  1. I'm Canadian. I was working on a Princeton Review question that gave the size of a room in feet, but the tiles (used to cover the room) in inches. I have no idea as to how to convert feet into inches since we use the metric system in Canada. Are there certain units conversions that we should be aware of? The GRE seems to be very US-centric (especially for the Verbal as some of the terms use American connotations).
  2. I don't like the essay very much. I think its arguments are superficial. It's also not general enough. Using examples from current American news is not a good way to develop an argument. The question is very general but you've narrowed it down to just American politicans and actors in a worsening economy. For example, it's almost like if the question is about the morality of terrorism and you spend your entire essay on the 9/11 attacks. However, I'm just starting to practice for the GRE so my views on essays may differ from that of the markers.
  3. I'm planning to apply for graduate school in Jan. 2012. Should I take the current GRE or wait until the new one comes out. I'm afraid that the schools will only look at the new GRE... :(.
  4. Actually, I want to do a PhD in Business a lot more than Economics. However, I was afraid that Business programs are more selective and therefore perhaps Economics programs are more realistic. Should I do the RA before masters or RA after masters? Also, are there alternatives to MA in Economics?
  5. Do you think I will get into the weak MA programs (SFU, York, McGill)? Are they useful if I do indeed complete them with good grades?
  6. Traditionally, people who do a second bachelors degree do it in a distinctly different field. For example, a person who did a BA in sociology but is now interested in biology can probably do a BSc. However, I've already done some courses in economics so it would be difficult to do a BA in economics. If I do do it then my second GPA would still be tarnished.
  7. I've posted on the PhD business forum but I also want some opinions from this forum as I'm asking about some MA programs. http://www.www.urch.com/forums/phd-business/126900-non-traditional-applicant-please-help.html That was my post so perhaps you can find more details there. However, I'm in my third year and I have a 3.2 GPA. I did not get very good marks on my math courses (B-). I've became interested in doing a PhD in behavioural finance/economics, and experimental economics. I'm hoping to find a way to prove to the admission officers that I am capable of PhD-level work. However, the MA programs that I can get into based on my statistics are not designed to prepare one for academic work. However, I can't get into the rigourous MA programs (UBC, UT, Q, LSE, and etc.). I don't think I can do another BA since I'm going to do it in the same major (which most schools disallow). What do you think I should do now? My target is a Top 50 business or economics department.
  8. Historically, people tended to finish in 4 years. Most of my professors got their PhDs 4 years after graduating from their BA programs. But, I heard that in the past it was much easier to get placed into good programs. Now people need at least a few publications to get AP positions at the Top 10 schools.
  9. Hi, I am currently a Canadian student with a rather weak profile. I have posted in the PhD Business Forum and since I'm not allowed to post again here, I have received few replies. http://www.www.urch.com/forums/phd-business/126900-non-traditional-applicant-please-help.html I have currently a 3.2 GPA due to bouts of depression which is received suppressed since starting medication this year. I'm already in my third year of UG. I did not get very good marks on my math courses (B-). Which Canadian MA programs do you think would be the best for me? I think UBC, Queen's, and UT would be too difficult (to get in).
  10. Hi, I'm currently in the 3rd year of a Bachelors in Commerce from the University of Toronto. I have a fairly low GPA (3.2). I have had to deal with depression for the last three years. I have only started getting therapy and medication this year but they have been very helpful. I have had low scores on math courses (B-) due to those personal problems. I know that I want to become an academic and I have worked as a research assistant in the past. My target schools are in the Top-30 range for finance (behavioural finance), organizational behaviour (mostly individual decision making), and applied microeconomics. My current profile is not very conducive to being successfully admitted into those schools. Therefore, I'm hoping you guys can give me some tips on how to make my (eventual) application stronger. I have a few choices right now: Do a second major (in math or economics) at another school and try to get a better grade (along with more math courses). This is a powerful option but also very time-consuming. Do a MA in Economics from a lower-ranked school. I think I have the courses to get into those schools but I'm not sure about their effectiveness in boosting my application for PhD programs. #2 + a more rigorous MA (might be admitted after good results from #2). If I transfer now then I will have given 3 years on my current major but will still be 24 when I finally graduate. I don't have enough information so far to make that kind of judgement. I like Duke's two-year MA program but I'm not sure if I'll be admitted. However, if I transfer to another school then I get a BA in the same time that I'll the MA. Thanks
