  1. Ph.D. Med.Chem., after much much much consideration, at KU!!! :D something to share about Lawrence?
  2. Good point gstergia, agree 100% :D 1. thank them for having your application accepted 2. say how sorry u feel coz you r unable to accept it (perhaps due to so-called `personal reasons`if you really want to state specific motive :D) / or simply reject it ;) 3. preserve some link for the future; e.g. that if you were given an offer once again you`d be grately honored or something along this lines 4. thank a person from the school that was esp. nice in dealing with you (e.g a secretary, graduate director, prof) 5. say what your action will be; i.e. that you`ll send them back I-20 and this letter asap (and try to be succinct) Good LUCK in the other school!!!!
  3. Hey jason, med.chem, have heard from all of them. You, Ph.D., which specialization? Good Luck, :D
  4. Fingers, sth for you! Jason, it seems to be no news so far from Pharmaceuticals. Which specific field are u appliyng to? Ph.D, Pharm.D. or Masters? Cheers :D
  5. Madeleine, truly sorry for the capitals. :D
  6. e-mail and subsequently FAX is the easiest way to confirm it. Sending hard copy via snail won`t do any harm as well. :D
  7. Great dude! Bikini and that sort of things!! :D
  8. Thanx to ritwik and gforce. @ on_dope - I`m already engaged in this firing. :) Unfortuntaley not all of them reply? Why, though? Kinda afraid of competition? Donnot understand this behavior. Funding, drop-rate, prospects after graduation - ok everywhere. That`s a problem!!! :D
  9. On_dope, awhig, Nishi and Dingus thanx! :) Any suggestions please........ Dingus, That`s exactly the reason why I still keep OleMiss on the list....... (rest 3 draw) A prof who is responsible for graduate admissions in Mississippi is really nice and extremely accommodating. And, yes he answers my questions fully, leaving no doubts. Yet, from the very moment I saw this question in Dragon`s thread, I`m not quite sure how much should the whole issue count. After all, it will be the time during our graduate studies (esp. during the 1st year) when we`ll prove our values. You can easily imagine a situation that an applicant who does not appear to be excellent, excel in his research. And, the converse. The first will become more desirable for a department, the latter will lose. Intricacies of an admission process. It`s a kind of competition, but also an art of making false pretences...... :D Besides, graduate programs can treat differently wannabes and their graduate students. Next question please. :D
  10. Admits: :D Rutgers - TA SUNY Buffalo - GA UFL - 4 year fellowship OleMiss - GA Kansas University - RA Virginia Commonwealth - sadly dep.is out of cash Michigan, Ann Arbor - 1 year fellowship Minnesota, Twin Cities - stipend Reject: Purdue - God knows why they denied my application. :hmm: Purdue was my first-choice, so will have to seek education somewhere else.... When I asked them about the reason, they wrote me: `while your application was acceptable, it was not competitive enough..` Why then, every other school took me in??? Now, as my time is pressing, I came to think that taking the proper decision is incomparably more difficult than application process in itself, gre including. Dingus, I read assiduously all your considerations regarding the choice, and narrowed my choices down to Kansas, Minneapolis, Ann Arbor, and OleMiss. All have some pros and cons. 3 first are within the 5 best pharmacy schools in the country. 1. Kansas - can find only 2 people under whom I`d like to work; one of them (in the words of a current graduate student) is `demanding`, which forecasts no good; focus on the synthesis (50% chances that I`ll go there) 2. Minneapolis - terribly cold, absolutely freezing, bone-chilling; focus equally on biochemistry and synthesis, longest tradition (20%) 3. Ann Arbor - all recent graduates easily tracked, all of them with great record; can`t find a prof. with whom I`d like to work at all :( (15%) 4. OleMiss - received the most money from NIH last year out of all pharma schools in the US, budding department, could work with 4 out of 5 profs there - overall mystery. (15%) Hey biologists what do you think about it? Dingus, can you offer some guidance? All TMians what would you suggest?
  11. Can. till april 15th without any kind of agreement from a school. After this date he/she must seek a written release from the school.
  12. Let me join the discussion for a while. Dragon, I`d say that since it`s almost certain that you won`t move to Athens, then the choice is extremely easy. :D You`re so different from other applicants sharing their concerns on TM that your priorities do not resemble theirs in any terms, that`s for sure. All the best in Emory!!! :grad: Dingus, have you thought of any other factor influencing school selection? I still have 4 open, comparable possibilities and I`m hitting the roof as deadlines re comming.
  13. That you are shortlisted for the admission! I`d say 50/50 to almost certain admit depending on particular school. Once again, good luck, mate!
  14. then you share interests with both of us, fingers and me! :D
  15. Dingus, I often wonder how do you rember all the facts associated with TM! I bow down before you!!! :D Yes, I applied (successfully!) for Medicinal Chemistry. And, you`re quite right Dingus. It deals mainly with drug discovery and design, but also branches out into prodrugs which obviously can be regarded as a form of delivery. FingerS have you applied this year? To medical schools? My program is located within pharmacy schools, so the application-admission procedure can be quite different. As of today I know 8/9 decisions. :grad: Cheers :)
  16. And let me too, quite simply though, but truly honestly. Dingus  CONGRATULATIONS!!! Now it`s your time! :grad: You`re the real man behind the scenes at TM! :D CONGRATULATIONS!!!CONGRATULATIONS!!!
  17. hey gstergia! You really do like animals, don`t you? :D
  18. hey Sherry! I`m happy that you`ve made your decision! Certainly the best one for you! :)Congratulations! Hope that still you`ll be visiting TM from time to time. All The BEst
  19. Thanks Sherry! :) Hey Dingus where ar u? Hyped_Applicant ve u been here?
  20. Agree, but certainly it is not the most desired thing during 1st year in graduate school when u have to take a lot of exams and start ur research work. Why most distiguished programs clearly state that u do not need to TA while u r a freshman ;)? Because tops have bags of money, and thus do not need to force int.students into TA when they struggle with English, at least initially. Naturally, later on in one`s career in graduate school a semester of TA can do more good than harm, boosting confidence levels, language communication and presentation skills.:D Besides, these qualities are not easily measurable & one could have acquired them prior to entering graduate school. ;)
  21. As I`m nervously trying to choose the most appropriate uni, I stumbled across this wierdo; At buffalo incoming students are required to take 4 placement examinations (4 areas of chemistry), while at every other uni they have to pass only organic chemistry exam. There is absolutely no sense in checking all this chemical knowledge bearing in mind that students on my program barely need it. What they use is based on organic chem.! What do you think about this? Eliminate this nit-picking SUNY? :hmm:
  22. First of, CONGRATULATIONS!!!! :D RA 1. research u conduct willl form the basis for ur thesis 2. u dont have to take SPEAK and prepare for ur lessons; both in laguage and factualy 3. with RA u will work for yourself, your future and briliant career, and TA gives you nothing. 4. it is often the case that departments that require incoming graduate students to serve as TA do this coz they r short of money for research However, one semester of TA is also advisable as it allows ppl to handle different kind of situation. Later it helps during seminars and lectures. Cheers! :)
  23. When was the deadline for US applicants in CS? In my it is said that their applications must be POST-marked on or before March 15. Any idea when can I expect their decision?
  24. How long can this holiday last? One week, two, perhaps one month? Longer?
  25. Thanks Ronnie, gstergia, Dr., & ritwik. Ronnie, so you`d go for a guy who has both time and potential, not looking at his age! :D Tell me only how to identify this qualities? gstergia - you`re always joking man! :) Dr., his papers are ok. I read all of them. The trick is that he is changing his major area of science a bit. i.e. from organic to medicinal. So, I know that it must take some time for him to establish in new environment, and have papers in journals typical to this new field. More to the point, I dont want to deal mainly with organic ch., and will speak to him about my prospective role in his team, but with him being so short in this uni, the opinion of students cannot go unbiased. And he has no graduates so far. Ritwik, once again I totally agree with you! :D How to avoid such a trap? Exclude without a 2nd thought profs who are not transparent? (i.e. with surprisingly little pubs, or those whose students do not appear v. often in pubs)
