Topic: The mass media, including TV, radio and newspapers, have great influence in shaping people's ideas. To what extent do you agree or disagree this statement? Give reasons for your answer.
We are living in a society where all kind of mass media, including TV, radio and newspapers, play important roles in our modern life. They have changed our life very much. There are many views express that the mass media have great influence in shaping people's ideas. Do really public mass media could affect people minds? And if it does, how strong this influence? This essay will explain my argument about these questions.
I think that everything around us has influence on our behavior and life. Mass media, besides providing us useful information and entertainment, has a great influence in shaping people's ideas, both for the better and for the worse.
Firstly, it is accepted that mass media affect our fashion. Simply take a glance at the way the young dress nowadays. What they are wearing may look similar to what famous actors or singers have worn recently. And all of the things they often to is to imitate the models appear every day in fashion shows. It was probably something they pick up over the internet, television and magazines.
Secondly, it is obvious that the mass media have an effect on our attitude in life. Nowadays people, especially the young, tend to be lazier and more violent. This is simply the result of bad programs shown on T.V all time, uncontrollable websites and even the carelessness of parents. They can spend whole day surfing internet or watching TV instead of studying or traveling with family and friends… People, especially teenagers, always have an idol and they tend to follow what their idols do and say no matter these things are good or bad. For example, a Japanese guy got married to a game character in November, 2009. Or, many women got cosmetic surgeries to look like their idols. Seriously, some people are ready to kill a person just because they want to become a movie character.
Finally, we can not deny that the mass media have a great contribution to shaping our ways of thinking. What we watch on TV; what we listen to on radio; what we read in newspaper and magazine affect a great deal to our thinking. Does food advertisement on TV affect your choice? Does information about universities on newspaper make you embarrassed to decide the best one for you child? I definitely believe the answer will be "yes" because these information influenced on your thought and ruled your decisions.
In short, mass media undoubtedly affect our life style and opinions. We could not fade its influence away. However we could control it by thinking carefully before deciding when approaching information through the mass media.
