  9. An update: the other letter writer (big name) said RA work wouldn't add much to my profile and just make people second guess why I couldn't get in directly. I guess maybe research experience is not that important when aiming for these schools/field and coming from Europe? Any more advice would be interesting.
  10. Thank you, I appreciate you taking the time to write this The reason the prof told me to not do RA is that he believes very few theorists would take RAs in the first place and secondly the day to day work would not be very enriching for somebody like me who doesn't love data, clearly working with a top prof is always great but he thinks it would be easier once in a PhD since first year courses would not be too daunting... I will obviously ask my new profs here what they think about this. So you think it is not even worth trying to apply this year?
  11. Another question: some universities require a writing sample, I haven't really written anything in economics but I have a 15 pages Maths document on something (very technical) do you think it would be appropriate to upload that?
  12. Hi all, I'm just joining now but have been reading for almost 2 years, my plan is to apply for a phd in economics for this admission cycle. I have a few concerns which I am going to highlight in the profile, would be great to hear your views on those. Thanks! PROFILE: Type of Undergrad: Top 5 European, Mathematics Undergrad GPA: 85% avg, ranked 1st/160 for math Type of Grad: Top 3 European Economics/Finance Msc Grad GPA: in progress GRE: 4.5/163V/170Q (non native) Math Courses: Multivariable Calculus, Linear Algebra, Real Analysis, Abstract Algebra, Probability Theory, Measure theory, Martingale Theory, Brownian motion theory, Dynamical Systems, Functional Analysis, Sobolev spaces and PDEs, Graph theory, Stats (casella berger based), Financial Mathematics (all top grades apart from graph theory) Econ Courses (grad-level): Advanced Micro (MWG) Phd Financial Metrics (first part based on hayashi), Asset Pricing, Financial Economics (all in progress) Econ Courses (undergrad-level): Introductory Micro A (at top 30 US school in the summer while in high school, not sure whether to mention this?) Other Courses: NA Letters of Recommendation: One maths from ugrad who knows me very well (worked 12 weeks with them) and is willing to make sure he knows what kind of letter is needed for Econ Phd, a famous ex prof who doesn't know me very well but likes me and has a lot of contacts, I need to get the third one from one of my MSc Profs (probably going to try with someone good but young) Research Experience: 12 weeks doing the summer working on regularity theory for PDE Teaching experience: None Research Interests: Microeconomic theory and theoretical asset pricing SOP: not 100% sure about this (any tip would be great!) Other: some internships in investment banks Applying to: MIT, Harvard (Econ and Bus Ec), Stanford (Econ and GSB), Chicago, Princeton (I am applying to so few because my original plan was to apply next year, while maybe doing some RA experience, one of my letter writers thinks it would be a waste of time for me and that I should give it a shot this year) Concerns: no econ research experience, bad AW gre, a lot of analysis but not much else in math, still missing a ref letter
