  1. So I saw on GC that UCLA Anderson had sent out interview invites, but the one dude that responded to a "Quant or CB" response said he was quant. Did a anyone who applied for CB get an invite? Also, called U-Washington (Foster) to check in on my app, they said they were taking three total and had already admitted one.
  2. Stanford rejection, official HBS rejection just arrived as well.
  3. Is it actually a not-bad sign that I haven't been rejected yet? Like, for the schools that have already sent out interview invites, where's the line between "Not rejected yet" and the "implicit rejection" people speak of?
  4. Hey guys - Would you say it's late enough in the application cycle to not feel awkward about calling the doctoral program offices to ask about the status of your application? I haven't heard anything from anyone even though I know some of the programs I applied to have sent out interview invites according to here and GC (not the best sign, I know), and I'm curious to see what's going on. Thanks!
  5. Hey everyone - Just wanted to throw my name into the waiting pot. Best of luck to us all :) Program: Marketing (CB) Age: 21 Sex: Male Nationality: South Korea GRE: 167V, 165Q, 4AWA Undergrad: Interactive entertainment, w/ music industry minor Large T25 west coast private university GPA: 3.47 Grad: MCM (Master of Communication Management) Same institution as undergrad. GPA: 4.0 Work experience: N/A - Part time and on-campus gigs. Teaching experience: 3 years as independent English tutor. Research experience: Assisted with descriptive analysis, data visualization, and graphic design in report prepared by the comm school for major organization; worked as research assistant for non-profit organization. Letter of recommendation: 3 positive; 1 from associate professor from grad course (supervisor for above comm school report), 1 from grad program assistant director, 1 from undergraduate program assistant professor. Research interests: Application of transmedia in entertainment marketing. Schools in consideration: West coast schools and three Ivies, 10 total.
  6. @Evergreen - Yeah, I really love my majors/minor, I've learned about everything I've ever been interested in and built a solid skill set in the process. Sorry to have mentioned the international note, I'm American in all but paperwork, but I thought it'd be worth mentioning in case it made a difference with your evaluations. I've noticed a fair amount of overlap between business and comm when it comes to marketing, and my professor seemed to agree, immediately mentioning how the department sends to/receives people from business schools all the time. I'm definitely CB track, I've learned a lot of behavioral psych type stuff in my comm classes. And gretta, my point exactly. The case I'm trying to make for myself through my SoP and LoRs is that although I may not have legendary experience, I have the perfect background to do what I want to do. I understand the entertainment industry very well, and this understanding will help me ask the right questions think of creative/innovative new research topics. I've chosen LoRs who I know appreciate my creative thinking and hard-working nature. **QUESTION** though: I've heard people talking about how I need to only mention research in my SoP and how mentioning research/teaching loses points. Is this true? I mean, well-rounded is my middle name, and ideally I'd love to do research, share my research through teaching, and apply it in practice. Would it hurt
  7. Hey everyone - Thanks for the fantastically helpful responses ^^ Sorry to have mentioned the international student note, I'm basically American in all but paperwork because I've been here so long, but I thought I'd be worth a mention in case it made any difference in your evaluations. I think for the flavor of marketing I want to do (definitely CB), my communication background'll prove really handy - lots of behavioral psych stuff as far as I've seen. I was actually discussing my research idea/SoP with my professor the other day; she seemed to think it sounded solid/interesting and agreed with my observation that there's a fair amount of overlap between comm and business when it comes to marketing. Re LoRs, the angle I'm planning to pitch through the LoRs and my SoP is that although I may not have done a boatload of research yet, I definitely have the background to do great research related to the entertainment industries because I know how they work so well - and knowing how things work I feel helps you ask the right/interesting/new questions. The faculty I'm asking I know appreciate my out-of-the-box thinking and have all done work with the entertainment industries, so I'm hoping that'll count for something in combination with my (I presume) unusual background. @Evergreen - The video game coursework is fun ^^ I really do love my majors/minor, I've had a blast, I just belatedly wish I/the program had more of a research background =\ And thanks for the link =] And UGH I wanted to take the stats offered by our Psych department but they were basically like, "You're not a psych major, no." -_-;; Also, **Question** - when I write my SoP, should I blindly say all I want to do is research even though realistically, I'd love to do research, teaching, and practice? I've heard people say, "Oh no, mentioning anything but research loses you points," but I find that hard to believe. I've always been a 'well-rounded' approach person, that's my strength, and I would love to ultimately not only do research but share my research through teaching and apply my research in practice; would saying that hurt?
  8. I'm on a student visa; that'd make me an international student, I believe. By 'a few credits left' means that I have almost completed all of the requirements for my undergraduate degree. Yes, I am simultaneously pursuing both my bachelor's and my master's. It is indeed quite unfortunate my undergrad GPA is rather low =\ The nature of my undergraduate program is that it's more of a 'practice'/industry oriented one, not research. I have, however, taken countless music, video game, and film business courses. My graduate coursework does tend to have a research focus, and it's included a lot of communication theory (attitudes, values, behavior, etc - behavioral psych'y IMO), which is totally relevant. I'll be enrolled in a stats/research methods course for the graduate program in the fall. LoRs - the music industry faculty member has known me since my first semester at school and I've taken multiple classes with him, so I figure he'd make a good reference; he appreciates my talents and also wrote me a rec for my master's application. The comm professor does a lot of research not-too-distantly related to my own research interests. The marketing faculty member is active in the industry, and I figure it's a pretty solid choice.
  9. Hey guys, I'm applying to PhD programs this fall since I graduate next spring, and I just wanted to ask for some objective feedback on my profile. I feel like my relative lack of research experience is the biggest weak spot, but other than that, I think I have a decent profile? And if anyone knows any other good schools for my interests, I'm all ears. Thanks so much! - Basic: US-raised (since age 6) international student from Korea, age 21 Undergraduate and graduate institution: T25 private university Undergraduate major: interactive entertainment, w/ minor in music industry Graduate major: communication management (w/ multiple marketing courses) Undergraduate GPA (only a few credits left): ~3.47 Graduate GPA (so far, 6 classes left): 4.0 GRE: 167V, 165Q LoRs: communication faculty, marketing adjunct faculty, music industry faculty Research experience: currently a research intern for a non-profit, will be enrolled in my master's thesis class this fall/spring. Other professional experience: pretty stacked resume, good work experience and long skillset (lots of software/programming) Area of research interest: entertainment marketing (topic already narrowed, got a good SoP going) Prospective schools: USC, UCLA, Harvard, Yale, UWashington, UCB, Stanford, UCSD, INSEAD, CU-Boulder
