Hey guys,
I posted my profile a while back and got some good feedback, but I wanted to post again with more current info to get your thoughts. I applied to a handful of schools for this fall, but was rejected at all.
Undergraduate: Small, private university in southeast (good reputation for those who know of it)
GPA: 3.76/4.00
Work Experience: Back office of small asset management firm
Courses:
Math: Calculus 1 and 2, Linear Algebra
Econ: Micro, Macro, International Econ
GMAT: 690
Q: 44 (Ugh)
V: 44
Research Experience: None
Teaching Experience: None, aside from random tutoring jobs
LOR: I can get good LOR's from former professors, but none that are well known.
Research interest: Still working on narrowing this down, but I am interested in derivatives, alternative investments, and real estate.
Target school: I don't have any particular need to go to a top school. It would be nice to crack the top 50, but I would be ok with middle of the pack. Any thoughts on schools to look at?
I also wanted to get everyone's thoughts on the value of an MBA - not the degree itself, but the connections/opportunties it could provide. For example, I have the opportunity to get an MBA from a school with a good regional repuation for what would amount to a few thousand bucks a semester plus living expenses. I would likely have the opportunity to gain research experience, though not with anyone will-known. My other thought is to wait a year or two, apply to a better MBA (I think I could get in at a top 20, but would probably cost a lot more) and try to work with a professor there.
My question is, if I am not aiming for a top program, how much does the reputation of the graduate school/reputation of professors impact chances of admission? What would you all recommend I do over the next few years to increase my chances next time around?
