  1. finally decided on UCLA. it'll be expensive, but worth it i think!
  2. quite the contrary. of all the top 20 departments situated in state schools, Maryland is probably the most financially sound, as evidenced partly by their ongoing hiring spree!

  8. Sorry for resurrecting an old thread: I have a few questions about funding at UCLA. It seems like all secondyear and above phd students are funded in some form or other, but I'm unsure as to whether this covers full tuition and living expenses, or just partially. Also, it does not seem like UCLA has a waitlist for funding (unlike UPenn for example). Is it common for admits without funding to obtain funding further on in the admission cycle when funded offers are turned down? Thanks!

  10. Oh! Well, congrats to you conger, and good luck to everyone who is still waiting.
  11. To be clearer, the 'rift' between Spence and Becker, and Card and Becker are on different issues. Asquare's description sums the Spence vs Becker situation very nicely. Card's deal is with the minimum wage (he claims that it does not create unemployment) versus Becker's pretty unshakable faith in the power of markets.
  12. Don't go the Card/Spence way! Human Capital by Gary Becker is what I'd recommend.
  13. i like this thread. i think the OP is being brutally frank which can only be helpful. i can imagine how tiresome it must be to read application after application which generally would not stand much chance in obtaining an admit anyway (mine included). im not surprised by most of the statements if the OP comes from a top 10 (maybe excluding Chicago).
  14. well no one has done that yet as far as i know...so why not real time? if the forum proves itself to be upward biased, or over optimistic, then presumably it implies that suggested schools to apply to are prob a tad too high as well, or vice versa.
  15. I agree with thesparky! It was discussed some in my own 'guess where' thread haha...
  16. got the berkeley email too..how nice of them to finally show signs of life :)
  17. hmm...it seems columbia hasn't received my GRE scores yet? that's surprising, given that i sent them in eons ago.
  18. i must say john, your post gave me a mini-heart attack! it brought this thread up to the top and for awhile i thought admission committees were all of sudden crazily fast this round haha...
  19. doesn't quite stop phd students from being bitter about it though :) i for one will freely admit that before i started reading ejmr, i had a much rosier picture of what post-phd life would be like.
  20. although to be sure, the bleakness of the jobmarket isn't too far off. a quick look at placements of even the top schools show that its difficult, to say the least, to remain in academia post-phd.
  21. i would be nervous with just those schools but then I'm paranoid maybe. no published papers isn't really a concern. do you have funding from your country? That would help. also, what do you mean (3.93 at other uni)?
  22. im thinking of just tallying the number of predicted 'admits' vs predicted 'rejects' and then presenting the true results. so something like: Columbia - 2A/3R - rejected which yields a 60% accuracy rating :) *ratings are probably specific to profiles i guess. not sure if there's a good way to aggregate accuracy ratings across profiles*
  23. quite so they are rather useless. however, it might be a good exercise in testing the predictive power of the forum as a whole. perhaps when we report results for this year, we should include the predicted results AND the true result :)
