  1. PM Canuckonomist, do you know where Queen's had placements recently?
  2. I've been trying to find the placement data for toronto's masters program and the lse eme but cant seem to find any. I always hear that eme places the best and that toronto is also pretty good but what kind of phd programs to graduates there get into?
  3. Thanks, I guess I'll try to fit it in. So for america is Duke's considered the best masters? And then theres the ones deveconomist said in europe and canada, also if i'm interested in development hows cornell's aem place for phd programs I cant seem to find any information on it? Thanks a lot guys
  4. Thats great to here! Will not having linear algebra be okay or should i take it and risk lowering my gpa as i already have a pretty full semester?
  5. Hi I'm a rising senior at duke interested in one year masters programs but sort of slacked off freshman/sophomore year when i took my core classes so am not sure if i have a shot at any good ones, could you rate my profile or give me advice? Econ gpa around 3.7 intro to econ class (B-) intermediate micro1(A-) intermediate micro 2 (b+) intermediate macro (A) econometrics (b+) grad level class on development (A minus) took 3 finance classes and got A's in all of them and another elective and got an A and thats it for econ Other relevant classes are multi variable calc and i got an A- and intro to stat/probability and got an A No large research right now but am going to start a thesis next year probably can get one good rec and one average one I havent taken the GRE yet but i am a pretty good standardized test taker and am pretty confident i'll do well So do i have a chance at any good ones? I'm specifically looking at the main canadian ones but am willing to try out europe. And is there anything i can do next semester to increase my chances?
  6. Anyone? Their website says that 36% of people continue for a phd
  7. Does anyone know how the placement is for masters students from cornell's dyson school? I feel like no one ever mentions it on these forums, is that just because its ARE and not pure econ?
  8. I placed into multivariable so I have that, then basic stat/probability, econometrics, and another stat class
  9. A masters in economics. Okay so it seems like Linear Algebra is important. Is it bad to take it 2nd semester senior year? If your other math grades are good, is it okay to take it then and just show them that you will have taken it before you enroll there even though they wont have a grade when you apply?
  10. Hi This question has probably already been asked a bunch but I couldnt find it when I searched. What math is needed to get into the top masters programs such as Duke, canada's big 4, and the good ones in europe? I'm assuming its less than the phds but is anything beyond multivariable calculus needed or recommended?
  11. Sorry if i am double posting but i just posted something and its not showing up so i'm not sure if its me or my computer messing up haha But thanks, I think I will add linear algebra next semester and I'll try to write a thesis. 2 more questions though, my school has two linear algebras one is more proof based, the other is more for engineers and is combined with differential equations. I'd prefer to take the 2nd one because I have had the professor before and liked him, but will this not look at good for schools? And also when you said realistic expectations for phd programs what range were you thinking? Thanks a lot
  12. Thank you. Do you think that working on an RA for a year would be needed to get into a masters or just a phd in econ ? And if its not needed for a masters do you think doing research and math classes in a masters program would be better?
  13. I am an econ major who just finished junior year. The past 3 years I've taken a very wide range of classes because I did not think I wanted to go to graduate school in economics. However, last semester I really enjoyed a developmental economics class and am seriously considering going to grad school in economics(probably an ARE school) or public policy, my top choice would be Berkeleys ARE, but top Pub pol programs and other are programs or regular econ programs are also options. My goal is to be able to consult in developing countries for NGOs and I would love to be able to do this while being a professor. My main problem is I have only taken math up to calc 3 (A minus) and one basic statsitcs/probability class (A) and one econometrics class (B+). In addition I have not done any substantial research. I have done two 20 page papers but neither are published and both are literature reviews, so not exactly groundbreaking research. Although I plan on writing a thesis next year So my question is do I have a shot at any PHD programs? Right now it seems like I do not have a shot at a top econ program, and I've been having difficulty finding admissions statistics for ARE or pub pol programs. And if I do not have a shot what are good masters programs to do, right now Im looking at UT, Duke, and cornell's dyson. Do I have a chance at getting in to these or any of the good UK ones? And are there other ones I should be looking at? My total gpa is a 3.7 from Duke and I have not taken the GRE yet, although I typically do well on standardized tests. Thanks a lot and let me know if theres anything else I need to add
