  1. Thanks for your advice. Yeah, I agree with you that, and I should be realistic. I'd much more focus on lower ranked school because it's my last academic career decision in my life.
  2. Thanks for your helpful comment. Yes, my GRE score is still alive. I took it in 2011. My GPA is not great due to many B's, but I have enough grades of A too, especially in math and micro. I believe my recommendation would be strong. I showed a quite good performance during the classes. I just slipped during the macro qual exam with a bad luck. Even one macro professor wanted me to pass the exam (the other macro professor failed me...) and promised me to help my application. But all of professors are from econ. So they would not tell where I should apply.
  3. Hello, I am aiming to get accepted into a top 50 PhD program, and I was wondering what my chances were. Test Scores (GRE): V720/800, Q 800/800 AWA 3.0/6.0 Undegrad GPA: 3.92/4.00 (Econ / Applied Math), 1 out of 136 Graduate GPA: 3.5x (Econ Master) / 3.4 (Econ PhD, ranked 30-40 according to US News) Research Experience: Term papers, one is about patent issues using game theoretic model, and the other is about moral hazard problem in a healthcare market via both theoretical and empirical approach. Teaching Experience: TA for Theory of Investment (Finance) , GA for Financial Management, Intermediate Microeconomics Letter of Recommendations : one from microeconomic theorist, one from econometrician, one from macroeconomist or structural econometic modeller on environmental/urban issues. All are professors at my currnet department. Work Experience: Military Service in my country Concentration Applying to: Marketing - Quant - more emphasis on empirical industrial organization (IO), but I can do IO/Game theoretical modelling on marketing topics Number of programs planned to apply to: 12 Dream Schools: Rochester, Yale, Toronto What made you want to pursue a PhD: I want to change my field from Econ to Marketing. This is because I currently failed macroeconomics exam in my econ department, passed micro qaul exam though, and my current school does not have IO researchers. I consider marketing quant research as an application of IO/Game Theory. Any additional specific questions you may have: I have quite strong background in microeconomics, industrial organization , gametheory, econometrics, statistics, and mathematics. But one failure in macro econ qual exam would make me low potential researcher in marketing, though macroeconomics is far away from marketing.
  4. Thanks for the reply. I know some guys who failed the qual at econ phd program, which is ranked around 25, ended up 50-60 ranked program. I'd be satisfied if I get an offer like that guy. This time I just failed at the margin. One of the qual exam committees wanted me to pass the exam, but the other member didn't allow for me to pass. Anyway I believe I can get at least not bad recommendation letters from professors at my current program. If I get such recommendation letters, can I start econ phd again with funding around 40-60 ranked school?
  5. Thanks for the comment. I felt IO approach to healthcare markets is interesting for me when I wrote term papers on those field courses in my master years. So I think it's practical for me to choose it as my research areas at this time in order to prepare for the applications. Plus my current school doesn't have a faculty on those area, so that I had no opportunity to work on them.
  6. I passed micro in the first attempt, but unfortunately I failed on macro in both attempts.... So I have to leave the program with a master degree. Then I have two master degree in economics, and it doesn't look good. To continue to do phd, I was searching for business phd programs, for example, international business, marketing quant, and strategy. But I'm not familiar with those academic research literature and jargon, and their research environment. After searching for these business things, I found that I still wanna stick to do research in economics, especially for health and io, my former research interest was in applied theory though. So I'll re-apply econ phd programs and potentially public policy or health policy phd. programs for Fall 2016. I really appreciate your comments in advance. Any suggestion?
  7. I haven't heard any news from the following 8 schools: NYU, Caltech, Maryland, Cornell, Boston College (implicitly rejected); Michigan State, Vanderbilt, and U of Iowa (May I be in the 2nd round?). What do you guys think about this pending?
  8. Is there anyone heard from U of Iowa?
  9. Is there anyone who will attend ASU flyout? It's actually on 3/28.
  10. Is there anyone who will attend the ASU campus visit?
  11. Hello, NBZ. Thanks for many helpful post here! Now I want to ask you about ASU interview. Did you have an interview with ASU before getting an admission from ASU? I haven't heard any interview request from ASU yet.
  12. Brown econ admission is so early this year. Is there any international student who got admission from Brown?
  13. It seems to me that Ohio State already finished their first round admission decision. So I guess that pending is likely to mean either waiting list or rejection.
