  1. I may not agree with Catrina. (congrats on your this round of admission, BTW!) I don't think OP aimed too low. Top 30s schools are hard to break into, especially when OP has no research experience and not from prestigious undergrad. I say that because OP's background is similar to mine in many ways, and similar to a few of people I know, assuming American University Bulgaria is equivalent to some non top liberal arts. Lack of research experiences may or may not harm you in admission, but it will almost certainly make you worse off in grad level studies and early stage research. For example, do you really know what kind of research is done in macro these days and what are your interests? You will need to spend more time to signal your ability as a potential researcher, not just a student. On another note. I've heard that eastern european countries have a much better math education, so your math background will be looked at favorably, I assume.
  2. I think my profile and admission result is relevant to your situation. Take a look at my roll call post last year(if you can find them), and feel free to PM. For lower ranked schools, it might vary a lot in terms of the strength of the economics department, sometimes even one faculty can make a lot of differences.
  3. Second this. I can't tell you how liberal arts prepared me for grad school since I haven't start yet. But to give you some perspectives on the admission, I also went to small, lower ranked liberal arts college, out of financial reasons as well. I will be attending UNC this fall, a decently ranked program which suits my interests well. I did applied many top 20 schools and it was a shut-out, so this is some thing to think about. You can probably look into my post for my detailed profile.
  4. It's interesting to notice that male have much less attachment to their germ cells. Is this difference justifiable by the magnitude of quantity of which are produced? Or they are genetically hard-wired/selected to care less about it. That being said, yea, ethics are troublesome.
  5. I am going to distract the conversation and throw in some new ideas. A year ago I already foresaw the financial difficulties I would face in grad school, hence came up with a perfect plan - I will sell my egg. I thought that being in a decent school with a bad *** title "economist" may make my egg marketable in some niche market. I even workout very hard to increase my physical fitness, to compensate my lack of artistic talent and those stuff. I admit that this idea is not entirely original. The Big Bang theory started with the episode that those nerds went sell their sperm.
  6. Stay safe, Integral! I'll start PM people this weekend. Glad we got so many responses!
  7. It is some member's message which made me realize that I want to keep you guys as friends. I likely will not visit this place very often after everything are set. But I appreciate the help, the company, the good vibe and the camaraderie from this forum. I want to keep you guys as my real friend. So either like this post, comment below, PM me, or do whatever to signal your similar intentions. I will PM you my contact info(unless you are italos), so hopefully someday down the road we can grab a drink and talk about economics, and other stuff.
  8. Watch some coursera course on topics not very economics and math related. Meet people, read books, spend time with family try to use some family contacts to let me visit places, businesses that I might be interested in how do they function. If budget allows and time permits, travel to an exotic location swim, workout, get a good tan Review my analysis, read one or two chapters of topology self study some econometrics, R, Python Not going to bring mas collel home, but I may read some of the mas collel notes if I am really bored. All right this is an over ambitious list. Have a good summer!
  9. Have you heard from IU's funding yet? I heard several people are waitlisted for funding and being promised with "a large chance of receive funding" so I doubt the validity of their promise.
  10. following Kalyea here, PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: 50-100 liberal arts college Undergrad GPA: 3.8 GRE: equivalent to 670V+800Q Math Courses: Analysis 1&2 (A), Abstract Algebra 1(Group theory) (A), Abstract Algebra 2(Ring and Field) (A-), Differential Equations A, Math Modeling A, Probability A, Statistics B, Intro to Proof A, Linear Algebra A, Calculus A Econ Courses: International Econ Seminar (A), Industrial Organization(A), Labor econ seminar(), Intermediate Micro(A -), Intermediate Macro(A) Other Courses: Many, but irrelevant to Econ Phd. Letters of Recommendation: One Math Professor, two Econ Professors. Should be strong and personalized (like many other liberal arts applicants), but not from big names. Research Experience: One research paper finished and submit as writing sample, supervisor will also comment on it. One math modeling competition model - in progress. One letter writer will comment on it. A few cute little class projects that I will talk about in my SOP when necessary. Teaching Experience: Tutoring experience (econ & math, about 5-7 hours per week for 2 years) Research Interests: Applied micro Concerns: low rank liberal arts college; no graduate level course; I have absolutely taken all the hard classes and easily got good grades, so what? any top school undergraduate student come over here and he/she can do the same. Admission people know that. Lack of empirical research experience. Our college does not have a consistent record of sending students to econ Ph.D program(but we send students to top science programs). Rejects: Chicago, Stanford, Michigan, Brown, Caltech, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Maryland , UWashington Interview: CUNY Offer: UNC-Chapel Hill ($), Indiana($) , UIC($) Admission(?): UT-Austin (put on waitlist. After I ask, they said that they don't have funding, but they'd love to have me) Attending: UNC what would I have done differently: 1.) Better use of my first two summers: I didn't do anything academic related in the first two summers. Looking back, I'd be better off if I had set my goal earlier and do something relevant those two summers. 2) Research: I have very very limited economics research experiences, and I think it's rare on this forum. I didn't know how to use Stata until the last semester my senior year! Lack of research experience made me hesitate to apply for full-time RA opportunities, which should be a good profile booster. 3) technical skills: such as statistical software, coding skills. I didn't learn them until the last semester senior year - should I acquired these skills earlier, I'd be applying for RAs. 4) Choosing schools: I probably shouldn't have applied those small, prestigious, private programs(Brown, JHU, Caltech) - I have no contacts there, nor do my letter writers. Coming from an unknown school, it doesn't surprise me that they won't take risk on me when their own entering class is very small and can't therefore afford many "risky students". I would apply more larger programs on a similar rank. Comment: Despite the long list of things I wish I have done, I am happy with my results. I am very excited to join UNC. I also feel grateful for all the help I received on this forum. Keep the good vibe, team TM. I hope we don't grow into the kind of horrible people on ejmr.

    F-1 Visa

I really don't think they care. As long as your program is legit - which it certainly is- the visa is not something to worry about. I have done it a couple of times, and everytime they just check if I go to a legit school and I have enough money for fund myself. That's all.

I can't say much about these two program and which one will be better for you. But when I visit chapel hill and saw pretty much the whole town were in some sort of work-out gear, and tons of people running on the street, rejecting Indiana became a no-brainer for me. Have you visited? You could consider do so. Talking to the students are always helpful.

Chuisle, I remember I said I want to be your cross fit training buddies. And guess what, I will just be 10 miles down the road at Chapel Hill!
  14. May I ask what do you do receipts for? for tax purposes, business or what? For personal finance and planning..well I myself do a bad job, but there is a tool I like it - it's an app called Mint. It connects with your back account and keep track of your expenses automatically. I usually go over my expenses every week or so, looking at each item, and categorize them. I figured it will be very helpful in grad school, when i will not longer getting support from my family member and have to live a more thrifty life.
  15. Interesting enough, I don't think I have encountered that many inappropriate yoga pants wearing women. Maybe because I have a rather high threshold for excitation, combined with the fact that there are plenty of outfits that are way worse than yoga pants. But speaking seriously. My college recently hired a young female handling some teaching/tutoring task. She is tiny. Indeed there is nothing she can do. But she dresses like a middle school girl, and act like one. When her six feet male colleagues talks to her I feel like she is being looked as a 13 year old girl, with all the fatherly look on her. I certainly would not want that fatherly/matherly look when I am discussing academics.
  16. If you don't have to archive a huge amount of document, I think a cell phone app will be sufficient.
  17. Thanks for the advice. I do noticed that some junior faculty at my school using this trick. But I suspect that I'd have to take a huge amount of testosterone to do the trick. And as much as I would like the testosterone to help me packing up some muscles, I am not sure I want to become more aggressive and/or deal with other hormone-related effect and deal with the whole gender switching documents business.
  18. I'd be worry about it but I am standing on the other end. I am fresh out of college, and i look younger than I actually am. I even get carded when taking public transportation, which is frustrating. I am worried that my look will make my job search more difficult.
  19. I keep seeing people saying that this program is rising, that program is under-ranked, etc. As much as I want to agree with this, it is just impossible to have every program to be under-ranked.
  20. Good for them! They already published a lot in Brasil. It doesn't surprise me that they got the government's support. Speaking of which, I know Brasil has been investing a lot in sending their students overseas.
  21. yea that was a typo. I think everyone would just look happier than usual on a friday afternoon. As emotion is contagious, subconsciously, it will affect your impression to them.
  22. I wouldn't think so. The only reason I only know about micro is that I clearly told them I am interested in micro, and only requested to meet with micro professor and students. I know their macro students got really good placement.
  23. I visited during spring break, on a not-so-good-weather day. Bloomington looks so quite to the point that I didn't think I would like my life there. The two Ph.D students who accompanied me was bright and nice, indeed. My chat with Frank Page was pleasant and informative. Indiana is a great place for people who are interested in networks. They are joining people from sociology, economics, computer sciences, etc to build a network studies center - which according to Professor Page, will start in the next year or two.
  24. Hi Demand side, could you reveal how do you evaluate the quality of the undergraduate institute?
