  1. Thank Cerealist, I thought Economics is not on STEM list of majors. Will the working visa still be granted after 3 years? My goal is to work for WB or UN though I think they require u to be fluent in at least 3 languages and people usually need a Phd to get those jobs. I know someone working at the WB so I will ask them for more details about the placement. I just emailed some current students at UBC and they said the job placement is not very good there and to my surprise Vancouver does not offer lots of econ related jobs. It seems like both programs are designed to prepare students for phd.
  2. So do you think Canadian schools are better in terms of phd placement? and why BC is not a great place for searching jobs? I thought the diversity population there would give me more job opportunities. I do speak a little french but I dont know if knowing a third language is highly valued there. I heard that Canadian MA is more recognized than American one. (because of technical training? idk) In your opinion where would be the best place to find econ jobs in canada? and are there a lot of econ job opportunities for international students? (like do bank of canada accept non-native students?) Tks.
  3. Hi, I just got accepted to MA Economics at Duke and I am debating between going to duke or UBC in canada (they give me scholarship + TA worth $15,000). It would cost lots of money to go to Duke (especially when they dont promise any financial aid and TAs+RAs job probably wont be a big offset to the tuition) and I want to get a job after finishing the MA. Since I dont plan to pursue Phd in Econ can you guys comment on the job placement at Duke. Thanks.
  4. [h=1]Hi guys, I have been accepted to MA programs in Economics at Duke (waiting for funding decision but not likely) UBC ( international students scholarship $3,000 and TA $11,000) Mcgill ($10,000 TA or RA positions) I am an international student and I want to get a job after getting my Ma degree. I dont think I want to pursue a PHD in Economics. Also I have been reading the placement results at these schools, they all seem very promising but I am not sure which program would give me a great boost at getting a job. Right now, I am swaying towards Canadian schools because of their financial packages (plus the tuition is way cheaper there and they give me 2 years working permit after graduation) but I am not sure about the economic job market in Canada. And money aside, I do think Duke is better in terms of "prestigious brand name" and an American degree is more valuable in the long term. Someone can possibly correct me on this. Can someone pls help me making these decisions? Or give me some info about academic reputation and career prospect at these schools . I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks a lot. P/S : I have a BS in Economics at UoMinnesota and would like to go into development economics. [/h]
