As far as education and the intelligence of a nation's students is concerned, The United States of America has lost its leading position in the world. Countries like China and Japan are producing students that far exceed American students in language, and especially math and science. At this point in time The United States needs to begin developing ways in which we can close the gap between our level of education and that of other counties. A major way I believe this can be done is though the creation of a national curriculum that all students in the country must follow until they reach college. By enacting such a policy I believe it will allow the governemnt to target resources to those areas in the country that need it most. It will level the playing field for students who wish to go on to college. And ultimetly it will create a smarter America.
Creating a a national curriculum will have many positive effects on the educational landscape of this country. First what a a national curriculum means is that all primary and secondary schools in the country will teach the same syllibus and list of topics to all of their students. One major benifit to having a system such as this is that it standardizes all of the schools across the country and therefor allows the government a way to analyze and compare schools. This is important because by being able to have a way to accuratly compare schools through the use of standardize tests, the governmet would be able to monitor which areas of the country need more funding than others. More funding to the schools means that they will be better equipt to teach the students, causing an increase in test scores.
As I just metioned a postivie effect of a national curriculum is that areas of the country who ed exta assistancewill be able to get extra needed funding. This will create another benifit of the a national curriculum, which is that it will create an even playing-field for those who wish to enter college. No longer will a person's location dictate how far their education can go. A lower socio-economic area such as parts of Detroit, New York City and New Orlieans will be giving reaources and put to the same standards as schools in high socio-economic areas. By allowing all students, no matter their location and financial situation access to the same education, it will allow more students who otherwise wouldn't have the ability to do so, a fair shot at getting into college. And with more students getting into college it will improve the level of intelligence of the country as a whole.
The last benifit I see to enacting a a national curriculum is that by having more studnets enter college and even just having more students leaning the important fundementals of politics, economics, english, history, science, ect the country will become more stable an intelligent as a whole. By allowing all students the oppertunity to learn a vast curriculm, I believe it will create a new generation of educated voters, which will immencly improve the country. For example, I believe it is the imformed voter who is best able to exercise their political power. Had more voters in the last few months been better educated in economic matters I believe more pressure could have been put on the government to reach a conclusion to the debt ceiling crisis sooner. In many polls taken a few months ago, many people believed it was a good idea to just let America defult and gain what they believed to be a "fresh start". I can admit that I was one of those people, until I educated myself on what defult would actually mean and how it would have not only detrimental effects to the American economy but also to the worl's economy as well. I believe that if all Americans were adiquelty educated than our political climate would be less pandering and more actions. Because of a a national curriculum the people would be better equipt to understand what's going on in their own country.
Their are many positive effects of a a national curriculum. The only negative effect that I can imagine, is in the creation of the national curriculum itself. Many debates will rage over what exactly should be in the curriculum. For example I forsee that the war between evolution and creationism in schools will again surface. However I believe that this might be a good thing, creating a new dialouge to better understand these issues. And really I believe that more good than harm will come from a national curriculum, a few arguments are by far eclipsed by the educational benifits of this system. Untimently I believe a national curriculum will allow the governemnt to target resources to those areas in the country that need it most. It will level the playing field for students who wish to go on to college. All of the American people will be subjected to a better standard of education, creating a smarter country as a whole, who is better able to compete in the global arena.
