  1. Did you get a funded offer? I got admitted to the program last week, but nothing has been said about funding. I am interested in macro, too. As far as I know, Professor Turnovsky is extremely well-known, but he is quite old, so I am not sure if he will be able to advise students in next 5 years.
  2. Wow. Very interesting. What do you think?
  3. I got waitlisted for first year fellowship from a school that I plan to visit. Should I ask some questions about that when I meet the DSG?
  4. 50k + 1 year of researching experience at a top-notch school seems to be a sweet deal to me. One year older in academia doesn't make any difference.
  5. Mine changes to "Final Review" as well. Ready to get another official rejection/waitlist
  6. Wasn't you invited to the open house? Anyone got OSU fellowship so far?
  7. I emailed the coordinator and got waitlisted for fellowship. I've realized that in the invitation they sent me on Feb 19, it started with "Dear Admit" instead of "Dear Fellowship Nominee" in the follow up email from the GSD. What did you guys see in the invitation email?
  8. just got Ohio State open house invitation. Funding decision will be out next week.
  9. No, I don't know for sure. However, last month, the day before I received a nomination from OSU, I checked my application and found the same kinds of documents requested. Maybe it's a good sign! Hopefully they are working to send out official email with funding decision.
  10. To anyone who got accepted to Rochester: last night when I check my application, I found something new in the upload box (copy of passport, financial document, and new student request to I20). What does it mean? I haven't received any official email from the school, should I contact them to ask?
  11. First Minnesota admit was posted on gradcafe. Is it legit? I am literally freaking out!
  12. OSU's admission system is pretty tricky. I've got the official acceptance email today, but when I checked my application status yesterday, I found 3 new sections under application requirements tab: Affidavit of Support, Confidential Bank Statement, and Copy of Passport. I think you might want to check that for "unofficial" acceptance. Anw, what is the expected date for OSU's fellowship result? The first fellowship result posted on thegradcafe last year was March 1. Is it really that late?
  13. Institution: Ohio State University Program: Economics PhD Decision: Accepted Funding: Not yet Notification date: 1/14 Notified through: Email Posted on GC: Yes Comments: My first acceptance!
  14. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: BS Math, BA Econs from a small liberal arts college in Ohio (USNews top 100-ish) Undergrad GPA: 3.9/4.0 Type of Grad: None Grad GPA: None GRE: 168 Q, 150 V, 3.5 A (will low verbal and writing hurt my chance, given I am an international student?) Math Courses: Calc I,II,III (As), Matrix Algebra (A), Linear Algebra (A+), Intro to Proof (A+), Real Analysis (A+), Numerical Analysis (A+), Statistics I,II (A,A), Math Stat I,II (A, A+), Independent Studies: Topology (Munkres's Topology, A), Measure Theory (Bartle's The Elements of Integration and Lebesgue Measure, A+), DiffEQ (IP), Abstract Algebra (IP) Econ Courses (grad-level): None Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Principle, Intermediate Micro - Macro (As), Econometrics (A), Money and Banking (A), International Trade and Finance (A), Game Theory (Examination, B+), Summer Independent Studies: Advanced Macro, Advanced Micro (Pass) Other Courses: 5-week summer session at Fudan University. Letters of Recommendation: 2 econs profs and 1 math prof who supervise my independent studies and know me well. Research Experience: 2 independent summer research grants from my university. Teaching Experience: None Research Interests: Macroeconomics, International Economics, Econometrics. SOP: Standard Concerns: First of all, though I got pretty good grades in Math, they would be heavily discounted due to my school's low rank. More importantly, though my recommenders got PhD from reputable schools (UPenn, Austin), they are purely teaching profs so I don't know how adcoms will evaluate my LORs. However, at least 3 students from my school were placed at top 20, 30 in the past 5 years. I think that placement record is impressive given the small size of our economics department. Other: Applying to: UPenn, Minnesota, Rochester, Hopkins, Ohio State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, UWashington-Seattle, WUSTL, UNC Chapel Hill, Texas A&M, UBC Master, Queen's Master. Can you help me to pick some safeties schools decent in Macro? How competitive is Canada master program admission?
  15. I'm gonna do an empirical research this summer. What is the site/database that economists often use? I know that NBER, CBO are the best for U.S data but I also need world data. Any suggestions?
