  1. Disregard option C explanation . Here is my another take, Crisis is a singular and Crises is a plural. So Crises in international diplomacy do not always result from malice; It is SUBJECT - VERB agreement, only Option A satisfies rest all fails. Don't think about reading after ";" All options sound incorrect.
  2. Your point is correct but i read it like this do not always results from malice; nations, [such as individuals, can find themselves locked into difficult positions] , unable to back down nations for example would have been wrong but not sure about nations, for example individuals
  3. " E has the phrase with more than 300 rivers draining into it....GMAt does not prefer the structure in the form of " with ....+Verbing" " I found this note from other gmat club. I have to disregard my explanation for D, which is not even close contender. Correct answer is A. In all possible ways option A comes out clean
  4. ewrite the eqn 27 x = 9a + 2B + c sub abc = 000,001,010,011,100,101,110,111, First three subs we can eliminate A, B and C We can also eliminate E and only remaining is D.
  5. Rewrite the eqn 27 x = 9a + 2B + c sub abc = 000,001,010,011,100,101,110,111, First three subs we can eliminate A, B and C We can also eliminate E and only remaining is D.
  6. I didn't get your explanation for e). How all of them are divisible by 4 except when n =5, what about when n = 1. divisible by 4 whenever n is odd also possible like when n = 3.
  7. Here is how i solved : The sum Sn of the first 'n' terms = n/2 [2a + (n-1) d] 1+3+5+....K. Here d = 2, a = 1 so nth term represented as a + (n-1) d Here nth term is K Sum = n/2 [ a + K] =421 ----------- 1 and also k = 1 + (n-1 ) 2 = -1 + 2n => K + 1 = 2n --------------- 2. 1 Can be written as n/2 [1 + k] = 421 => n[1+k] = 882 substituting eqn 2 here n[2n] = 882 2n^2 = 882 n^2 = 441 n = 21. 2n = 1 + K k = 2n -1 = 42 -1 = 41
  8. Well, I am also confused whether to go about Permutations or Combinations : But I follow these rules , to identify : 1. Permutation is sampling without replacement but with ordering. 2. Combination is sampling without replacement but without ordering. With ordering I mean ABCD is being different from DCBA. Without ordering I mean ABCD is same as DCBA Above question seems to be with replacement but with ordering [ order matters, ABCD is being different from DCBA as gmathinstdotcom said ], Since it is with replacement we cann't use Npr formulae. So the rule for this is N^R , Since we have two different type either 4 letter or 5 letters. The answer is : 26^4 + 26^5 = 26^4+(26^4*26) => 26^4[1+26] = (26^4 ) * 27 I think, in GMAT with replacement [ where repetition is allowed ] type questions are very rare.
  9. Read the option B like this [ without prepositions, "of", "in"] The use...is based on the assumption that lying produce ....reactions....that creates... responses. This is what the gist of the sentence. Now look at the reactions..and responses both are in plural. So create is also expected to be in plural. Read this sentence : The use is based on the assumption that lying produce reactions that, create responses. Now in turn can be placed anywhere after the subject [ use of lie detectors ]. Finally, use of lie detectors create unconscious physiological responses NOT the use of an individual which sentence doesn't make sense at all.
  10. Correct Explanation from rnbp9 it is A.
  11. I think, "D" is the answer. Here is my explanation for my option : I read option D like these ways ( Remove the underlined part and read it, still it make sense.) 1. While more than 300 rivers drain into it, Siberia's Lake Baikal holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water, which is more than all the North American Great Lakes combined. 2. While more than 300 rivers drain into it, Siberia's Lake Baikal holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water, which is more than all the North American Great Lakes combined. 3. While more than 300 rivers drain into it, Siberia's Lake Baikal holds 20 percent of the world's fresh water, which is more than all the North American Great Lakes combined. Apply same rule ( remove the phrase before comma ) to other options.
  12. I think, "C" is the answer. There are few rules i used to eliminate the answer. 1. Not to use just like, just as so eliminated options B & E 2. There is a rule which says " NEVER use a semi-colon and a coordinating conjunction together " There are seven coordinating conjunctions: For,And,Nor,But,Or,Yet and So ( FAN BOYS ) Then option A ruled out. 3. Option D doesn't makes sense to me. ( results from Vs results of ) 4. Then finally, Option C . The option sentence make sense in different grammar rules. i. do not always results from malice; nations, unable to back down. ii. do not always results from malice; nations, such as individuals, unable to back down [ Note, nations will have citizens, here it means individuals ] iii. do not always results from malice; nations, such as individuals, can find themselves locked into difficult positions, unable to back down. like individuals sounds great here in option A but it has ; For. Even if For is not there it doesn't workout. If For is not there options A looks like this. Crises in international diplomacy do not always result from malice; nations, like individuals, can find themselves locked into difficult positions, unable to back down. This is something like Like Vs Such as nations, like individuals [ it sounds like nations will not have individuals but it will have similar to individuals ] nations, such as individuals [ it sounds like nations will have individuals, etc.. i.e such as generally refers to an example] While trying to narrow down the correct answer, I hope, I am right in my explanation.
  13. Vivek, That was a nice post. You got a very good score with excellent quant score. I can understand your focus during verbal section. Why not a third attempt ( aiming to 750 + ) ?. Since you got 7 plus years of experience, Why not considering one year executive programmes in IIM's ( A,B,C and L ) ? Course fees is ~20L in ABC and ~15L in Lucknow. The date of application starts in AUG/SEP. I work in IBM too. Just think about it. -Dharan
