  1. Hey thanks so much Indus and Phdhope, that is a HUGE comfort. :) Should have posted about this earlier and saved myself some sleepless hours.
  2. Hi everyone, I thought I'd send out a few emails to a few additional profs in my dream school (I have a few that I've already emailed) asking if they were accepting students. Unfortunately, I send an email with the wrong name (right person and email just wrong salutation). The prof replied back saying that he/she was accepting students and that he/she was glad that I read his/her work but his/her name wasn't XXX (the wrong name I typed out). I've emailed back an apology but I can't help but wonder if I just doomed my chances at this School?
  3. Hi hi, I'm not too sure about the 2nd question, I haven't had any problems with typing in powerprep I'm using a dell w/ dell keyboard. With regard to the 1st question I would highlight several pieces of evidence since evidence is a non-count noun. Hope that helps
  4. Hey that's a great score! I myself am having problems with the AWA section, what sort of strategies/ formats/ outlines/ books did you use? I'd be really grateful for any advice on that front would be really great. I can't seem to break the 400 word barrier for the issue essay. Thanks!
  5. Hey thanks Bigbangtheory, That seems to be the consensus from some of my profs; to highlight their interests/pubs and then how you fit into the picture.
  6. Hey thanks everyone, appreciate your comments. Just wondering how specific these experiments be? "I want to examine at least X people because I expect the effect size to be Y?" or " I want to see if people will X when exposed/primed to Y stimulus." Thanks, this thread has been really helpful!
  7. Hey Bigbangtheory, thanks for that. I was leaning towards the mix of schools with a business prof in there too. What you say is true I should check with them how many they are willing to provide a letter for.
  8. Hi I'd be so grateful if someone could help me out here. I've registered for the GRE some time back and now when I was looking through my old confirmation email, I realized that I've included my first and last name but not my ethnic name which appears on some of my certificates/ Identification. From what I've seen on the web ETS doesn't allow me to add that in or change my name. I thought about re-registering but (ouch$$$). Plus I think it'll be odd for adcoms to see my first and ethic name squished together without spaces... Any thoughts? And thank you so much!
  9. Hey thanks for that Indus, appreciate it! It's really good to know that my Australian gpa is sufficient, because it's hard to (from what I read) compare the two (compared to the US system). One quick question, I've over the last two years managed to convince a couple of people to write (pretty strong) LORs for me; 3 from my Australian institution (1 in psychology (assoc prof), 1 in psychiatry/epidemology(full prof), 1 in psychopharmacology(senior research fellow)); 1 from the top uni in SG (asst prof, psychopathology); 3 from my current workplace (1 quant psych (assoc prof), 1 biz MO prof (assoc prof)and 1 biz MO & S (assoc prof). My current conundrum is which LOR combination would be best? Would it be better to get 1 from each institution to show consistency of character? OR More from the biz side since I'm applying to a biz school? OR Just spread them out so I don't over work them? Many thanks!
  10. Hey thanks! I've looked at the link and it's a great recommendation. I've only looked at the psych department before under HSS, SDS looks like it's a considerable fit with my interests.
  11. Hey many thanks rthunder27! Really appreciate it. What you say about the my maths training is true. There really isn't a lot to show for it on paper. Would you think a high GRE quant or dragging out my old diploma (in chemical engineering) to show my mathematical background would help?
  12. Hi all, I have been reading around this forum and it really is godsend! I am new here but would really appreciate it if you guys would give me some feedback on my profile. Many thanks! PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, Bachelor of Arts Psychology, Bachelor of Arts (hons) in Psychology. From a group of 8 Australian (top 50 in the world) institution. Undergrad GPA: cgpa = 6.28/7, BSc Chem = 5.75/7, BA Psychology = 6.43/7, BA hons = 6.33/7 (should I covert these to a base of 4?) Grad GPA: NA GRE: Taking the new version in September (that’s another story in and of itself) but my scored practice (on the new power prep) before studying tells me I score an approximate: V: 590-690 Q: 750-800. Math Courses: no official courses taken but a lot of subjects that I took in chemistry like quantum chemistry requires a fair understanding of college math Statistics: 4 levels of stats, covering everything from t-tests, anova, ancovas, HLM, non-para tests to multivariate MR, DA, PCA, FA. Psychometrics covering stuff like IDI and ROC curves. For all courses I received a grade of at least a distinction (6/7). Econ Courses: NA Other Courses: A whole chunk of psychology courses. Including courses in I/O psychology which from I see is somewhat related to OB and MO (7/7) Research Experience: Spent a summer (3 months contract) in a government forensic psychology department examining potential predictors of recidivism in violent juvenile offenders; continued researching (pro bono) beyond my contract term after I returned to my studies overseas. One year honours project utilizing a randomized control trial to examine the effects of vitamin D supplementation on outcomes of executive function and mental health. The resultant paper is currently under-review at PLoS one. About 5 months (still ongoing) as a part-time psychology research assistant at the top university in Singapore, examining the relationship between personality, social cognition and psychopathology via cross-sectional and meta-analytical methods. As with the summer internship, I’m staying on after my contract because I want to see the end of the project. Currently, a research project officer (as of July this year) in two faculties (Business and Psychology) at another university (top 30 in the world for Business), developing a measure of career aspirations. The results are being written up for a presentation/ journal submission early next year. LOR: One tenured full professor from my honours year (well known in schizophrenia and epidemiology), one from an assistant professor from my work with psychopathology, one from a tenured associate professor (in MO who completed his PhD at UIUC in I/O psych) from my current employment. Most of should be pretty strong. Teaching Experience: NA Work Experience = 1 Years (2.5 years conscript military service) Publications: One under review from my honours year, one honours conference in which I received an award for being best speaker amongst about 150 speakers. Award/ recognitions = Best honours Conference presentation, 5 letters of commendation (Psychology), 5 Dean’s letter of commendation for high achievement (Science/Chemistry), International House letter of commendation for high academic performance, Overseas Certificate of Service for Singapore Armed Forces with highest possible grading for conduct, performance and disciple, 4 Temasek Polytechnic (Singapore) Media Releases Programs: competent in SPSS (PASW), vovici, e-prime, qualtrics and Microsoft office Research interest: I’m pretty flexible with my research interests, in that, with enough immersion in a topic I find myself easily growing to like the topic However, the one topic I’m really interested in is Power/Status/leadership. Both how being in a state of power/status can influence behaviours and cognitions of the individual, as well as how people perceive others in power. (Is this specific enough?:D) Institutions: Because of my research interest in power, I’ve (in part) only sought Universities that have faculty publishing along those lines. Stanford (OB), Northwestern (MO), NYU (MO), U of Michigan(MO), Columbia (M), Maryland (I/O psychology), U of Texas at Austin, UCLA, UC berkley, Yale, CMU, UCI, UIUC (I/O Psychology), northeastern (social psychology). Concerns: How my Australian GPA will be compared to the GPA system used in the US, especially my less than stellar 2nd upper (Magna Cum laude) honours grading. That my degree in chemistry may be viewed not as being diverse but as me being unsure about what I want to do. Quite a bit of my research experience is clinical psychology-ish in nature, though aspects of it like the research methodology, social cognition and personality should be applicable across domains. That I’m too top tier heavy in terms of schools because of my research focus. That my LORs are mostly from psychology, psychiatry/epidemiology with only one from a business school. The diversity of my LORs as well as limited time spent with each. Being an international student, I’m guessing I’m going to have to try to be cut above to show adcoms that I’m worth the time and opportunity. As I am, am I a cut enough for the institutions I’m interested in (Northwestern/Stanford)? Looking at past admits into OB and MO especially for my top three choices, my application pales in comparison. Thanks for taking the time to read through this lengthy post, hopefully it was not too convoluted. No in elenath hîlar nan hâd gîn!
