  1. The only GRE I took was last summer 2013, and I had utilized 4 free score reports back then. I'm applying in this cycle, and I was wondering if they still keep my scores. Would those schools still have my GRE score? (I had those reports sent to correct department code) or would I have to send another score report now?
  2. Hi all, Can anyone tell me which portions of micro theory (general eq, game theory, etc) I need to review before reading seminal papers in IO (e.g. ones in the Handbook of Industrial Organization)? I had studied micro theory, but it was a while ago and I need to review only some necessary parts. Many thanks!
  3. As said on the tile, I went to a university in the US and graduated. I am NOT a US citizen (therefore, an international student). Do I need TOEFL scores in this case? I've checked several admissions website, and they say it suffices to have graduated from a English-using college.
  4. Hi guys, I wanted to create a list of "classics" in economics that I hope to read over the summer. What I want from these books is the philosophy behind economic theories, because I think it is as much important as fancy quantitative skills. I find it especially is the case for labor, IO, and monetary economics, (and of course many others; those are my main interests) So here is my list, and I greatly appreciate suggestions! Adam Smith, Wealth of Nations Karl Marx, The Capital M. Friedman, Capitalism and Freedom I hope to chip in some books by Hayek and Mises, but I can't figure out which one to choose...
  5. Well, it's one of the top programs, so it must be good at many fields, but what field is notably strong? (I have heard that IO is good, but what about others?) What are some of the fields where most working papers are written, seminars working lively, and so on?
  6. Just in general.... It seems Stata and Matlab are often used, and some sophisticated people seem to use R. Some of the old works (around until 2004/2005 maybe?) provide GAUSS code, but do people still use it? Or what about Python or C++? (I heard from one prof that most econ people cannot understand C++ codes, so he rather chose to write codes in Matlab, despite its slow computation)
  7. Is it enough for top 10? But some schools, for example Princeton, state that their incoming students have 780-800 score for ALL sections.
  8. Thanks for your opinions. I'm thinking of two different schedule for this fall. Should I take either: 1) grad metrics and some other field course or 2) grad metrics and grad micro (FYI, I'm a huge fan of metrics and quite confident about it)
  9. PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: large research university with top 10 econ dept Undergrad GPA: 3.9 Type of Grad: N/A Grad GPA: N/A GRE: planned for this August (expect 170Q) Math Courses: Calculus Seq (A+), Linear Algebra (A+), ODE, PDE (A+,A+), Real Analysis Seq (A+,A-), Probability (using measure theory) (A-), Abstract Algebra Seq (A,A), Intro Calculus-based Stat (A+) Econ Courses: Econ 101, Intro Micro, Macro, Metrics (all A's), Adv Macro (B+), Adv Micro (A), Adv Metrics (A), Financial Econ (A), Game Theory (A+), Law and Economics (A-) Other Courses: some physics - mechanics, electromagnetism (A's) Letters of Recommendation: 1) senior prof in metrics/macro (took the adv metrics course) 2) junior prof in metrics/IO (research assistant for a year) Research Experience: RA for a year with prof 2 in the above - involving lots of MATLAB, Stata codes Teaching Experience: math TA 1 yr (calculus, linear algebra), econ TA 1 yr (intro micro) Research Interests: pretty much everything - except for monetary macro. maybe something not theoretical. I am pending on applying this year (for 2014 entry) or for 2015. For the next year (my last year in undergrad), I'm planning on taking graduate metrics sequence and writing a senior thesis (and maybe take some more econ field courses e.g. trade/monetary/IO and higher level math courses e.g. topology). I think these additional stuff would make my profile more competitive for 2015... a problem would be finding something to do during the gap year (maybe a year-long RAship, if any?) so... apply now or next year?
