  1. agreed. the time where you could realistically say that a professor's main job was research is probably gone. teaching is now more important than ever. on the other hand, you have people like eric so who did not have an accounting degree or job... so what do i know?
  2. the range of possibilities is rather large. first, which school in the uk will you be attending? not all schools in the uk are equal. having many offers is not useful information here. the math courses you list should be sufficient. with the masters (assuming from a top tier uk university) you should be well positioned to get a place in the top 100. moving up the ranks will then be dependent largely on your letters. a gmat of 710 is sufficient if you have good letters. the only reason why i might advise you to get a higher gmat score is simply because you might not have fantastic letters, and because you are a non-native english speaker. the only other thing is to ensure that you actively work as an ra, preferably for faculty with a proven publication track record in the top 3-4 journals (jf, jfe, rfs, jfqa, maybe rf). people like these may not be easy to find in some uk schools - hence the question about which school you will be attending. try to see if you can take phd level classes in place of the masters program classes while you are doing your masters. ... but all of this information has been repeated on many other threads, though... but you have plenty of time.
  3. i can't help but feel i should reply in borat form. but no. programs do take in people who are close to their forties. my school has a few people scattered around in management, marketing, finance, and accounting who came in close to 40 - 37 and up to be specific. so pulling your leg i your friend am not.
  4. :wallbash: well played, hq, well played.
  5. one issue here is that the op is excessively sensitive. look - the requirements are simply that: requirements. they are generally necessary BUT insufficient conditions to getting into a phd program. just take it easy, and stop posting like every rejection, or that every interview offer that others got you did not get is an earth-shattering event. i do not want to generalise, but i suppose i might. i have spoken with quite a number of people who are interested in doing a phd in finance from my current institution, since... being who i am, the admissions committee chair likes to send the east asians who ask him about phd programs (big enough hint now?) to me. practically all of them think that as long as they tick the necessary requirements, they will get into a top program, but we know you need to show much more than that. further, hq is right on one point - most of these students have no idea why they want to get a phd, or what they are interested in. it is just another hefty piece of paper to swing around for them.
  6. ... i was under the impression that rejection is the norm. am i wrong, or have things changed since i got into a program? keep calm and carry on, for goodness' sakes.
  7. according to hedgequant, expect to see another 20 odd other finance candidates at the event.
  8. in my school, there are people who started a phd at 37+. no worries there.
  9. they already say where they get the number one ranking from - they specifically list the paper, for goodness' sakes. well, they did take in 8 people... but econjobrumors has it that 4-6 of them were terminated at the end of the first year, apparently, and that the department is in turmoil at the moment. how true this is, i do not know. some senior people are actively looking to move from what i know, and the fact that the ucla business school's attempt to privatise fell through isn't helping, either. as for the veracity of econjobrumors - well. it can be really accurate at times. heck, it had duchin moving to uw even before i knew about it.
  10. well. just wait until you see what rice gives for a stipend. heh.
  11. are they actually setting up an actual interview? seems like the procedure is different this year for some reason...
