  1. hm..well I didn't know that Macro needs dynamic programming..Thx alot!!
  2. Thx, although I'd probably choose Micro since it carries more weight.
  3. Hm..Thx! I also talked to my professor and he told me the same thing. I'll just take the Micro then:)
  4. @sevet Thx! I guess it would be an intensive one..after all it's an upper math-_-
  5. Hi Insti, Thx for ur reply:) Here is a course description I found from our course schedule. Do u think it's what you're saying? "Fundamentals of optimization. Linear programming: basic solutions, simplex method, duality theory. Unconstrained optimization, Newton's method for minimization. Nonlinear programming, optimality conditions for constrained problems. Additional topics from linear and nonlinear programming."
  6. I'm not sure if the optimizations I learned in Calculus counts. I mean, all I can remember now is just some really basic ones like the first order condition, second order condition, etc..-_-
  7. Thx 14! I thought my profile would be bad without those Math courses. So glad I had asked here.
  8. Hi:) For grad Econ, I mean the sequence "grad probability for Econometrics", "Intro to Metrics I", "Intro to Metrics II", and the sequence on Micro. For undergrad upper math, I mean courses like "upper ODE","Mathematical modelings","Optimization", "Numerical Analysis I&II" and "Complex Analysis". Which ones are of the highest values to the admission committee? Thanks~!
  9. Hi guys, Do you think undergraduate Numerical Analysis is useful for Econ PhD? What if my interest is in the financial area then? Thanks in advance:)
  10. Well, I'm glad to learn that:) thx man
  11. Hi guys, I'm aiming for top 20 Econ PhD programs, do you think if my GRE is high enough or not? What about Top 10 then? GRE: Verbal 162, Quant 169, AW 4.5 Below are part of my profile: Type of Undergrad: West Coast Flagship U, US National top 20, Econ top 15 Undergrad GPA:3.95 Math Courses: Differential and Integral Calculus(AP transfer), Integration and Infinite Series (A), Calculus of Several Variables(A), Linear Algebra and Applications(A), Differential Equations(A), Calculus of Several Variables(A), Introduction to Discrete Structures(A+), Linear Algebra(A+), Analysis(A), Probability Theory(A+), Analysis(A) Econ Courses:Principles of Economics(A) Principles of Economics(A), Microeconomic Theory(A+), Statistics for Economists(A+), Microeconomic Theory(A+), Macroeconomic Theory(A+), International Trade Theory(A+), Introduction to Econometrics(B) Stats Courses: Introduction to Statistical Reasoning(A), Introduction to Mathematical Statistics(A), Linear Models(A) Thx everybody!:)
  12. Thanks Molan. You are right. I guess it's only because I started late contacting for research opportunities. I wish I had put more efforts to find faculties in the past year. Probably I concentrated on my study too much. All I was thinking about is those upper math courses, as I wanted to use them to demonstrate my ability to play with theoretical math. Speaking of auditing grad courses, I think that's gonna be a good idea. Better prepare myself for those grad courses this summer. Hmm..
  13. hmm...well I have to say to develop a relationship is really tricky, especially when I haven't taken the course yet. I've never done this before. Do you happen to have some example method in mind? About the visiting faculties, I asked Google and he says he couldn't find their CV...-_- So I don't really think they are full-time at other institutions. In that case, can I still ask them for letters? Thanks sulebrahim!
  14. Thanks:) I think it's a great solution to contact the professors. About the research courses, I just came back from the undergrad counselors, and they said it'd be really hard to find faculties willing to help during the summer:(
  15. So you mean I should apply for a MA like duke MA in Econ or just stay one more year at UCLA? I didn't count yet but I guess if I stay one more year at UCLA, my units would reach the maximum.
  16. Thank you jbulka22. The problem is that right now most of the economics courses I have taken are taught by visiting faculties, except 1 or 2. I will take 2 to 3 econ courses taught by UCLA faculties in the coming fall quarter, but considering the fact that the application deadline is before the date when grades are posted, is it possible to ask for letters from these faculties? I mean, at that time, they don't know my grades in their courses yet. It all seems to be too late....
  17. Hi Guys, I'm a third year undergraduate student, can you guys evaluate my profile and give me some advice please? I've no idea which tier I should apply for:( Type of Undergrad:UCLA Undergrad GPA:3.95 GRE: plan to take this summer Math Courses: Differential and Integral Calculus(AP transfer), Integration and Infinite Series (A), Calculus of Several Variables(A), Linear Algebra and Applications(A), Differential Equations(A), Calculus of Several Variables(A), Introduction to Discrete Structures(A+), Linear Algebra(A+), Analysis(A), Probability Theory(A+), Analysis(A) Econ Courses:Principles of Economics(A) Principles of Economics(A), Microeconomic Theory(A+), Statistics for Economists(A+), Microeconomic Theory(A+), Macroeconomic Theory(A+), International Trade Theory(A+), Introduction to Econometrics(B) Stats Courses: Introduction to Statistical Reasoning(A), Introduction to Mathematical Statistics(A), Linear Models(A) >>>There are some repetitions in names, but it's just because sometimes different courses in the same sequence share the same title. >>>All the courses are at undergrad level. I wish I could take some grad level Econ courses, but it's forbidden at UCLA. Concern: Although I did well in my coursework, and I have taken two real analysis courses, I'm still worried about my application since till now I have no research experience at all. Usually only research brings about good letters of recommendation, so I'm also worried about my letters. So can you guys give me some advice? It's already the end of my third year now, and I plan to apply in the coming fall quarter. What kind of schools should I apply? given the fact that I dont have research or strong letters from active professor yet:( Thanks.
  18. great, now i can enjoy my new quarter woohoo! thx!
  19. alas, i just exchange the ODE for complex analysis..sigh, wait for it to be open again. THX!
  20. Hi guys, I need your advice on my course enrollment. I can only take one of the ODE and Complex Analysis next quarter, which one do you think more useful for Econ PhD? Both are upper level classes. Thanks!
