  1. Hi all I am an international student and I have applied for several M.S. graduate programs in the US. 2 weeks after I submitted my application, one of my favourite schools requested me, among other things, to send them my financial situation and information about who was going to sponsor me at graduate school. While I do have the means to pay for most of my graduate school education if need be, I still want this particular school to consider me for the scholarships/RAs it gives out. On the university admission website it is clearly stated that one can send the financial details AFTER the admission decision has been taken and I am still yet to receive any news... I feel confused...anyone has been in a similar situation before?
  2. Would anyone recommend this program? 1) Erasmus Mundus - M.S. economic development and growth Master in Economic Development and Growth : Program It sounds good to me, especially there seems to be a strong emphasis on building strong research skills. Also I like the idea of spending the first year at UC3M and the second year in Sweden (No UK for me as I live in the UK and want to get out!) Suppose I make up for any Math deficiencies in different ways - LSE distance learning or additional class-based instruction - what do you guys think would be my chances to get into a top US PhD program (focus on development economics) later on? would appreciate your views on this one. cheers
  3. Thanks guys! I have had a closer look at the programs you have suggested. Well, eventually I would like to pursue a good PhD and specialise in development economics. Frankly, I am not too keen on German universities :) Would prefer a program in France or Spain, shame that Barcelona GSE is just one year. The PPD program from PSE sounds good, I am currently trying to get more info about it. TSE seems a good choice too, however I have read some negative comments on this forum, hence I'm not too sure...The most important criteria for me are solid quant training, a research component (thesis or more) and some exposure to development (through coursework or research, this would be a bonus though). Anyway, given my objectives, are there any concrete masters programs in Europe that would suit better?
  4. how about Paris School of Economics? is this good prep for a good PhD?
  5. thanks for the input. I am aware of LSE and Oxford but not keen to stay in the UK.. I have looked at Pompeu Fabra, seems interesting but masters there are just 9 months long, I wonder whether this is enough, personally would prefer a 2- year course... Any other European programs worth considering?
  6. I am looking to work in international development and possibly pursue a very good PhD program either in Europe or US afterwards. I have a BSc degree in Economics from a UK university but ideally would like to do a masters outside the UK :) Are there any rankings of economics master's programs in Europe? any suggestions? thanks a million!
  7. Suppose we have the following quadratic equation Ix^2 -5xI=1. How many solutions does the equation have? Seems like a straightforward problem however when I tried to solve it, I could not using the factoring method. Not sure, there may be some twist somewhere. Any suggestions would be great. thanks
  8. anyone can help with these? I've tried them myself (got A for Q1 and D for Q2) but want to check my solutions. thanks in advance... Question 1. If X is an integer less than 1. Column A standard deviation of 1,2, X Column B standard deviation of 1,2,1 Question 2 If the arithmetic mean of m and p is greater than n and m Column A The mean of m, n, p Column B The median of m,n,p
  9. I already have the official transcripts in both German and English. But I have the degree award certificate that still needs translating. Can I have a translation company do this? I have found one and they are certified. They will be able to add their stamp and signature to the translated document. Is that sufficient? Here notarisation is an additional special service (also extremely expensive!) and before I consider it, I need to know whether the diploma needs both certification and notarisation. Please help. thanks!
  10. thanks, much appreciated :)
  11. Great, thanks! I thought the same and wanted to double check here on the forum...
  12. Sorry, I dont understand question #1 although I thought I did.. Question 2: If you divide both expressions, you get y/x = 4, hence y=4x. It's obvious that y>x.
  13. Is it possible to calculate the area of an isosceles triangle only knowing the height? any thoughts?
  14. Hi I wonder whether anyone can lift me out of despair :) Any help would be much appreciated. # 1 A box contains 30 balls so that 6 are red, 7 are blue, 8 are white and 9 are purple. How many selections are needed to make sure that 2 balls of the same colour are chosen? a) 6 b) 7 c) 8 d) 9 e) 10 (It's funny because I would have picked 5 selections, however, 5 is not listed as a possible answer; any ideas? it would be nice to hear your thoughts on this one) # 2 A jar contains 6 red buttons and 10 black buttons. If two buttons are picked at random and without replacement, what is the probability of picking two buttons of different colour? (Here I've got 1/2)
  15. I am currently filling in my applications for MS degree in economics. I have two undergraduate degrees, however, I am wondering whether it is acceptable not to mention at all my first degree which is entirely irrelevant to my current application. Even though I graduated with a very good GPA, I fear that it may well confuse the admissions committee regarding my commitment and research interests. Any suggestions?
