  1. So Northwestern (or Kellogg) doesn't have an "official" waitlist?
  2. Elliephant, thewhiterabbit, and chisquare.
  3. I just saw on GC that someone was accepted via phone today, with the comment "they have sent the acceptance letters last week". Are all the results supposed to be sent by now? I still haven't heard anything from Northwestern...
  4. Congratulations on the admission results! (and glad to see someone from Canada getting these nice results :)) Just curious, why did you choose to do a semester in China?
  5. I haven't heard anything from Northwestern yet. Isn't it weird? (I checked the website, no decision) I emailed them but no one replied. I'm fine with another rejection; I hope they didn't ignore my application.
  6. I guess they have sent all the admits. I got an email saying that 18 students are admitted this year.
  7. Thanks for your reply :) It seems that an empirical paper is not required but a course in economic history is?
  8. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: BSc Economics & Math from large Canadian university Undergrad GPA: 3.95 (not finished yet) Type of Grad: N/A Grad GPA: N/A GRE: 620V, 800Q, 4.5AW Math Courses: Calculus (A+), Advanced Calculus (A+), Linear Algebra II (A+), Nonlinear Optimization (A+), Real Analysis -- undergrad (A), Real Analysis -- grad (A+), Advanced ODE (A-), Concepts in Abstract Math (A), Intro Math Logic (A+); Prob & Stats I (A+), Prob & Stats II (B), Probability -- no measure theory (A+), Mathematical Stats (A+). (all undregrad except "grad real analysis") Econ Courses: Intro Econ (A), Intermediate Micro (A+), Intermediate Macro (A+), Advanced Micro -- game theory (A+), Advanced Macro (A), Econometrics I (A+), Econometrics II (A), Economic Analysis of Law (A+), Political Economy (in progress); graduate courses: PhD Micro Theory II -- game theory, contract theory (A), Advanced Micro Theory (in progress). Other Courses: 1st year bio + chem + physics (I wanted to study molecular biology), Italian language courses. Letters of Recommendation: 1 from a well-known prof who taught me graduate game theory and supervised a summer research project; 1 from a young prof who taught me intermediate micro and undergrad game theory; 1 from a law & econ prof who taught me economic analysis of law. Research Experience: summer research project in game theory --> uninteresting small paper. Teaching Experience: none. Research Interests: micro theory, political economy. SOP: talked about how I got interested in economics, in particular micro theory, what I learned from my courses and research, and my own interests (not very well-defined interests); didn't mention any specific faculty. Other: Note: the Canadian grading system is a bit different from the American one: here 90-100 ~ A+, 85-89 ~ A, 80-84 ~ A- etc., and 85-100 ~ 4.0 GPA, so it seems easier to get high GPA, but my friend told me the grades aren't inflated as much as in the States (which I don't know, but it is true that in my school, a large public school, they try to keep the course average low). RESULTS: Acceptances: Stanford, NYU, UPenn (waitlisted for funding), Wisconsin, UCSD (they didn't talk about funding), Toronto MA(doctoral), Toulouse M2. Waitlists: MIT. Rejections: Harvard, Princeton, Chicago, Yale, Berkeley. Pending: Northwestern (what happened to my application???) What would you have done differently? I wouldn't say doing sth. could get me into better schools (e.g. Harvard, MIT), but some things could certainly prepare me better for a PhD program, e.g. taking "analysis" instead of "calculus" courses, graduate probability, and more econ courses.
  9. That's true... I guess Stanford is preferred in the areas I'm interested in. You're in Stanford already? How do you like it there? Stanford is really enthusiastic to admitted students. They would put faculty and current students in contact with you. None of the other schools that admitted me has done so.
  10. Institution: Harvard University Program: Economics PhD Decision: Rejected Funding: N/A Notification date: 3/14/11 (sent on March 11) Notified through: mail Institution: UC San Diego Program: Economics PhD Decision: Accepted Funding: not mentioned (???) Notification date: 3/15/11 Notified through: email By the way ... what happened to my Northwestern application???
  11. Their numbers are 650-XXX-XXXX. One prof emailed me first and then called me, another one simply called me. It's Friday 5 p.m. there now; maybe you'll get calls next week.
  12. A prof from Stanford just called me. It seems that they are interested to know if I have "competing" offers ... but I really don't have any choice that can be compared with Stanford (NYU, UPenn etc.).
  13. Institution: Princeton Program: PhD Economics Decision: rejected Funding: N/A Notification date: 03/10/11 Notified through: email Comment: Congrats to the admits! I really like this school but they rejected me :( so I'll probably go to Stanford.
  14. April 8 and 9 (Fri and Sat). Anyone else going? This is likely to be the only flyout I will attend and I'm really looking forward to it (I don't expect to get in any school preferred to Stanford; for the less preferred ones, I probably won't go either because I have a conflict or because I have absolutely no interest). In fact a prof at Stanford just contact me! (they are not joking when they say "you will also be hearing from a member of our faculty within the next few weeks"!) This made me feel really good since I am from a big school that pays little attention to its students. By the way, I'm not sure if this is appropriate, but may I ask: would anyone (female) be interested in sharing a room for 2 nights with me (April 7 and 8) at a nearby hotel, say Cardinal? The school covers up to $700 of the cost but this is barely the price of a return air ticket from my city to there. (Please let me know if the last paragraph is inappropriate) Looking forward to see people there! :)

Probably going to Stanford. :)
