  1. Thanks for the response gwe9766. Yes, I am a native english speaker, so I don't have that to contend with. The school that I went to is a teaching school through and through. As such, the faculty are not well known. As I said before, the school itself is well regarded among those who know of it, but therein lies the problem. One of my LOR writers got their PhD from one of the schools I applied to, but that was quite some time ago. That is about the extent of my connections. In regards to the GMAT, I have taken it twice (670 the first time). I am hesitant to take it a third time... not sure how the adcoms would view that. Did your GMAT score have the same breakdown between verbal and quant? When you applied, did you do anything to address your math background? If so, what did you say about it?
  2. Do you know of any (reputable) schools that offer some of these math classes online?
  3. Thanks for the response. You both confirmed what I had suspected. My thought regarding the MBA was to use some electives to pick up a couple math classes, but I don't know if I could take enough classes to be helpful. If you consider schools outside of the top 20 or so, what math classes should be considered as "required" for admission? Which courses would be most useful?
  4. Hey guys, I posted my profile a while back and got some good feedback, but I wanted to post again with more current info to get your thoughts. I applied to a handful of schools for this fall, but was rejected at all. Undergraduate: Small, private university in southeast (good reputation for those who know of it) GPA: 3.76/4.00 Work Experience: Back office of small asset management firm Courses: Math: Calculus 1 and 2, Linear Algebra Econ: Micro, Macro, International Econ GMAT: 690 Q: 44 (Ugh) V: 44 Research Experience: None Teaching Experience: None, aside from random tutoring jobs LOR: I can get good LOR's from former professors, but none that are well known. Research interest: Still working on narrowing this down, but I am interested in derivatives, alternative investments, and real estate. Target school: I don't have any particular need to go to a top school. It would be nice to crack the top 50, but I would be ok with middle of the pack. Any thoughts on schools to look at? I also wanted to get everyone's thoughts on the value of an MBA - not the degree itself, but the connections/opportunties it could provide. For example, I have the opportunity to get an MBA from a school with a good regional repuation for what would amount to a few thousand bucks a semester plus living expenses. I would likely have the opportunity to gain research experience, though not with anyone will-known. My other thought is to wait a year or two, apply to a better MBA (I think I could get in at a top 20, but would probably cost a lot more) and try to work with a professor there. My question is, if I am not aiming for a top program, how much does the reputation of the graduate school/reputation of professors impact chances of admission? What would you all recommend I do over the next few years to increase my chances next time around?
  5. Hey Everyone, This has probably been answered before, but I am curious as to your thoughts on getting an MBA from a US school vs. going abroad. For a little background on where I am coming from, I am from the US, recently graduated from a small private school in the southeast, and am currently working at a small investment management firm. I am starting to look at potential MBA programs, with the ultimate goal of landing a Wall St./Hedge Fund/PE type job. My GMAT and GPA are, at a minimum, in the ball park for a top ten MBA program in the US, and I have some pretty solid extracurricular activities. However, find the idea of going abroad for an MBA program, such as IESE or IE in Spain, to be very intriguing. My only concern is how an MBA from such a program would be viewed in the US. Any thoughts?
