  2. 26. ------------------------------ The following appeared in a memo from the chairperson of the school board in the town of Saluda. "For the past five years, Mr. Charles Schade has been the music director at Steel City High School, and during that time the school band from Steel City High has won three regional band competitions. In addition, the quality of the music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments at Steel City High has improved markedly over the past five years. Because of such successes at Steel City High, the Saluda school board should hire Mr. Schade to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system." Please Rate My Essay, I really do need guidance. The author proposes hiring Mr. Charles Schade, the music director at Steel City High School, to plan and direct the general music education programs for the entire Saluda school system. To substantiate his proposal, he mentioned that during the past five years the Steel City High School has won three regional band competitions and its music rehearsal facilities and musical instruments has improved markedly. The reasoning of the argument is based on several fallacious assumptions as described below. At first, the author ascribes the winning of the Steel City School in the five years of three regional band competitions to Mr. Charles Schade. No evidence is given that the Steel City School didn’t win regional band competitions before Mr. Charles became a director. May be the Steel City School has always been winning regional band competitions. And even if the school hasn’t been used to win regional band competitions, may be the current students of the school are really talented and this is the actual reason behind the winning of the regional band competitions. Secondly, no given evidence ascertains that the improved rehearsal facilities and musical instruments in the Steel City School were due to the effort of Mr. Charles Schade. May be this is due to some donations given to school by a generous donor or some parents of some students donated to the school in order to help their children improve their talents. Finally, assuming that Mr. Charles is behind the success in the music education in the Steel City School, it’s not guaranteed that the same success can be achieved in the Saluda School. May be the music practice is some part of the traditions of the Steel City so they have large number of talented students in music. However, this may not be the case in the Saluda City. In sum, to substantiate the author’s statement more information about the history of achievements of the Steel School before Mr. Charles is to be mentioned, information about the actual reasons for the improved rehearsal facilities and musical instruments, and finally evidence that the same results achieved in Steel City School can be achieved in Saluda School.
  3. 19. ------------------------------ The following appeared in a letter from the manager of a rock band named Double Rice. "One year ago, tickets for Double Rice's concerts in stadiums around the country took, on average, at least 24 hours to sell out, if they sold out at all. But the band has been enjoying a surge in nationwide popularity among 14 to 25 year olds, and the 30,000 tickets for a recent concert in Megalopolis sold out in 12 minutes. Clearly the ticket sales in Megalopolis are a result both of the band's increased popularity and of the advertising campaign run in Megalopolis by the Ad Lib advertising agency. Thus, in order to ensure that the band's success in Megalopolis is repeated across the country, the band should hire Ad Lib to duplicate the Megalopolis ad campaign on a nationwide scale." Please Rate My Essay, I really need help. The letter of the manager of the Double rice rock band proposes hiring the Ad Lib advertising agency in order to ensure that the band’s success in Megalopolis is repeated all over the country. To substantiate his claim the manger cites the success of the last concert held in Megalopolis which 30,000 tickets have been sold out in only 12 minutes. However, the letter has many flaws that make the conclusion unconvincing. Firstly, the author admitted that one year ago the tickets of the band’s concerts used to take at least 24 hours to sell out, if they sold out all, but this has changed and the band has been enjoying a surge in nationwide popularity among 14 to 25 years olds. Actually no evidence is given of this surge in popularity. May be statistics of the brand’s fans club would help substantiating this claim. Secondly, the second reason to which the manager ascribes the extraordinary success in Megalopolis other than the surge in popularity is the advertising campaign run by the Ad Lib advertising agency. Again there is no evidence that the success of the concert, represented in the complete selling out of the tickets in very short time, was due to the advertising campaign. May be the time at which the concert was held was in the beginning of the summer break so all the youth are eager to attend music concerts and start enjoying their vacation and that most of them knew about the concert from their friends not from an advertisement. Statistics about the number of the audience that knew about the concert from the advertisements can support this point. Finally, the author claims that hiring the Ad Lib advertising agency will repeat the success in Megalopolis all over the country. There is no evidence that guarantees that the Ad Lib agency campaign will succeed nationwide. May be the success of the campaign is based on the understanding of the people in Megalopolis and how to convince them to attend such concert, which won’t be the same for nationwide scale. In sum, the reasoning line of the letter could be ameliorated by supplying statistics about the fans club of the band, the actual reasons for the selling out of the tickets in Megalopolis, and finally giving evidence to support the claim of nationwide success expected by the Ad Lib advertising agency.
  4. 17. ------------------------------ The following appeared in a letter to the editor of the Walnut Grove town newspaper. "Walnut Grove's town council has advocated switching from EZ Disposal (which has had the contract for trash collection services in Walnut Grove for the past ten years) to ABC Waste, because EZ recently raised its monthly fee from $2,000 to $2,500 a month, whereas ABC's fee is still $2,000. But the town council is mistaken; we should continue using EZ. EZ collects trash twice a week, while ABC collects only once. Moreover, EZ—which, like ABC, currently has a fleet of 20 trucks—has ordered additional trucks. Finally, EZ provides exceptional service: 80 percent of respondents to last year's town survey agreed that they were 'satisfied' with EZ's performance." PLEASE RATE MY ESSAY. “I hope I’m going on the right way” The statement of the author looks convincing in the first glance but careful reading of the evidence provided shows the following flaws. Firstly, the author assumes that the Walnut Grove’s town council had taken the decision of changing the trash collection company based only on the increased monthly fees of the current company. May be the current company has violated any of the contract items with the town council like not going on with the modern technologies of trash recycling which resulted in environmental problems around the town. Secondly, the frequent number of times the current company collects trash per week cannot be taken as an advantage because the trash produced by any family or store in two or three days isn’t the quantity that needs the trash company come and take away. Thirdly, the author mentioned that the EZ-company has been collecting trash from the town for ten years, so the fleet used by the EZ-company consists of really old trash cars that use obsolete technologies in collecting trash. May be the fleet of the ABC company consists of up to date cars. Finally, no statistical data is given about the number of the people who participated in the survey. May be only very few people participated and they do not represent the majority of the town’s residents. In sum, the statement could be more convincing if the real reasons for the decision of the town council are mentioned and if the fleet of the EZ uses up to date trash collection technologies or not. Moreover, statistical information about the conducted survey is to be given.
  5. 110) The following appeared in a memo from the Principal of Sherwood Junior High School. "It appears that the lighting in Sherwood High's classrooms, which have large windows but minimal overhead light sources, is impairing student academic performance and teacher morale. Records show that during December and January, the two months with the fewest hours of daylight, attendance rates fall, average daily class participation drops, and grades decline. Teacher resignations are also highest during these months. According to a study of Tundra Vocational School, which experiences entire seasons with little daylight, students' grade point averages increased when Day Glow light bulbs, which mimic sunlight, were installed in classrooms. This study suggests that Sherwood can improve students' academic performance and teachers' morale by using Day Glow light bulbs in winter." Please rate my essay .. The memo discusses the reasons of the low academic performance of the students and teachers’ morale in Sherwood Junior High School. The author thinks that the main reason is the lack of proper lightening within the classrooms. A point of view which he supports by the fall of the attendance rates, drop of the average daily class participation, and the declining of the grades during December and January. On the other hand the performance of another school which uses Day Glow light bulbs in the winter to lighten the classrooms is presented. The logic of the author is flawed in points as follows. Firstly, the fall of the attendance rates and the daily class participation may be due to the bad weather conditions. May be many of the students live not in the vicinity of the school and meanwhile the weather condition in this area is very severe in winter. So, the bad weather conditions blocks them from going to school. Secondly, this time of the year may be the time to apply for new teaching positions in other schools and this is the reason behind the increased rate of teachers’ resignations. Moreover, no evidence has been given that the teachers’ resignations rate is decreased when the Tundra Vocational School has installed the Day Glow Light bulbs. Thirdly, no evidence is given that the weather conditions in the area of the Tundra Vocational School are severe so as to block the students from going to school. It may be cloudy most of the time but the weather is moderate. Also maybe the installation of the Day Glow Light bulbs was a part of an overall maintenance of the school, including painting the classrooms, getting new equipment to the labs and so on. So, this may be the real reason behind the increased academic performance of the students. In sum, the logic of the author is very weak and the memo can be more cogent if the weather conditions of the schools areas are compared and statistics of the teachers’ resignations rate in both schools are compared.
  6. The purpose of the statement presented by the speaker is to propose a way to improve the profits of the Fancy Toy Company which had bad profits during the last three quarters of this year. The speaker came to a conclusion that the president of the company is the only reason of the bad profits and suggests hiring another president who had achieved high profits for the Starlight Jewelry Company. The conclusion of the speaker is based on very weak evidence that we’ll discuss as follows. Firstly, the speaker assumes that the current president of the company is a failure on the basis of the low profits in the last three quarters of the current year, where as he considers the president of the Starlight Jewelry company, a successful one on the basis of the high profits over several years. It’s clear that the comparison is completely unfair. The low profits within this year may be due to an overall collapse in the activity of the market, so all the companies will face the same problem and it wouldn’t be the mistake of the current president. Secondly, the period on which the performance of both presidents is evaluated must be comparable. Moreover, the speaker didn’t mention anything about how long have the current manager been hired and what about the profits within this period. He may have been working for long years and had achieved high profits during these years. Thirdly, no evidence is given that the Starlight Jewelry Company has achieved high profits this year, and if so we cannot compare the two companies because of their different activity. Maybe the market of jewelry is flourishing and the toy market isn’t. Finally, there is no guarantee that the current president of the Starlight Jewelry Company will achieve the same success she could achieve in the jewelry field. So, hiring her with twice the salary of the current president with no experience in the field of toys will make the company situation much worse. In brief, the statement can be more convincing if the comparison between the two presidents is based on the same period of time and a proof that the suggested new president has experience in the field of toys is given.
