  1. Thanks OneArmedEconomist. One quick question. Just so happened to be reading another Macro article by Noahpinion between him Krugman, and Simeon Wren-Lewis.: Noahpinion: Macro: people vs. institutions Is there a such thing as conservative Macro vs. liberal Macro?: Economics, Good and Bad - NYTimes.com
  2. Okay, guys. Just did a quick check on everything recommended here. The online library of liberty was a little tough to navigate as far as trying to find a message board, comment log. or forum on there. I still have yet to check out Miles Kimball and David Andofalto. One quick question that I see is quickly becoming an apparent obstacle in my attempt to understand Macro-- terminology. should I start off with something like Khan academy-- instructional youtube videos-- to help me get the basic concepts and terms down-- and THEN proceed to the blogs in order to pick up both the language and conversation?
  3. thanks alot for all the recommendations, guys. Anything is better than the Peter Schiff videos I keep getting in my inbox. My first econ book handed to me was an Austrian one by Peter and Irwin Schiff, so naturally (and very unfortunately) the austrian perspective such as his and Ron Paul's were the first I really only understood. Ater reading Bill Mitchell's blog on Macro vs. Micro, it helped me to understand the flaw in what they were saying-- what he termed the "Aggregate Problem" I believe: Why the World hates economics | Bill Mitchell – billy blog However-- a lot still left me puzzled. Hopefully after a year of seriously studying and engaging in a community of others besides Peter Schiff's/Ron Paul's I will finally at least be able to keep up in regular conversation with everyday economists.
  4. Hi I'm finding I have a lot of questions on the different opposing perspectives in Economics (Keynes, Hayek, Friedman, etc.). While this is a great forum, I don't want to distract or go off-subject of my own inquiries that have nothing to do with the stated title (Obtaining a PHD) in this forum. Does anyone have in mind any other economics forums/discussions boards that would help? I tried a quick google search and nothing really came up. surely there has to be some place where economists -- or in my case "wannabe economists"-- can meet and discuss online?
  5. And also... if anyone can explain to me the difference between the different keynesian fields.. i would really appreciate it.
  6. Hi. I'm taking a microec course right now with the book being used by Tyler Cowen. Modern Principles: Microeconomics. I really enjoy the book but am finding it a bit too Hayek-ian?? (if that's the right word to use). I would love to read a micro text for a beginner econ student that would share views a bit more on par with Keynesian or neo--classic keynesian (don't know what the difference is). I find Paul Krugman's NYT column fascinating to read and would like reading material that could offer me a different way of looking at Econ and doesn't contrast as fiercely as some of Mr. Cowen's ideas do at already such a basic level.
  7. Hi. Thanks for the reply. No, I'm not at Uof chicago. I goofed up on that earlier thread. sorry for the confusion.
  8. Not to ignore your advice or anything blockRed, but say if i were to go on ahead and try to transfer out next year to an undergrad school out of state. Does this list of potential schools look practical to anyone here?: Univ. of Illinois Chicago Northern Illinois University CUNY Baruch Rutgers University SUNY Stonybrook Fordham University Any and all criticism welcomed!
  9. Yes You are correct. Perhaps I've used the wrong choice of words in the past. My first post concerning the MD degree-- was obviously while in pursuit of it while in undergrad. For the nursing-- technically i am enrolled into the program-- as the place I looked in does pending enrollment that guarantees you a spot. So technically i was enrolled, and technically really was not, as I was completing my Gen ed;s for the time until I was officially accepted. As you all know-- i bailed on that route too, and have recently decided econ full time now. Uofchicago-- was a post i made where I had no idea of what I was talking about. I had no idea that Transfers whom had over 2 years of college, had to compete for spots. I just thought anybody with the money for the place would be able to enter in Undergrad-- as this is almost the basic policy at the place that I go to. (either that or the requirements for attending such a college is so low that what typically is considered prerequisites for being a transfer, look like anything but). sorry for the confusion, any and everyone.
  10. St. Louis, MO. UMSL. I am looking into relocate either into the New York or Chicago area. Really economic rank isnt that much of a big deal as far as determing schools-- just as long as it actually has some sort of decent Economic program and/or competent Economics degree major. I figure-- as you said earlier-- do well on grades and pull up strong-- then worry about the good rank Econ programs when it comes to graduate school. WDYT? the only problem I'm having now is finding out what makes a school or program competent?
  11. No, not at UofChicago, but I would like to look into some 4-year universities in the area with decent Econ programs.
  12. lol. I agree. But there's no way to do really well on econ/math classes out-of-state and then go to the good MA program?
  13. Yeah... I was planning on waiting til my junior year came and then transferring-- at least by then I'll have at the very least by the end of Spring a 3.4 with all A's. Just wanted to know what types of schools I should look into transferring while on the way to do this. The only math course I've taken was College algebra-- and that was about a year ago. I took Trig last semester, and am getting more rusty on my algebra everday. I figure a couple of remedial Alg courses to review and a College Algebra, and straight into Calc 1 should do the trick... I have yet to take an Economics course.
  14. Is there anyway of finding out what is considered "lower rank", but high enough that with a good pulling up on the GPA, and excellent LOR's along with relevant work experience in the field-- you would be competitive for Graduate school?
