  1. Wow. It seems ridiculous to bill themselves as the "world's premier graduate program in agricultural and applied economics" and not fund visits. Maybe they just assume that everyone will want to attend for the placement record alone? I know in past years Berkeley has gotten a lot of love on this forum, but I'm having a rough time seeing it...
  2. I'm sure they will. It would be a really bad signal if they didn't offer to buy the ticket. It's possible however that they might have a set amount for student recruitment at $400 per student or something.
  3. I'll be at the Davis visit (although I heard that some faculty won't be able to make it)! Also Berkeley is definitely still admitting :)
  4. I agree. I'd lean towards Wisconsin. I think they have much better methods training, plus I've yet to see a graduate development class that's actually useful. Bulk up on methods and read the development literature/talk to faculty on your own... That said, anyone going to visit these places soon?
  5. Nothing official. Just an email with a few questions.
  6. Congratulations to all of the admits thus far! I'm also in at Purdue, Michigan State, Davis, and (probably) Wisconsin. Still waiting on Cornell & Berkeley...
  7. Asymmetrica is right. You place it in a highly ranked econ journal if you can. Otherwise I would guess the ranking is roughly: 1. AJAE 2. Agricultural Economics 3. Journal of Agricultural Economics 4. Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics
  8. Congrats! Sounds like you're in and they're just working out funding.
  9. They're working on university fellowship nominations I'm sure, not departmental. That will come later.
  10. So I see over on gradcafe UW Madison is starting to make their fellowship nominations in ARE!
  11. I applied to and visited Madison, MSU, Purdue for development a few years back. I could have happily attended any of them. I would definitely add Davis and Cornell to that list but I think that about rounds out the strongest development people in the field. I found the total funding packages were most competitive (after COLA) at MSU and Purdue. I love Purdue's program and think they're a great group of people. That said, I generally get the feeling from some professors that Purdue only offers a development specialization because they feel like they have to. MSU has a ton of development focused people in the field that have great connections. Wisconsin has a small but high quality development faculty (anyone know if they're hiring?). Davis has Carter and one of the better MA programs and Cornell has Barrett who is one of my academic heroes. Also didn't UM just pick up Bellemare from Duke? I've heard really good things about him as an advisor (especially for MA students).
  12. From the people I know, I've seen some success for pure econ PhDs outside of the top 20 - it largely depends on the school you were at, the strength of the econ department at that program, and your area of specialization. That said I've also heard of people who have gone on to Stanford and Chicago after the MA in ARE - although these are both places that have had a stronger connection to the ARE field in the past.
  13. Hi all, I thought I would go ahead and create the ARE thread for the 2014 admission cycle. This is a place to post questions, comments, concerns pertaining to agricultural, resource, and applied economics programs. Best of luck as you all submit those apps!
