1. More info about Mres (still no info about funding) "You would need to actively apply for admission to the MRes programme. The application period for September 2014 entry will be from late-October 2013 to mid-January 2014. If you were to be enrolled on our MSC Economics programme at that time, you would qualify for an offer conditional on achieving a Distinction-level performance in your MSc exams and in the dissertation. About 20-25% of MSc Economics students have achieved that level of performance in recent years."
  2. Awesome. I will also ask some of the PHD students about fundings. :)
  3. I have no clue. We should probably ask the admission office.
  4. @MikeS I just got another reply from a current PHD student, he mentioned the class size for mres is about 20-30, for PHD is less (since mres students need to finish with distinction in order to get into the PHD program). (Funding) There are more funding opportunities during MRes (TA... etc.), It seems like there are about 10 scholarship positions, plus unknown numbers of TA positions available each year. plus 2 Ricardo Scholarships (3 years, The value of each scholarship is £15,590, plus FULL (OVERSEAS OR UK/RATE) TUITION FEE WAIVER. ) plus other sources of funding such as ESRC. (Economics) for Msc, it's much harder to get funded. US phd programs tend to fund more, that's why I am planning to apply for several US phd programs during Mres next year.
  5. Hey! I am also considering going to UCL msc. similar situation, rejected by all US PHD's, only one funded MA offer from Miami-oxford (ohio) ------------ For Phd application: I think most of the students who attend msc, applied their phd during Mres, with their msc grades, (grades are out around Sept, exam+thesis) In order to get into the Mres program, I think you will need a distinction (70+) on average (both exam and thesis). I also tried to contact several current UCL phd's to ask their Mres placements, one replied there were (I think who applied for Fall2011) two Mres students applied the US phd, one got into Chicago, and the other were accepted by Columbia, which is really impressive!! I don't know anything about the class size for Mres/PHD, nor funding. ------------ You can find more info from these threads: Please help in choosing between Master's programs(UCL and BGSE). (http://www.www.urch.com/forums/phd-economics/140590-please-help-choosing-between-masters-programs-ucl-bgse.html) End of year exams in the UK (http://www.www.urch.com/forums/phd-economics/140584-end-year-exams-uk.html#post907913) UCL MSc (unfunded) vs. CEMFI MSc (funded) - please urgent help (http://www.www.urch.com/forums/phd-economics/140247-ucl-msc-unfunded-vs-cemfi-msc-funded-please-urgent-help.html) MSc Economics at Warwick or UCL? (http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=803557) ------------ Labor Econ: (http://www.ucl.ac.uk/economics/graduate/faq) According to F&Q, it seems like Labor econ has a long reading list, you should probably start to some reading during the summer. I also found this from the internet, not sure if this is the correct reading list, since this is not from the same professor who's teaching this course (https://wiki.ucl.ac.uk/download/attachments/20715211/syllabus.pdf?version=1&modificationDate=1357669368000) ------------ Thesis Advisor: According to their website, I think you will need to start looking for a good topic, as well as contacting Professors at the end of the first semester. We will have all the time from May (after the exam) until Sep to complete the thesis. ------------ Math Refresher: You can start to preparing the math refresher courses now, somehow I found the syllabus from last year on their website. We will have an exam on math the around Oct , if fail, we get to take it again on May. Here is the reading list from last year: "For the mathematical background part of the course we will use (PB) Pemberton, M. and N. Rau (2006): “Mathematics for Economists: An Introductory Textbook”, Manchester University Press and we strongly recommend you have it for reference. The statistics part will focus on (W) Wooldridge, J. (2010): “Econometric Analysis of Cross Section and Panel Data”, MIT Press, 2nd edition. This book will also be used in the core econometrics courses later on and we suggest you have this one for reference as well. In addition, we will draw on (DS) DeGroot, M. H. and M. J. Schervish (2011): “Probability and Statistics”, Pearson, 4th edition for some of the more basic concepts in statistics. If you have a solid background in statistics, you may not need to buy (DS) ----------- I look forward to seeing you at this fall http://www.www.urch.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.png
  6. I am an international students study at a public US University. I've been accepted by both programs. My ultimate goal is to get into top30 (world) PHD programs. I know I have to do very well (top 5% of the class? distinction) in either programs to achieve my goal. Miami(Ohio) is funded, and it has some really good placements (Master of Economics Program : Recent Placements) UCL, might get some strong recommendations, and my interest is micro/econometrics. I will apply for the 2015fall round (during MRes. Econ). I am just wondering which program will be a safer stepping stone towards good phd programs?
  7. Institution: Texas A&M Program: Econ PhD Decision: Rejected Notification date: 3/27/2013 Notified through: Website Posted on GC: No Comments: No email notification, checked application website. "Your application for admission to graduate studies has been reviewed by Economics. After carefully considering your application file, we regret to inform you that Economics is unable to offer you admission at this time."
  8. Thank you again, for all of your input! For me, this application round is not very successful. I am rejected by most of the PHD programs from the US, waitlisted by UW-Seattle, and accepted by UCL Msc.Econ (1 year). Since my interest is in Micro and econometrics, it seems like the best option is to go to UCL, get good grades (distinction) from the program, apply for UCL Mres. And reapply for PHD during my Mres year (2nd year). By then, hopefully I will know my REAL research interest, and get accepted by top 30 econ programs.
  9. Hi! I am an international student, graduating this May, have applied for grad school, and currently searching for RA positions/ think tank interns for this summer. For those who may be interested in doing think tanks after graduation, I found a link from Oxford University that has listed and categorised some major think tank firms. i hope someone finds this link helpful. Think Tanks – The Careers Service – Oxford University | Oxford University Careers Service :)
  10. If they have included the GRE Q from Masters Program applicants, will the data make sense?
  11. According to their website, the GRE grads are the average scores of successful applicants, still, this is too low. I thought most econ phd programs want 790+Q. Not sure about Minnesota :(
  12. Hi, Recently I found out that Brigham Young University has summarized the strength of some major US graduate programs in Econ, I am wondering if this source is reliable. (Self-Reported GRE Q seems a bit too low) source: https://economics.byu.edu/Pages/Graduate-Programs-in-Economics.aspx

Program Strongest Fields (Self-Reported) GRE (Self-Reported)* Contact Person US News Ranking (2009)**

Excellent in most fields

Harvard Most fields Q:770-800 Brenda Piquet (617) 495-8927 5.0

MIT Most fields OAM*** Peter Hoaland (617) 253-1000 5.0

Princeton Most fields Q: 790 Kathleen DeGennaro (609) 258-4006 5.0

Stanford Most fields Q: 790-800 A: 5.0-5.5 Susie Madsen Gilbert (650) 725-6198 4.9

Univ. of Chicago Most fields (esp., Money and Banking, Labor, Econometrics) Q: 700-800 Julie Less (773) 702-8254 5.0

Excellent in some/several fields

Columbia Q; 750 A: 5.5 Jody Johnson (212) 854-3680 4.3

Cornell Econometrics, Micro/Game Theory, Monetary, Labor, Development Q: 670-760 Tapan Mitra (607) 255-4019 3.9

Michigan Public Finance, International (Finance & Trade), Labor Q: 770 Mary Braun (734) 764-2360 4.2

Minnesota Theoretical Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, Industrial Organization Q: 700-780 Chris Phelan (612) 626-2533 4.3

Northwestern OAM*** Andrew Wachtel (847) 491-5279 4.7

Penn Micro/Game Theory, Macroeconomics, Industrial Organization Q: 730-780 Dirk Krueger (215) 898-6691 4.4

Rochester Q: 700-780 Graduate Program (585) 275-8625 3.7

UC Berkeley Econometrics, Public Finance, Labor Q: 750-780 Patrick G. 13. Thank you! I told them I am interested in their program although I have an offer from UCL Msc Econ (unfunded)
  14. Thank you for your reply. Currently, I've only got one unfunded offer from University College London Msc Econ (which may be a very good step stone towards top 30 programs), I don't know which one to choose if UW give me an offer. :((((((
