  1. I really need to stop looking at this website, maybe I'm being pessimistic but seeing people get into better schools than I applied to while I've already been rejected to my top two choices is starting to get to me. It also doesn't help that I've seen people already accepted into 3 other schools I haven't heard from yet...
  2. Well the website says they make rolling admission decisions beginning in March, so I'll choose to believe that is what they'll do...
  3. And for those of us that applied to a public school, does anyone know if being an in-state applicant affects admission? I know that is certainly the case for undergrad but I am not sure for PHD
  4. I've been wondering, what exactly are flyouts? Does the university pay for students to fly to the school to visit or is it more of a fancy open house?
  5. I think it is a little too early, UVA sent out an email to applicants still under consideration that specifically told applicants not to call or email the department to check application status. The pointed out that it slows down the process and that everyone should be reassured that they will be contacted when a change to their application status is made and that any anxious students can check their status online. Personally I have a feeling that they only started getting so many calls after people read on here that there had been some rejections...
  6. Personally, I agree with the sentiment that it is less important where your references went than how well they know you. For instance in my opinion the first and most obvious choice would be whichever professor you worked most closely with on research. After that I think it is important that any professor who you have not researched with be someone who taught a rigorous class (or two) that you did well in. I alsp think it is more important to focus on developing good relationships with your professors than how famous they are, since you have control over the former.
  7. If you are concerned about employment with the US federal government they do accept degrees from other countries as fulfilling academic requirements for various positions. However you would have to prove the equivalency of the degree through a third party since the US Department of Education does not accredit overseas institutions.
  8. South Carolina has one called a Maymester, I believe Old Dominion University has one too
  9. South Carolina offers real analysis, differential equations, probability theory etc. in the summer
  10. I feel like this thread could be useful to those of us without the best of records. What are some schools, say in the top 25, that seem to accept students without top records more often than you'd think. By students without top records, I'm thinking of the various types of students that have solid grades (3.4-3.6), or maybe have a great overall record with one glaring weakness, and even the students that went to schools without the best of resources so they won't have research experience or famous reccommenders . I think it would also be interesting to suggest schools that seem to take more chances on applicants in certain fields.
  11. Hello one and all, I'm currently in my senior year and working on my applications to doctoral programs in economics and I am starting to get this lingering feeling that a PHD in econ may not be the best route for me. I really do love the study of economics, but as far as my personal career goals I'm not particularly interested in a career in academia. My dream career would be to work my way up in government so that I get to the point where I get to create and implement policy. Now I'm starting to question whether or not pursuing a PHD is the right move for someone who has my career goals. Does anyone have some input as to whether I would be better off going after some other degree like a MPA, MBA or JD?
  12. Hello everyone, I am going into my senior year this fall and I will be applying to economics PHD programs. I've read a few posts before where people ask for input on their credentials and I am interested into getting some feedback. Here's what I have. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Rising Senior, BA Economics and Political Science 3.5 overall, 3.75 in econ from a big state university Undergrad GPA: 3.505/4.0 Type of Grad: N/A Grad GPA: N/A GRE: 800Q Math Courses: Calc I-A, Calc 2-B, Calc 3-B, will take Linear Algebra, Probability Theory, Statistics, and Real Analysis in the fall and spring Econ Courses (grad-level): N/A Econ Courses (undergrad-level): I’ve got a 3.75 overall and took all of the hard classes. Letters of Recommendation: Haven’t decided which professors they’ll come from Research Experience: Currently performing university sponsored undergraduate research with a goal of submitting it for publication Teaching Experience: Research Interests: Public Economics is the main interest right now but I expect that may change after taking a few graduate courses Any suggestions on a range of schools where this is competitive?
