  1. Hi, I learnt from the list with 3500 words. It can be found online very easily though i prefer to learn from the Barron's book. I would suggest that you learn 3500 words if possible. I haven't gone through any high frequency word lists. So I don't really know how helpful/relevant they are. All the best !!!
  2. This post is long overdue. I sincerely thank each one of you who has taken the time to share their experiences, advices and mistakes which has benefited so many of us. I took my test in the first week of Dec. Test Preparation 3.5 months (including first few weeks of warm up :-)) Verbal Barron's 50 wordlist : Indispensable. After you finish learning the wordlists it is very important that you continue to review them regularly, however boring and monotonous it gets.I cannot emphasize this fact enough. Towards the end I used Barron's flashcards from Quizlet.com to keep it interesting. I even downloaded few audio clippings where a man reads aloud the words in Barron's along with the meanings !!!. I resorted to them when i could not bring myself to revise the word lists. Big book tests : I did the first 15 sets(each set contains 2 tests) On an average I used to get around 7-8 wrong.Still, it offered good practice especially for the reading passages. Quantitative Barron's math review : It provides good review especially if you are out of touch with math basics like me.I worked through all the problems just to gain some confidence as I always make silly mistakes in Math. Also, I tend to spend too much time on calculations.I hoped that thorough practice will help alleviate these issues. Nova Math : Excellent practice which covers all math sections. 501 Quant comparison questions : I worked through almost all the problems . 1014 gre practice questions : It contains really challenging questions. But it has numerous printing errors. There is a .pdf document available online which lists all errors with their corrections. Do go through the book if you have the patience to look past its printing errors. Apart from this, I also downloaded few DI questions as that was my weakest area since I am not fast with calculations. Practice tests Barron's CD : Not good at all. Its better to buy the book without the CD.Get the Kaplan CD instead. Kaplan CD :The practice verbal and quantitaive sections and the full tests.I feel the quantitative section is more challenging than actual test. Peterson Cat : I also Did 1 or 2 tests from the book.It was a long time back. So I don't remember much about the difficulty level. Manhattan GRE : I purchased their package of 5 tests when I was just 1 week away from my actual test.So I religiously gave a CAT every day.The quantitative section was really challenging. The graphs given are way too difficult to interpret and so are the related questions. But I feel their scoring is odd because I always got 750+ in quant even if 5-6 questions were wrong in the first 10. Powerprep 1 : v740 q750 powerprep 2 : v610 q790 (very close to the real test) I also solved the free CAT available in the websites for Kaplan, princeton review,Manhattan Gre.(Don't forget about about the free resources !!!) The Real Deal I hadn't paid much attention to the analytical section. So I was glad when i got not so difficult topics.Even though I know that 4 is not a great score in AWA I am more than pleased with given the fact that I hadn't prepared much. I first got the verbal section. Even though the words were all familiar to me I was constantly debating between two choices. I was sure that I was not doing so well but really tried not to get bogged down and continued to attempt to the best of my ability. I got 3 reading passages, none of which i could 100% satisfaction. In fact ,I skipped reading the last one completely and just randomly guessed through the questions beacuse I wanted to get to the last few antonym questions. I did those correctly and finished the test with 2 minutes to spare.I sat wondering if it was a bad idea to not read the last passage.Anyways ,I decided that there is not much that I could do about it.I just hoped that was the unscored section :-) Next I got the quantitative section. It was really very easy.It was nothing like the practice tests I had given. It was much much easier. In fact,I was wondering if I had goofed up in the first few questions because of which I was getting easy questions.I did get 3-4 question in probability but nothing hard or complicated. I got 2 DI .Both the graphs and the questions were relatively straightforward. Then I got an identified research section. There was no hidden (unscored) section. I was overjoyed with my score.I was expecting the worst in the verbal section.Thank God that was not the case ! Good luck to all of you !!! :)
  3. Can you please explain the parabola question
  4. mk2009

    line equation

if the equation of the line is 3x-y
  5. Equation of parabola is y=x^2 + 10 A line intersects it at (1,9) and (3,y) find y. Standard deviation col a : standard deviation (1,1,1,1,1) col b :1 probability There are 10 students in a class,6 boys and 4 girls.Find the probability of selecting 6 students from the class if 2 particular girls must be selected.
  6. I got D) Case 1 : x= 5 y=2 |x - 2| >y |5 - 2| >y 3 > 2 |x|=|5|=5 >2 Hence A is the sol in this case Case 2: x = -2 ,y = 2 |-2-2|>y |-4| >y 4 > 2 |x| =|-2|=2 Hence |x| = y So C is the solution in this case Hence double case and so the solution is D)
  7. I got 18 too .I found in one of the gre prep sites. It did not have a solution and 1440 was the highlighted answer. So i thought i was missing something obvious and hence decided to post it here.So I guess the answer given was wrong in the site
  8. How many different differences can be obtained by taking 2 numbers at a time from the set 3,5,2,10,15? Ans 1440
  9. Sueka,Can you please post the answers to your questions?

  11. The following is a recommendation from the director of personnel to the president of Professional Printing Company. "In a recent telephone survey of automobile factory workers, older employees were less likely to report that having a supervisor present increases their productivity. Among workers aged 18 to 29, 27 percent said that they are more productive in the presence of their immediate supervisor, compared to 12 percent for those aged 30 or over, and only 8 percent for those aged 50 or over. Clearly, if our printing company hires mainly older employees, we will increase productivity and save money because of the reduced need for supervisors." The author suggests that hiring older employees in Professional Printing Company will increase productivity and save money. His recommendation is based on a telephone survey of automobile factory workers. Firstly ,the comparison between automobile workers and a Printing company workers is not justified .Each industry has varying requirements for productivity, scope of work .So what holds true for one industry might not do so for another. To put forth a recommendation which is only based on a telephone survey is not appropriate. A survey conducted through telephone is not always reliable as people do not take such surveys seriously. Secondly, older employees are more likely to demand a higher pay than younger workers because they are more experienced. So hiring older employees might prove to be more expensive for the company ,contrary to what the author suggests. Also there is a good possibility that older workers .especially those aged 50 or over, are in a state of failing health, which in turn might affect their productivity. In this regard, hiring younger workers will be a better option. To sum up , the author‘s conclusion seems unconvincing as it is based on flawed reasoning and insufficient evidence. If he can back up his conclusion with statistics from more definitive sources readers will be more inclined to agree with him.
  12. The following was posted on an Internet real estate discussion site. "Of the two leading real estate firms in our town — Adams Realty and Fitch Realty — Adams is clearly superior. Adams has 40 real estate agents. In contrast, Fitch has 25, many of whom work only part-time. Moreover, Adams' revenue last year was twice as high as that of Fitch, and included home sales that averaged $168,000, compared to Fitch's $144,000. Homes listed with Adams sell faster as well: Ten years ago, I listed my home with Fitch and it took more than four months to sell; last year, when I sold another home, I listed it with Adams, and it took only one month. Thus, if you want to sell your home quickly and at a good price, you should use Adams." The post in the Internet real estate site claiming that Adams Realty is superior to Fitch Realty certainly appears convincing at first glance. But the initial belief soon gives way to doubts as it becomes evident that the claim is based on flawed reasoning. The author writes that there are 40 employees in Adams Realty whereas Fitch only has 25 agents,. Number of employees is not the sole marker of success of a firm ,especially a Real estate agency. He also points out the fact that that many of Fitch agents are part time employees, as a flaw Many a time, the pay of part- time employees are commission based because of which it is only logical to assume that they would be more driven to close a deal than the full time employees. Hence part time employees may be more beneficial to the agency contrary to what the author suggests. The author has used the statistics of only the past year to show that Adams Realty revenue was more that that of Fitch Realty . His contention would be more persuasive if he provided statistics showing that Adam Realty has constantly outshone Fitch Realty in the past years. He quotes a personal example saying that his house sold faster when he listed it in Adams .Lot of factors influence a house sale like location of the property, existing mortgage rates, general state of the economy etc. We do not know if he has taken these market conditions into consideration before coming to his judgment. To sum up we can say that even though the author’s claim of Adam Realty being a superior real estate firm might be true, he fails to convince his readers because his arguments and statistics are not supportive enough.
