  1. Thanks to everyone on this thread. I have a number of takeaways, especially the Dunning-Kruger effect.
  2. Wow! You got it all wrong. I am unmarried, below 22, and a new graduate. What I meant by rich businessman is I ran a business in school which could conveniently meet my feeding and other expenses (apart from fees). That's all. Not that I own a car. In the context of undergrad students still getting money from their parents, and I could cover my own expenses myself, that's what I meant. By "family," I meant parents and cousins. I just want to give back, that's all. It appears that most of what I'm saying are misunderstood. I am from an entirely different parr of the world and I'm interacting here to get used to the reasoning of other scholars before time. Wow! Thanks for bombardments!
  3. Please who is applying to Louisiana State University? There is a new application system. Under the old one, all my recommeders already submitted their letters and I was assured that the letters would be transferred to the new system. Now, the letters weren't transferred. Please who has a similar issue, and how do I go about it, as the office has not replied for a week now?
  4. Thanks so much, Rsaylors and everyone. Well, I have tried to conceal much information about myself because this is a public forum, but I would tell little about my background. I finished with a first class degree, top of class, first to finish with such from my large family. I just finished this year I was a business man at undergrad - a very rich one. I fed from that + I was a university scholar. Since I have always desired to become a professor + I already worked as an RA, I knew a PhD was the next thing for me. That said, since I am that academically successful, many relatives are depending on me and cannot wait to reap from their seeds in my life, I knew I could not live on stipends alone so I need to do a business by side (since I love it also). In fact, if a PhD in US isn't a fee waiver, I may not be able to afford it, as of now. So, the Nobel came in when I was reading about nobels in general and see if that could be a goal in the far future. Yes, I know I'm overambitious. The part of the world I come from, I am responsible to my extended family. Thanks again everyone for helping me have a rethink in my future.
  5. I am already applying for this cycle. Risking repeating myself, I love research and I know a PhD is research itself, as I was an RA. But my eventual goal is to be called a "professor." Now, if I'm to pick which one I prefer. Frankly, leading a class of business executives at the board is what I desire. I've been double guessing if I am killing myself by pursuing a PhD, but then i love research.
  6. So what advise do you have for some over-ambitious guy who wants to walk into an MBA class in a few years not only to teach from research, but also to "boast" to his students about how his company is succeeding with that concept he's teaching?
  7. Thanks for your pieces of advice I actually meant a position more like a sleeping director, who just makes phone calls. I'm looking at one who would only intervene if need be and offer strategic advice occasionally. But then, my homework is in progress till I begin doctoral studies. Would that work out? Or I should not think about it?
  8. Thanks, Rsaylors! I know fully well that a PhD is about research and I love research so much. I have worked as an RA and am applying for PhD programs. That said, I love business in itself and intend to be on top of a corporation while at graduate school and even when I become a professor. Is this actually possible? Plus, if I am an MBA student, I think I want to listen to a professor who is in the heat of the market competition more than one who is teaching me without experience. Then where am I heading to?
  9. I think it makes more sense to me if a business school professor is teaching me about "strategy" when he himself has applied those strategies in the corporate world. PS: Ask Porter
  10. I think a Business school 'nobel' is one who is also successful in the industry. One who has chains of successful businesses (or even listed on Forbes) and then still holds a top position as a business school professor.
  11. Can an Accounting PhD become a Nobel prize winner in Economics? Thanks.
  12. What's auto reject? Do they just cut you if you have a low test score without reading your "dominating" letters?
  13. Frankly, I'm very, very interested in another program. Please how can I put this in my SOP in a way it doesn't suggest I want anything. Thanks
  14. If a school says what other program would you like to be considered for if you cannot get an offer for your desired program? Is that a trap? I mean - if i list another program, say PhD econ adsa substutute for say, PhD policy, will it signify that i am not keen on gettjng a PhD policy and I just want to get into that school OR can it somehow help in that they will give me the other program?
