  1. The top 4 are unfortunately out of reach I believe. If you can get into SFU, Mac or U of A, or you should be able to "move up" somewhere to do a phd if you are a stellar grad student. Don't waste your time applying to McGill, they don't offer funding for most MA's and they're a wee bit overrated(unless you enjoy metric theory). Guelph and Carleton also have decent programs. That being said, try to go to place where your interest lie. Take as much real analysis as you can if you like Micro theory, even if it does hurt your brain.
  2. On the faculty I believe the Guelph profs or in general a bit more friendly. They have excellent econometrics and aggy econ. Carleton is moving up lately but I personally wouldn't recommend it although I know individuals from my school that received good placements upon completion of their MA with Carleton being in the capital and all. Guelph is a bit higher ranked and has been around a bit longer. Why not apply to both and then decide?
  3. I'm in the same boat for both schools. Don't hold your breathe if your expecting to get into the doctoral stream from U of T or expecting funding if you get into the regular stream. McGill hasn't sent anything out as far as I know and if your first round there it will probably be the end of this week or next. If you are asking for an extension I definitely wouldn't use the word better program. Maybe say you would like to the chance to explore all your options as this is an important decision?
