  1. I agree with rsaylors, add to the profile don't just slam it. I know 4 people personally who are or attended NYU who did not make A 750 on the Quant section of the GRE and two have finished, one washed out and another is in her 5th year. Also, someone at Duke who made a 710 who I went to B-school with who finished last year. Some of the profiles are great, but it would seem to me that like all parts of academia, The PHD in business is subjective to overall qualifications. I know B-school is a different game, but the players are pretty much the same. I applied to 5 of Americas top and got into 3 with two years of work expierence and 91% Gmat score. A lot of the comments about don't shoot for this or that school seems to be filled with hate. It cost $75.00 on average to apply for PhD programs and if you are truley a scholar and look at the probability of getting in and not it comes to the apllication cost + time. You should be competitive, but to shut someone down is crazy. And like the lotto, you can"t win if you don't try. i can't change my undergraduate grades, but I could affect my test scores. There are only 5% on the verbal and 9% on the quanatitive section that tested better than me. So for an American student, I am probably in the top 3%. I like my chances, last but not least the mega million is derived by a randon selection of 6 numbers. If I hit it, JOF you will see how bad I want a PhD.
  2. I am looking at OB and Entrepreneurship. not smart enough for finance and Acct, lol! I like the qualitative stuff, with quanitative support! 780 is not a walk in the park for us non quant jocks! I worked hard to get that score. hopefully it merits me into a good program. Ivy is in my screen name, Im OK with a great program 2011!
  3. So you think I should pack my bags and not obtain a PhD? Are you serious?

  5. Damn, the politics are strong in trying to gain tenure, but hopefully I will not sit at a place for six years and pack my bags and move on. Hopefully i can see the writing on the wall, hence why more seasoned professionals do not enter a PhD program mid career. Secondly, I really believe the whole PhD format is going to change as budgets are cut and dollars are watched. For decades academia has had an open checkbook, I really believe as schools take on new faculty, they are going to be held more accountable for their picks. Thats just my insight. I have a friend on faculty that had an advisor at a mid 30 school and he recommended not to grant tenure, but the tenure chair over ruled! A Dean at a top 20 school in the California college system alluded to the fact that they are having to do more mentoring and advising to make sure that there PhD students are not washing out. Also, he showed a diagram that the school spends around $225K for every PhD it confers. Last but not least, I can only imagine schools who chose the wrong professor and let a guy/girl waiste space for six years. Academia is changing, I hope to be in the new influx.
  6. Thanks for the feedback! I've been pushed around alot so don't worry about hurting my feelings. How did you calculate the 66? Out @ 42 and tenured @ 48? Full @ 54? Give a couple years back, still 56. But thats twentyyears of scholary research? I plan to go teach @ a Liberal Arts school (Bucknell,Swarthmore, Moorehouse). Cant say that now, but I want to research, but really want to be on the front line of academia! And I have the unrelenting belief, that learning how to research is needed to challenge the status quo! Yes, i want to go to a top research institution and yes I want to give my life to scholary teaching first and scholary research secondly! And I know, that this is not typical, but this is my plan.
  7. Having academic references is the very difficult part of going back to school after a few years in industry. I have spent a lot of time on my undergraduate campus recruiting and mentoring students. My dean knows me exceptionally well and was one of my LOR for B-school. I never took classes from my Dean, but our Business school was small and the Dean had his thumb on the wild ones like myself. I know this is a bad word, but i want to teach, but I also want to teach and study with the brightest. While I was in B-school, I saw two indivisuals enter the program who lets say did not fo through the traditional application process. Just my .02!
  8. Second post, first time applying to PhD programs. Wanted to know if schools who find themselves without a rich application pool, do they recruit off of the ETS data sheet? Or would a school just close the admission process and accept 1 insted of three students? Thanks
  9. LOR from a prof a with high scholarly pubs from Business School and My Dean from Undergrad! I want to study the practicle side on Leadership "Entrepreneurship" and the ethical decisions that evolve from taking Risk! After being apart of several start ups, I have seen luck and leadership at its best and at its worst! In undergrad and bschool I did not take school as serious, but the one thing that I did notice was that mostly everyone who taught Entrepreneurship had never manage a real P&L. Maybe consulted, but never managed. Hence, I believe the Business Schools professors may not be researching real time work place problems. I know that my academic record does not show the pedigree of a PhD from stanford or MIT, but what about a couple of the other top programs?
  10. I applied to HBS on the 3rd of December and also applied to Cal Berk! I will finish my application to Rice,NYU and UCLA by tommorow!
  11. This is my first post and would like a little feedback on my chances of getting into a top PhD program focusing on OB! Undergrad 3.2 Small Liberal Arts University 1994 MBA from top 10 school made 2 c's in 1999 GRE:780 Quan 670 Verb 5 aw Working at satart up tech firms since undergrad! excluding 2 years in school for my mba! 37 years of age Columbia? should I try? Harvard? Academia is where i want to be. But more importantly, I want to study Leadership and Hourly vs. Management
