  1. Great thread... Read through it but probably missed a couple of things so this Q may have already been answered. If so, accept my apologies.. Is it generally possible to have your PhD application bumped down to an MA application (if rejected) at the top schools if you request it? Reason: I have an MA from my own country but I'd like the additional MA from a top school if they decide not to take me on as a PhD student instead of accepting a place at a less renowned institution. P.S. I would also be interested in hearing how SFU's MA students placed in PhD Programs.. :D
  2. Bumping my profile again guys.. Coming to the realization that I need more math, I feel a second MA would substantially boost my profile. I was considering either an MA from one of the big 4 Canadian schools (UBC, UofT, Queen's, UWO) or the M2 at TSE (Econometrics and Economic Theory). Which do you think would benefit me the most? Thanks, again..
  3. Ok, thanks for your advice everybody. :D
  4. This is true, I would imagine I have covered a lot of the more basic cal/algebra courses in high school... So do you think Top 30 is a realistic aim for me?
  5. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: BS Business and Mgmt – Econ Track. Large UK State School Undergrad GPA: 1st Class Honours ~ 3.7 – 4.0 Type of Grad: MA Economics >100 Econ Dept in UK Grad GPA: 1st Class Honours ~ 3.7 – 4.0 GRE: 800Q/650V/4.5AW Math Courses: UG: Maths for Finance and Econ (B), Mgmt Sc (A), Quantitative Methods (A). G: Quantitative Techniques (A). Econ Courses: UG: Intro Macro/Micro (B-), International Finance and Monetary Economics (B), Intro Econometrics (A). G: Intermediate Macro: (A), Intermediate Micro (A), Intermediate Econometrics (A), Advanced Macro (A), Advanced Micro (A), Advanced Econometrics (A), International Finance and Monetary Economics (B), Quantitative Techniques (A). Health and Labour Economics (A). Other Courses: Ones you would expect to find in a BBA, Marketing, Management etc. Letters of Recommendation: 2 Very good from decent profs, one normal from a big shot prof. (Haven’t got them yet, just assuming :/). Research Experience: Honours Undergrad Thesis (A), Honours MA Thesis (A), RA for a few months during MA. Teaching Experience: None. Research Interests: Macroeconomics, Econometrics, Emerging Market Economies.. SOP: I will write one, I’m sure. Other: Just wondering if anyone here reckons I could get the top 20 – 30… My undergrad grades were pretty average at times due to a combo of an exchange at a party school, having to take horrible artsy classes for the Business degree and being a little disillusioned by that, however I did very well in my MA so that should count for something? Also, with my lack of theoretical mathematics, do you think if I did another masters (maybe applied to the MSc EME at LSE or something similar or even did some UG courses) it would boost my profile significantly enough to try the top 10? Apologies if my estimates are way off! Thanks in advance.

  7. Hello everyone, First post from a long term browser... I have a Business major, GPA ca. 3.7.. However I have an econ minor. I also wrote an honours economics thesis, and have scored particularly highly in quantitative subjects e.g. Econometrics, Statistics, Calculus and Operations Research.. I'm considering doing a Masters in Economics (at one of the top 25% departments ranked by REPEC) and then applying for a PhD.. Do you think the masters will help offset my lack of an Econ undergrad major and what would you consider my chances are of a top 15 school PhD should I score well in the Masters? Thanks in advance.
