  1. Sorry I haven't checked back for a while since I thought this thread was dead. Thanks for all of the responses. For the record, my Math Stats 1 was probability theory. As for Real Analysis 2, I think I am going to take Humanomics advice and focus on my research, and my work while improving relationships with old professors. Hopefully the RA2 doesn't bite me in the ***. At this point let the cards fall where they may or que sera sera or whatever.
  2. to2012, thanks so much for your response. I firmly fall into the second group of people you described. And I will say it is somewhat of a relief to know there are others in this category. I truly am jealous of those who enjoy the subject enough dive into the minutia. Unfortunately I am just don't find it interesting enough. I am primarily interested in applied micro and am shooting for programs ranked 20-50. So with that in mind and what I said in the previous paragraph, I believe your advice would be to not bother taking analysis two, which is precisely the type of advice I was looking for. Thank you. I would greatly appreciate the opinions and recommendations of others.
  3. So I just finished Analysis 1 with an A. The course is titled Intro Analysis 1. We used Intro to Real Analysis by Bartle and Sherbert. We covered real numbers, sequences and series, limits, and continuous functions. Intro Analysis 2 covers differentiation, Riemann integrals, sequences and series of functions, infinite series, and improper integrals. I realize we didn't cover as much as other anlaysis classes do, but I got a firm understanding of the basics. Basically I don't want to take RA 2 because I will be very busy in the fall (working, taking Diff Eq, independent research, planning a wedding, applying to econ phd) and the professor teaching analysis 2 has a reputation for not giving A's. Based on this, and the amount of work I put into analysis 1 this semester (I am not a natural at analysis), I think there is a real possibility I get lower than an A-. How much will not having Intro Analysis 2 on my transcript hurt my profile? PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Top 70 school. Undergrad GPA: 3.64 Type of Grad: Math courses taken at Top 60 school. 4. This makes me nervous because my profile is definitely weaker than yours. Any ideas why you got shut out? What do you plan on doing differently next year?
  5. From doing a little research on this forum it does appear that my RA I class did not cover as much as others. The class is titled Intro to Analysis so that might explain it. Do Adcoms ask what was covered? I am interested in doing applied micro so long term I can't imagine more analysis helping me. How important are differentiation, Riemann integrals, sequences and series of functions, infinite series, and improper integrals for passing prelims?
  6. Any recommendations on what classes to take in the fall. I am a non-degree student so I am not required to take any classes. I think I have all the classes that are absolutely necessary. Below is what I have taken. Thinking of maybe taking an intro to programming, data analysis, or applied linear regression. Math Courses: Calc I/II/III A,A,A Business Stat A, Math Stat I A-, Math Stat II A, Linear Algebra B+, Intro to Proofs A-, RA I TBD, Diff Eq TBD Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Intro to Micro B, Intro to Macro C, International Trade B, Inter Micro A, Inter Macro A, Labor Economics A, Behavioral Economics A, Econometrics I A, Game Theory A, Money and Banking B, Economics of Tax B, Industrial Org A
  7. Hi Guys, I am finishing up RA 1 this semester. Depending on how the final goes, best case I will have an A, worst case a B+. We used Intro to Real Analysis by Bartle and Sherbert. We covered real numbers, sequences and series, limits, and continuous functions. RA 2 covers differentiation, Riemann integrals, sequences and series of functions, infinite series, and improper integrals. Any reason to take RA 2? I'm taking classes as a non-degree student as I graduated (without enough math) in 2009. I'll be working part time in the fall, taking Diff Eq and finishing a research project. For those reasons and more I would rather not take RA 2. Below is my profile. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Top 70 school. Undergrad GPA: 3.64 Type of Grad: Math courses taken at Top 60 school. Grad GPA: 3.68 GRE: Haven’t Taken Math Courses: Calc I/II/III A,A,A Business Stat A, Math Stat I A-, Math Stat II A, Linear Algebra B+, Intro to Proofs A-, RA I-TBD Econ Courses (grad-level): Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Intro to Micro B, Intro to Macro C, International Trade B, Inter Micro A, Inter Macro A, Labor Economics A, Behavioral Economics A, Econometrics I A, Game Theory A, Money and Banking B, Economics of Tax B, Industrial Org A Other Courses: Finance and Accounting Letters of Recommendation: 1 Solid Letter from Thesis Advisor, 2 form letters Research Experience: Ongoing Thesis Teaching Experience: None Research Interests: Applied Microeconomics SOP: Concerns: Grades, letters Other: 3 years working in various corporate positions not related to economics. 8. I think the WB/IMF placements of GMU, GWU are a bit skewed upward since at least some of their students are already employed by the WB/IMF and are pursuing a PhD part time.
  9. Hi Guys, I took the first class of an undergraduate econometrics sequence four years ago and really do not remember much of it. I need/want to brush up on my econometrics and would like to take a class but feel like it is a waste to retake econometrics 1. My school offers econometrics 2 which uses Wooldridge Introductory Econmetrics and covers time series data, models for panel data, multiple-equation models. Can anyone tell me how difficult these subject are and if it is a bad idea to jump into them without a strong econometric foundation.
  10. This is exactly the problem. Material doesn't seem too bad but the amount of homework is brutal.
  11. Hi Guys, Last semester I informally audited an undergraduate intermediate micro class (at a top 40 econ department) while taking math classes. When I say I informally audited it, I mean I sat in on the classes, completed the homeworks on my own, participated in class discussions, but did not turn anything in or take any exams. I did this really just to refresh my econ foundation since I have been in the corporate world for 3 years. Anyway, I think I made a good impression on the professor. Thoughts on asking him for an LOR? Would an ad committee frown upon this type of letter?
  12. This semester I am taking math stats, intro to real analysis, diff eq and finishing my thesis. I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed and don't want to risk a bad grade in real analysis so I am considering dropping differential equations. I plan on applying next fall. I and can take diff eq next fall yet risk not having it on my transcript. I have read on here that diff eq doesn't matter but then I see that some schools specifically say you should have it. Should I drop it and take it next fall?
  13. So I am writing an undergraduate thesis to be completed in May. My problem is that I tend to neglect it to do my work for my other classes. It's not that I don't enjoy doing the research but I tend to set aside much more time to work on the homework due next week or the test coming up. Basically it seems that there is always something more urgent. Part of the problem is that I am doing this as kind of an independent study thing so there is no due date for a thesis proposal or literature review. The only thing due is the thesis. I realize that in graduate school there are also very few deadlines for the dissertation so I want to develop some good habits now. Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions on how to combat it?
  14. I need to send this thread to my friends and family who keep asking me why I am taking undergrad math classes in order to pursue a PhD in economics.
