  1. Sorry to respond late but here is my info Age:23 GMAT: 720 awa 6.0 GPA 3.7 BS Economics (Mindor: Statistics , Concentration: Finance) well my situation is that the amount of "time based" WE is low- 2 yrs, but i have been involved in a couple of non profits and did some consultancy work pro bono on the side with a NGO, for immigrants. i think more than nethign they r looking for a cohesive sales pitch, they wanna see your ability having been proven and they wanna see if you can market your story well thats about all i can think of.
  2. Hi guys its been a while since i have been here but just wanted to drop a line informing you guys that i just got into the Full Time program at the University of Chicago's Graduate School of Business. Thanks to everyone for their help while i prepared for my GMAT and the advice on the applications provided here was very benificial. Feel free to contact me if i could be of assistance to anyone. R A bit of info: Age 23 BS in Economics 2 years work experience
  3. Hey guys i just wanted to know what y'all think i should do I took my GMAT got a 720 but i have only 2 year work ex (by the time i am ready to go to B school) I have done tons in Undergrad, even had my senior thesis approved for publication in a top economic journal (Labor Review) am working at a well reputed place (IMF) on the research assistanship program. My GPA was good too 3.76 But i am a little concerned because i dont know what these guys at H/W/S/Columbia are looking for from candidates who are on the lower end of the work ex scale. I know i will be in consideration but i wanted to know what is it that will really make things tick the right way to make me a favorable cadidate for the top 5 schools. I have considered working for another couple of years but my issue with that is, wherever i go i am not going to be in a real "managerial position" and its going to be the same BS tht will be dished out because i am 22 and have been working for just 2 years. So i dont really want to waste another couple of years trying to push myself up pointlessly. SO my MAIN QUESTION is is 720 enough? I got a 6 on my AWA ( i dont know how cause i hadnt prepared for it whatsoever) will that give my score a higher weight or is it really as inconsequential as people say it is? Do hope some of you can give me some insight into the matter Thanks Ps: Undergrad Degree: BS Economics-concentration- Forecasting and Finance; Minor- Statistics Origin: India (I finished high school there)

  6. Hey i just wanted to start a thread to discuss the various possibilities of exploring a M.S. in Finance I know alot of people are gunning for just their MBA but incase some of you have been considering a more specialized Financial Degree and are interested to discuss things then do drop a line. I am a B.S. in Economics and am currently working @IMF; I am looking at applying to schools like: UC Berkeley London School of Economics George Washington University University of Chicago Boston U. By the way out of curiosity does anyone know why some of these schools requires the GRE and dont accept the GMAT? I was under the impression that the GMAT was tougher and held more weight. Hope to see some posts soon
  7. Can someone explain this i have no clue of how this was done Thanks
  8. Ok correct me if i am wrong but look at this intuitively if in covering a distance your average speed is 24 km/hr(as you said let us consider it tobe from A to B) and then to cover that distance again your speed is 48km/hr (Bto A) now if u r trying to figure out ur average travel speed shouldnt it be (24+48)/2 and the other thing is the rational behind your formula of 2*24*48/24+48=32 didnt quite make sense to me if you can elaborate a little please Ciao
  9. Man i wish ever math question on the GMAT was related to Poker...it would make understanding things so much more fun...sorry i dont mean to deviate from the subject her is how it goes: Answer is A 140 Chips; $100 chips= 20% of total chips=>28 $20 chips= 80% of total chips=>112 let the total number of chips used in the first bet be X so if 10% of these X chips is $100 chips and the rest $20 chips and we assume that all the chips for the bet come from the original 140 chips we can set up this equation (112-0.9x)/(140-x)= 0.7 basically because this is the new ratio of $20 chips to the total number of chips left work this out and you get x=70 now the simple part 7 of these are $100 chips and the rest $20 chips so you get 700+1260=$1960 Hope the answer is right but in my opinion that is too large a bet considering his pot size Cheers
  10. Hi does anyone know of any link that can help me brush up on my permutation and combination rules? Even though there are ways of doing the problems for the gmat but going through the selection of each element and then reducing the total pool i felt it will be helpful for everyone if someone could share a link which defines the basics of when to use what i.e. permutation or combination. Cheers
  11. I dont think that is right vsrc100 Speed for the first trip will come to 24m/hr and the second trip is done in half the time so double the speed- 48m/hr the average of that is 36 m/hr :) detail: 36 km in 90 min or 1.5 hrs s*t=d ===> 36/1.5=24 m/hr ===> 36/.75= 48 m/hr average is 36m/hr what you did is add up the distances and the times, which cannot be done, simple explanation is you cannot add two fractions with different denominators like that 36/1.5+36/.75 is not = 72/2.25 cheers! try it out and tell me
  12. I think Nonie's response was probably easiest to understand but basically, with a 11% fall in car sales and 7 % rise in truck sales u r looking at an equation like this 107%x+ 89%y= 101%(x+y) x= truck sales and y= car sales work it out to get 1:2 ==> car:truck cheers
  13. Area of a triangle is 0.5 *base *height= area you need one more variable or some information of the ratio of the base vs. the height. Any other info?
