficial bacteria along with the harmful bacteria. Second, a course of treatment with an antibiotic often gives rise to antibiotic resistant bacteria, since the bacteria that survive a given antibiotic are the ones most resistant to it, and they are the only ones left to replicate. From the passage above, it can be properly inferred that the effectiveness of the almost universal use of antibiotics can most likely be improved by doing which of the following? (A) Using only the most powerful antibiotics (B) Varying the dosage of the antibiotic used © Periodically changing the type of antibiotic used (D) Very gradually increasing the dosage of the antibiotic used (E) Raising the dosage at which bacteria are considered to be antibiotic resistant The passage states 2 effects of antibiotics: killing and resistance. Do we look for a choice that mitigates the two effects would a choice that mitigates any of the two side-effects suffice?
  13. The author gives information regarding the opinions of both the researchers and the promoters: Researchers: promotion depends on volume of publication Promoters: promotion depends largely on impact of publications and NOT on volume (amount). Is there anything implying (or suggesting) that the author's line of thinking is in consonance with that of the promoters - that promotion hinges on impact? Well, choice E (the correct answer) says that promotion depends on volume (amount) of publications; Yes, volume because when you split a single publication onto multiple journals, the volume increases but we cannot say anything about its impact.
  14. Sorry, there was a typo error in (2); the correct sign should be less than(). OA is B.
  15. Junior biomedical researchers have long assumed that their hirings and promotions depend significantly on the amount of their published work. People responsible for making hiring and promotion decisions in the biomedical research field, however, are influenced much more by the overall impact that a candidate's scientific publications have on his or her field than by the number of those publications. The information above, if accurate, argues most strongly against which of the following claims? a. Even biomedical researchers who are just beginning their careers are expected already to have published articles of major significance to the field. b. Contributions to the field of biomedical research are generally considered to be significant only if the work is published. c. The potential scientific importance of not-yet-published work is sometimes taken into account in decisions regarding the hiring or promotion of biomedical researchers. d. People responsible for hiring or promoting biomedical researchers can reasonably be expected to make a fair assessment of the overall impact of a candidate's publications on his or her field. e. Biomedical researchers can substantially increase their chances of promotion by fragmenting their research findings so that they are published in several journals instead of one To argue against the claims of the passage, do we have to undermine the position of the Researchers or against that of those hiring?
  16. Fossils of a whale that beached on an African shore more than a million years ago and was subsequently butchered by hominids have been recovered by paleontologists. A. that beached on an African shore more than a million years ago and was subsequently butchered by hominids have B. that beached on an African shore more than a million years ago and then was subsequently butchered by hominids has C. that beached on an African shore more than a million years ago, which was subsequently butchered by hominids, has D. having been beached on an African shore more than a million years ago and subsequently butchered by hominids, have E. having beached on an African shore more than a million years ago and then subsequently were butchered by hominids have In furtherance to the response of the question above: Is it correct to say "fossils of a whale that were..." to mean an effect on the fossils but not the whale? What is the correct grammatical structure for such? Preposition + Noun + Verb. I want to know what indicators inform us whether the verb modifies the "Noun" or the Subject in the "Preposition".
  17. sorry, my question is in isolation of the remaining options. If coined that way, C looks like this: As did Haydn, Schubert wrote...
  18. @ Wadhwanin, Thanks for taking the time to explain further. More workers in the unemployment pool means further constraint on the company to pay further taxes and insurance benefits to those set of workers. As a result, the company loses more rather than save more money. Its clearer.
  19. @ Guysertbun007, appreciate your contributions; I would post the OA as well as the Official explanations after some appreciable number of other inputs.
  20. Grateful if I could have further clarifications on this question as requested. I would appreciate your efforts. Thanks.
  21. Although parapsychology is often considered a pseudoscience, it is in fact a genuine scientific enterprise, for it uses scientific methods such as controlled experiments and statistical tests of clearly stated hypotheses to examine the questions it raises. The conclusion above is properly drawn if which of the following is assumed? (A) If a field of study can conclusively answer the questions it raises, then it is a genuine science. (8) Since parapsychology uses scientific methods, it will produce credible results. © Any enterprise that does not use controlled experiments and statistical tests is not genuine science. (D) Any field of study that employs scientific methods is a genuine scientific enterprise. (E) Since parapsychology raises clearly statable questions, they can be tested in controlled experiments. can someone please explain how to arrive at the solution using CR logics: something like A => B to strengthen: if not A, then not B; B => A is not applicable etc, etc I requested for this logic as a means of distinguishing between options C and D. Thanks
  22. When demand for a factory’s product is high, more money is spent at the factory for precautions and machinery maintenance than when demand is low. Thus the average number of on-the-job accidents per employee should be lower during periods when demand is high than when demand is low and less money is available for safety precautions and machinery maintenance. Which of the following, if true about the factory when demand for its product is high, casts the most serious doubt on the conclusion drawn above? (A) (A) its employees ask for higher wages than they do at other times (B) (B) its management hires new workers but lacks the time to train them properly © © its employee are less likely to lose than they are at other times (D) (D) its management sponsors a monthly safety award for each division in the factory (E) (E) its old machinery is replace with modern, automated models. Source: OG12 ed. I seem to have a problem understanding the explanations given. This is my impression:: High demand: adequate cash was spent for better safety precautions and machinery maintenance, while meeting the requirements or the increased demand. To weaken, I though of attributing the increased precaution meeting demands requirements to option E (replacing old machinery with modern, automated models)... I was wrong. Could anyone explain better please? So,
  23. If I may ask, should option C be "As did Haydn, Schubert..." would it be a correct expression in GMATLand?
  24. @GnmatRup, could your please explain your choice of A, especially as it relates to tenses? Thanks.
  25. According to some analysts, the gains in the stock market reflect growing confidence that the economy will avoid the recession that many had feared earlier in the year and instead come in for a "soft landing," followed by a gradual increase in business activity. (A) that the economy will avoid the recession that many had feared earlier in the year and instead come (B) in the economy to avoid the recession, what many feared earlier in the year, rather to come © in the economy's ability to avoid the recession, something earlier in the year many had feared, and instead to come (D) in the economy to avoid the recession many were fearing earlier in the year, and rather to come (E) that the economy will avoid the recession that was feared earlier this year by many, with it instead coming
