"Educational institutions should actively encourage their students to choose fields of study that will prepare them for lucrative careers"
An educational institution is synonym of a school, college or university. Here the argument given by the author is too generalized to debate on it. Also I do not agree to the point that Education institutions can really influence a student to pursue a subject which will help them to prepare for lucrative careers.
Early educational institutions such as elementary and secondary schools have no role to play in deciding the career of a student. The best educational assistance a student can get at this stage is getting acknowledged with the basic concepts of all disciplines like Science, Social Science, Mathematics, History etc. After completion of secondary education, when students go for higher studies, they choose the career path best suited their interests and capabilities. Some students who are very good at Mathematics may choose to go to an Engineering stream, a student good in science can opt to become a doctor or a student fascinated by arts may choose a topic of his interest like History,Political Science,Pshycology etc. When we say a lucrative career, it means the career a student has choose to earn more money with less hardships or a career which offers more money to a specially skilled individuals. E.g professions such as Doctor, Engineer, MBAs can be called as lucrative careers, A career/field which is evergreen and offers hand full of money lifelong. The role of an educational institution to guide a student to take such kind of career is very minimal. It is totally a student's choice or to some extent Parents or elder members of the family can influence a bit to guide a student take up a career which best suited his capabilities and can offer a bright future ahead.
Engineering is stream which offers diversified fields like chemical, mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Computer Science etc. With respect to time different engineering field had good career options based on industry demands. Once upon a time when Mechanical, Civil and Electrical fields were supposed to be the best and many meritorious students used to give these fields utmost importance. However in 21st century it is different. IT job is considered to be the most lucrative engineering job. So if an educational institution offers only computer science or encourage all engineering students to take up an IT career, than at some point of time there will be sure shortages of engineers in other field. Choosing career or job should be the choice of student than anyone else. Based on his strength a student should judiciously choose his path which can give him bright future and money. Also it is not always true that all students taking a lucrative career can be successful at the same rate. Earning more money does not necessarily mean that a person should be highly qualified.A person born to an affluent family irrespective of his education is blessed with wealth and capital which he can invest and become a successful business man. A person can earn money without much education also by sheer intelligence power. Lt. DhiruBhai Ambani was epitome of this ideology. Indian cricket master Sachin Tendulkar a undergraduate is one of the wealthiest person in India. A film star earn much more money than a contemporary dignified person from an esteemed institutes. Even though brand name of an educational institutions matters at initial stage, but ultimately the dynamism and capability of a person which earns him good money. E.g In India some esteemed organisations like NIT,IIT, IIM give job opportunity to the student by inviting big firm from all over the world to take the talents from their institutions. But not a single corporate firm blindly take a student without doing thorough assessment and interview of the candidate So students from good educational institutes compared to other universities get wider opportunity but what matters to prosper in that field and earn good money is on individual's performance.
In sum I would like to say that even though educational institution can encourage a student to choose a lucrative career, ultimately it is personal drive and hard work which would enable a person to earn good money. A lucrative career does not essentially earn lucrative money.
