i agree that it's not ideal to be away from all the resources. but if it happened so that you didn't get into any program near where you need to be, i think that there are definitely ways to make it happen. indeed, i see people in my program who are away during years 3-5 because of personal reasons (relationships, family issues, etc) and they seem to manage to work it out. they tend to come into the office every other week or so to check in with their advisors and attend seminars.
