  1. Thanks a lot for the detailed reply....strong LOR and well written SOP is a must for me as my GPA are not stellar...how about Boston U or Texas A&M or U of Texas or Rice U? Does Texas A&M or U of Texas or Rice U fall within the 40-50 range? How do you rate their economics department interms of the quality of research and guidance by faculty? Thanks again for all the advice...
  2. Thanks a lot for your comments. What did you do eventually? How many schools did you apply overall and specifically in the 40-70 rankings?
  3. Thanks a lot for your honest comments....First year unfunded offers would be fine....and i agree finance courses in MBA would not help much in PhD economics...
  4. thanks a lot for the reply. My rank in under grad was not so good, just made it in the top 20s of my class. This bit worries me a lot. Morever, iam not sure if i have the requiste math as required for the PhD program. Math coursework at MBA finance level is never as intense as what gets covered in MSc economics or statistics course. Would this profile sail through Boston U? Can you suggest me some universities where can i apply for research in industrial Organization? Would online course on Math be helpful? There are some good courses for Math at University of Illinois. Again, my worry here is the high cost per subject...
  5. Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum and this is my very first post. Here's my profile for evaluation: Type of Undergrad: Bachlors in Commerce with honors in Accounting Undergrad GPA: 2.9 / 4.0 Type of Grad: MBA in finance and Economics; Medium ranking B school in India. Grad GPA: 3.5/4.0 Work Experience: Post MBA i have 5 and 1/2 years of Tax Consulting work experience (currently at a middle management level) in the field of Transfer Pricing GRE: Yet to take; Expect to get >780Q, >700V and awa 4.5 Math Courses: Linear Algebra (B+), Calculus I and II (A), Business Statistics (A), Probability (A) Econ Courses: (in MBA) : Microeconomics (A+), Macroeconomics (B+), Basic Econometrics (B), Game Theory(B), International Economics (A), Financial Economics (B+) Other Courses: About 7-8 as Finance major in MBA Letters of Recommendation: 2 from Senior economists with phd from Boston U and from Brown. 1 economics professor who taught me in MBA. I don't expect them to be very well known, but they would have a good word to say. Research Experience: Research during my MBA related to Transfer Pricing, but nothing spectacular; Currently working on a economics research paper along with our senior economist on issues related to Transfer Pricing. Expect it to be published soon Teaching Experience: None Research Interests: Industrial Organization I am contemplating applying for a PhD program and was wondering what the admission chances are for me, and how my GPA will play into this. Would my work experience help in PhD admissions. Its my work in the field of Transfer Pricing that has motivated my interests in pursuing a PhD program with research in Industrial Organization. This field of economics is very closely related to my work and would want to pursue a career in consulting after completion of PhD. Alternatively, should i take up a masters degree first. My major concern is the prohibitive costs for the same. I'd appreciate any help from you guys. Best regards,
