  2. Guys, tht ONE AND HALF YEAR PREPARATION is actually ONE AND HALF MONTH OF PREPARATION..... I just posted this so that no one gets confused that GMAT requires high preparation.....
  3. Hi shahid......hey man, we definitely need to keep in touch...I have added ur id on msn.. so accept it and tell me when can we chat??
  4. Hi David.... I must admit that u r doing a gr8 job helping MBA aspirants to make apt decisions.. Thank you a lot. Well, I too am one of MBA aspirants.. My name is Karan, and I am from India. I did my undergraduate in Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA, a 3 year bachelor's degree course in India) and completed it in 2002. I joined a 1 year Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Management in order to fulfill the criteria of 12+4. I don't have any idea regarding my GPA, but as far as rankings are concerned based on percentage, I was one of the top 5 students in my college, and I think one of top 20 students in the university. I completed my PG diploma in 2003, and since then I am into my family business. Our business is of edible oil trading, and we are leading importers of edible oil from Malaysia and Chicago. My elder brother did his MBA from US, and now, he's employed in a leading MNC here in India. I too decided to pursue my MBA from US, and so gave the GMAT on 28th september 2004 ( I didn't had much time to prepare, so just prepared for 2 weeks or so) and scored 630 (quant - 46, verbal - 31, AWA 5.0). I took the TOEFL after few days i.e.9th of October 2004, and got a range of 223-277. I received my official TOEFL score a few days back, and scored 273. I was thinking of applying to PACE university, NY prior to giving my GMAT and TOEFL (one reason for choosing PACE was that 2 of my friends are already in PACE, but they had a GMAT of 550 and 580). After getting the GMAT score, my elder brother adviced to look for some other good institutes, as I might get admitted there with my scores and other stuff. I did send my scores to RICE university when I appeared for GMAT and TOEFL. I even mailed to RICE people regarding my scores and other stuff, and got a reply from them that my GMAT score of 630 is within their range, and a work-ex could be fine enough, but they need me to get my credentials evaluated from some evaluating agency. One of my friend told me that RICE might not approve my Post Graduate Diploma as 1 year of undergraduate study. So I am in a dilemma as to what should I do. So I request you to please go through my post and suggest me whether I should be going for PACE, or can I get admitted into any better institute than that.......Please note that I am interested in doing my Major in FINANCE. Thanks and regards, Karan
  5. Hi ERIN and all other TestMagicians...... I finally have my official TOEFL score and its 273.... So now, my scores are GMAT - 630 with 5.0 on AWA TOEFL - 273 (5.5 on Essay) My undergraduate GPA is 3.6......I have done a 3 years Bachelor's Course after completing my 10+2, and then did 1 more year of Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Management.. I have 1.5 years of work-ex.. But I am not able to decide as to which business schools should I go for? I wish to do my major in FINANCE, and I tried a lot to try and find a few good business schools, wherein I can get admitted, but I couldn't find the desired Institute. Two of my friends have gone to PACE university, NY this fall sem., and they too r doing their major in finance, but their GMAT scores were slightly lower than me (one had a 550 and other 580)... So ERIN and all other guys, could you please help me to select a decent business school for myself.......... PLEASE REPLY AT YOUR EARLIEST....... Regards, KARAN
  6. Hi, my GMAT is in couple of days, so please someone rate this essay :- TOPIC :- Do you agree or disagree with the following statement? People should sometimes do things that they do not enjoy doing. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answer. I certainy agree with the statement that people should sometimes do things that they do not enjoy doing. I will state a few circumstances under which a person will be forced to do something which he doesn't enjoy doing. A person may do such things just for the sake of happiness of his loved ones, or because he is under a compulsion of doing it. Consider an example of a person who loves his wife a lot and who doesn't enjoy going to a concert. But if his wife is a huge fan a particular singer, and that singer organises a live concert in the city, that person will certainly go to the concert even if he doesn't enjoy going, just becuase his wife is keen on attending the concert. He will do this just for the happiness of her wife. Thus, even if the person doesn't enjoy going to concerts, he will attend the concert just for the sake of his wife's happiness. However, its not always happiness of the loved ones that drives a person to do something that he doesn't usually enjoy doing. There may be several other reasons. He might be forced to do something he doesn't enjoy doing if its compulsory for him to do it. Consider an example of a person who is suffering from tooth decay. He may not enjoy going to a dentist to get the treatment, as the treatment is really painful, but he has to do it just because it is the only way to save his tooth. Consider another example of a sportsman, who has to go for a drug test, even if he does not enjoy going for it, just because the rules demand it. Moreover, there may be several other reasons under which a person may do something which he doesn't usually enjoy doing. A person may learn swimming, even if he is afraid of water and doesn't enjoy swimming, just because he has to travel a lot through water-ways because it is the only travelling medium available to him to go to certain places. Also, a person may lie sometimes for some good cause, even if he doesn't enjoy lying. To conclude, I would say that different circumstances force people to do things which they do not usually enjoy doing.
  7. Thanks a lot Dingus for such a wonderful and systematic scan of my essay.......By the way, how many grades does this essay deserve according to u?
  8. Think of the most interesting class you have ever taken. Why did you enjoy this class so much? Use specific reasons and details to explain your answer. Every person in his life has a special day. And every person who has gone done schooling and college has a memorable class taken. I am not an exception. I too have a very memorable class taken during my under graduate collage. I was in the second year of BBA, and it was a marketing management lecture. Our teacher was a highly qualified individual, and she was an MBA. Normally, she teaches in a very ordinary way, like explaining different concepts and then dictating the notes. But that day, she had a different concept of teaching in her mind. So as soon as the class began, she called me up along with two other female students. We were wondering as to what was going to happen, and why she called us up. But then, she didn't took long to explain her motive of calling us. She assigned a role play to us, where I had to perform the role of a salesman, and I had to sell a washing powder. The two female students were asked to perform the role of house-wieves, to whom I had to convince to buy the washing powder. Well, prior to this role play, I had never done any acting, as I was kind of "stage-shy". So I was kind of uninterested in doing the play, but the teacher told me that I will have to do it, and if I don't, it will affect my practical project markings. So, as it was a compulsion, I decided to do it. We had just 5 minutes to prepare for the play. So we decided to go to other room, and frame a nice play. So we did that, and came up with a nice idea. The idea was that I, being a salesman, will use a tactic to show the qualities of my companies washing powder as compared to that of other companines washing powder. So, the play began, and I approached the first house-wife. I knocked the door and as soon as she opened, I started explaining the qualities of the powder. But, as this was my first ever acting experience, I couldn't do the act properly. The teacher asked us to try it once again, but again I failed. I was feeling a bit guilty of not performing up to my teacher's expectations. But then, the teacher came up to me and depicted me as to how should I do it. She even visualized her perception of a salesperson in me, and it really helped. Then, we decided to try it again, and as it was for the third time, I had decided that if I don't do it well this time, I won't ever take a part in a play again. Surprisingly, this time I did the play in a very comprehensive manner, and even the teacher clapped at my performance. It was such a great feeling, a feeling of achieving something after putting a lot of effort. I was so joyous and filled with a feeling of satisfaction. And this class brought a massive change in me towards acting. After that class, I took part in several role plays, and even in dramas. And that class act influenced my life so much, that today, I am an actor performing on stage shows and I have even acted in a serial. I thank my teacher and that one particular class, which lead my career to a new path.
  9. is the answer to the (2) its??
  10. related to is not correct either zorillo... it is a continuous process, so -ing verb is better suited.........the correct answer has to be "relating the life and work of"
  11. Hi all, I am done with my GMAT and got a score of 630:tup: ........well now, I need some help from you all for choosing a nice business school... I am considering applying to following schools for MBA ( I want to major in finance) Pace unviersity, NYC Rice university, Texas SUNY at Binghampton NYU San Fransico state university.. So guys, it would be great if you all provide some reviews on these colleges and particulary on PACE and RICE, as those are my preferences, and also on the fellowships offered by them.........Also, if you guys know some better business schools, who offer fellowships, and my score of 630 will suffice their requirements, then please give me those names too........
  12. Hi guys, I have started my application process......Well, I have a few colleges on my mind, and I need to know whether they are good ? Well, I have a GMAT score of 630 (and I thank this forum for helping me out a lot) I have sent my GMAT scores to 1) PACE university, NYC 2) Rice University, Houston, Texas 3) San Fransico State University 4) NYU and 5) SUNY at Binghampton... But my first preferance is PACE and second one is RICE........so guys, any reviews regarding PACE and RICE?? And any ideas regarding the career opportunities after doing an MBA from these business schools??
  13. Hi ashish, Hey man, I haven't yet considered for applying to PGSM course of IIMB..........When is the application deadline for it and what is their score requirement?? Well, currently I have planned to apply to universities in US and will be applying as soon as I appear for my TOEFL.. By the way, where are u applying ?
  14. Hi guys, I am finally through with GMAT........And u know what, I m MORE THAN SATISFIED........I know, all u guys must be wondering about a 630 score to be satisfactory, but guys, with just one and half year of preparation, and that too, without any knowledge of Grammar rules (and probably that was the reason I got 31 on verbal) and a commerce base, I think 630 is a great score for me........ And the colleges which I am aiming at need more than 550 and a 600+ would open gates for me to get assisstantships easily.........So, I got what I wanted........ Well, now I too have joined the group of people who belive in [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip].......and u know what, I didn't refer to any other book except [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] for verbal.....and even for quant, I did most of topics from [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip].. Its just that for Probability and Permutation and Combination, I refered to a few other books... and guys, that really paid, as I got 4 probability questions, all including Combinations, and one separate Permutation Problem, and I think, I did most of them correct... I have been reading the experiences of most of the GMAT forum members, so I think its time for me to write a few lines now.....Well, my GMAT location wasn't in my own city, but it was in a nearby city. My GMAT was on 28th of Sep. and time was 9 am to 1 pm.. So I left my home a day back, and reached ahmedabad (its the city where my GMAT was scheduled) on the previous night.. Although I did carry [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip] and other books, but I wasn't able to refer to them, as while travelling by bus, I couldn't study because of too much noise.. So I watched a movie which the bus people played.... After reaching ahmedabad, I was tired, so I decided to go to sleep and wake up at around 6 in the morning... I have read many people on this forum saying that sleep was far away from them on the night prior to G-Day, but thankfully, I did manage to get a sound sleep.... I woke up in the morning at 6, but was a bit tired, so it took me half an hour to get out of my bed.....I took a quick bath, and dressed up well...(as I too m a strong believer that u feel good when u dress up well) Then just took a quick glance at the notes I had prepared and then left for the GMAT test centre.. I was at the centre at around 8:30, and there were a few other test takers already present on the test centre.. The GMAT administrator gave me a few papers, which I had to fill.. Then, one by one, she verified all the identifications of all the test takers.... and then, she went in to the GMAT test taking room.. After that, she started calling all the test takers one by one.. My turn was 8th, so it took very long to get the test taking room....It was around 9:15 am....I was trying hard to calm my nerves down.. and when I was assigned the computer where I had to take the test, my heart beats were cruising......and more so, because I hadn't prepared for AWA section, so I was hoping that I get easy topics... well, when I clicked on proceed, they asked me to enter the school names to which I want to send my GMAT score...Now, I had carried a list with me, but I was told to leave that list outside... So I called up the administrator, and she told me to go out and memorize the list.....So I did that, and came back and selected the names......and then clicked on PROCEED.. Well, my Analysis of ISSUE topic was an easy one (it was something like technology allienates people more than it brings them together).. I stated my views disagreeing the argument.. The analysis of argument topic too was not all that difficult (something like a school had adopted interactive computer info system and a few of their students achieved great results after that...) Well, I presented my arguments weakining the conclusion stated...( I hope I get a decent score on AWA).. Then I took a break, and returned when only 10 secs were left for the break to finish.. So I clicked on Proceed.......and then started the real test.....well, first 3 questions were easy ones (average, median kinds) but the third one was a DS involving geometry.....and It took me 4 mins to solve that question.. I think I did that correct.........and then, the forth one was probability..So I started to think that the tough things have started a bit too early...but well, I kept on moving, and I got a few extremely tough questions involving Standard deviation ( on which I had to guess) and geometry (which I managed to solve after spending 4 mins)........but I knew that I was pacing well... and when the final 10 questions were left, I had 19 mins on hand.......So I was able to finish the section with 1 min still left.....I was satisfied as I knew I did most of the questions correct....Then again, I took a break, but this time returned in 2 mins... After I came back, I decided to sit back and take a few deep breaths and so I relaxed for 2 more mins, and then clicked proceed.........Well, the verbal section started with a tough SC, a long one, with most of it underlined....I spent almost 4 mins on it (and guys, I don't know any grammar rules like a verb, noun, adverb...etc. So I just read all the choices and try to see the parallelism of words and then select the one, which I find most suitable) Well, I wasn't sure of whether my 1st answer was correct or not, but then, as I had already spent 4 mins, I decided to click on the choice which best suited me.......Then came another SC, but it was an easy one.... so it took me just a min to do it. Well, the third quetion was RC, and it was a long one (around 60 lines) and that too, a bio one.....So I read it carefully, and then got four questions.....Well, I completed my RC in around 8 mins.... Actually, I had decided prior to exam that I will not approach my exam in such a way, that I will have to solve final 10 ques in five mins.....So I was constantly reviewing time....and I think it helped a lot... I got four RC's in the entire verbal section, and one was very tough, which I hardly understood, but still, I think I got 2 out of 4 ans. right in that one...... I got around 10-12 CR's and I am sure I did most of them correct... I got around 10 SC's (well, I don't know how many of them I got correct).......When the finaly 10 questions were left, I had around 18 mins left, but now my mind was constantly thinking of what kind of score will I get after 18 mins..... Well, finally, I was done with the verbal section, again with 1 min to spare....Then clicked on the magic button "PROCEED"..... I thought that I will get the option to cancel my score or report it next, but then, I got a survey prior to it.. I had a choice whether to take the survey or not, but I decided to spend a few mins and take the survery.... So I clicked yes.. and there were several quetions on the survey....So my patience finally ended, and after attempting a few of survery questions, for the rest of the survey, I didn't select any choice and just kept clicking next.......Then came that crucial question, whether I want cancel my score or report... I clicked on report, but it again asked me of the same thing, that r u sure u want to report ur score.....so I again clicked yes...and YAHOOOOO, my score was 630...[quant 46 (80 percentile) and verbal 31 (62 percentile), overall 630 (79 percentile) ]...... I was very happy, and was too excied to get out of the center quickly and call home.... but then, I had to wait a while until I got an unformal copy of my score, and then, again a survey regarding my experience at the test centre was given to me...... I finished it in a min, and left the centre, switced on my cell, and called up my home.....then my friends, my other relatives..........Well, rest all is the celebration part, which I am sure, u all won't be interested in.......And now, I will be appearing for my TOEFL very soon.....and then the applications and other stuff....but I think, a major part is now over..... I wish all the guys taking GMAT in near future a very best of luck... and I am thankful to afriendlydragon and ashish (post2ashish) for their valuable advice and rohit (spiderman) for his notes and all the advices....... and last but not the least, I thank Erin for starting such a wonderful forum.....
  15. If the rate of smaller pump is 2/3rd of larger pump, tht means a small pump takes 3/2 of the time a larger pump takes. Therefore, when all four will work together, they will take 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 1 3/2 3/2 3/2 h Therefore, h = 1/3 i.e. One third of the total time taken by larger pump......
  16. I am confused.....It doesn't ask whether n is positive....ques is if n=2 or not? also I think ANY in this sense means all of the distinct factors..........URSULA, ur help needed for this...
  17. This one is DS ques no. 248 from [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip].. Is 1/p > r (r^2)+2 (1) p = r (2) r > 0 Ans. C (Both together are needed) Well, I solved it like this...... From (1) p=r So, 1/r > r/(r^2)+2 Multiplying both sides by (r^2)+2, we get (r^2)+2/r > r Now multiplying both sides by r, we get (r^2)+2 > r^2........which is always true for any number, positive or negative...... Then shouldn't the answer be (A)..:( ???????
  18. Hi, this is 243 DS ques of [tooltip=Official Guide]OG[/tooltip].. If the integer n is greater than 1, is n equal to 2 ? (1) n has exactly two positive factors. (2) The difference of any two distinct positive factors of n is odd Ans. B (i.e. (2) only is sufficient) I know that (1) can't be sufficient as any prime no. has exactly two positive factors, 1 and itself But then, I don't understand why its (B).. for e.g. if n=4 then its factors are 1,2 and 4.. and difference between 4 and 1 is odd...:( ....So guys please help me out on this
  19. Is 2^x greater than 100 ? (1) 2^(root x) = 8 (2) 1/2^x Ans. D (i.e. both r sufficient independantly) I have some confusion about the (2) part, so could anyone please tell me how (2) alone is also sufficient to answer the question.......
  20. The answer is B.........for (a) remainder of N/3 can be any from 0, 1 or 2...... But (b) alone is sufficient as for any value of N for which N+1/3 has remaider 2, has 1 as a remainder for N/3.
  21. Hi guys, I want to know a few thing from you all........First and foremost, what do you need to carry when you go for the test?? I am from India, and have registered for the test online, so is Passport the only thing I need to carry along ?? Secondly, I know that you need to give 5 college names to which ETS will forward the GMAT score for free, but do they require the reporting code or just the college name is enough?? And guys, I need a bit of help from you all in selecting the business schools... I haven't researched much about and so I don't know where to apply.... My interest is in MBA in Finance... 1 of my preference is PACE, NJ... and other is in Houston.........So can you please give me a few good business school names so that I can select those and send my scores too.... Thanks, Karan...

Okay, I got it now..... I think its better to think of such questions as how to how many ways are there to arrange (HHHTT)..... So its 5!/3!*2! as HHH is repeated thrice and TT is repeated twice..... so n(S) = 32 and n(E) = 10 Therefore, P(E) = 10/32 = 5/16.........
  23. yeah, I too didn't get wht the ques. is trying to say.

when the probablily of 3H is 5C3, and only two places are left for 2 tails, shouldn't the answer be 5C3+2C2/32 i.e. 21/32 ???
  25. Is the answer (B)......?? I m not sure of the difference between supposed and supposedly..... but I think supposedly sounds a bit awkward......
